... is a distinctly crappy factor in my life at the minute.

My student loan has eventually come in today, but it is more then £100 short of the amount required to pay my landlady. Great.

The additional income assessed loan which I know I am more than enough entitled has not been granted me, for the third year in a row. I am not from a rich family, far from it.

I have to apply for a financial contingency fund from the uni which will take a good month or so to process, of course it will be too late by then. I couldn't have applied for it before then because I needed my loan in before I can fill the form in.

I gave up my job down here (I worked through first and second year) in May, as I knew I would need the time for studying, am beginning to wish I hadn't.

What is even more infuriating is that the Student Loans company give the loan in 3 lumps, the last dollop for the last term is bigger than the first 2, despite the term being just one month then!!! Where on earth is the sense in that!

It just pi$$es me off beyond belief. :( I have had to borrow a small amount of money from a couple of good mates (something I rarely do because I absolutely HATE doing it), thinking I could pay them off as soon as my loan came in, now I'm worried I won't be able to.

My landlady has just been round this evening and after negotiating living expenses and such we have come to a much more evenly split payment schedule. Phew, that's taken a right load off.

I am sorry to have ranted and raved at you .org, I just needed to type it out my system. I'm not often down but am a bit fed up with it all.

Thankyou for reading if you even got this far, bit of a pointless thread really. You may continue with your hopefully much more enlightening evening than mine will be :)

Good luck with it all MissYC, you should get MrYC working harder on servicing bikes to pay your rent.... ;)

I can't really comment anymore, I have never been in your situation.

Hang in there, one day it'll all seem worthwhile, even though it does seem that at the moment there's a conspiracy to prevent anyone but the wealthy getting a good education. We managed to get Pam, our SV girl through it. We're just getting uni offers for number two daughter at the moment, then in two years it's the last one. I reckon I'll be retiring in about 30yrs, but we're doing our best to help them through it without getting into debt. Hope it all comes together for you, keep smiling.

That's an idea ;) However, he does lots for me already and I would hate to ask him for owt. Good to know I have backup though :D

I think I should be ok for money now, thanks to my surprisingly understanding landlady, in her words "I am a mother and therefore understand your situation" - who'd have thought it, she's not got a heart of stone after all :-D.... so all is much better in my world.

YC is a lucky boy his mum still allows him to stay at home. I don't know how you manage down there on your own.
How does it work with uni fees these days MissYC? Do they give you grants or owt?
One of the reasons Im Indoors had to work nights on a weekend was to pay for his fees and to be able to study all week. Go to uni Friday morn, work Fri night, Sat, Sun night, go straight from work to uni, and do a full day there...that was in his first two years. He wasn't entitled to get a penny towards them as it was classed as part time, even though the amount of modules each year pointed at full time. I still have no idea how the hell he learnt anything in those first two yrs..the state of him on a monday tea time was almost unbearable at times. He still had his rent to pay, and live off what ever was left each month as well as pay off his fees.

definitely nothing "woo" about being skint :p

Am studying for a BSc in Zoology.

Dizz: I currently get a loan of about £6300 to cover maintenance and tuition fees. This gets paid in 3 instalments - one for each term - i don't see the tuition fees, they go straight to the uni. My first loan instalment this term which I have only just got is £1059, my rent being £1152 for 18 weeks. I don't think it takes a genius to work out this doesn't add up terribly well. Hence why I've had to negotiate living expenses with my landlady who has said i can pay rent more equally over the academic year. I.e usually I would pay rent for 18weeks, then 15 then 7 weeks, but now she is letting me pay 14 weeks, then 15 then 11. Much easier on me.

In addition to that £1059 the student loans people have given me i should have got a bit extra from the income assessed people, but they have failed to give me it, no explanation why because I applied for it and filled the forms in, as did me ma.

Eeeee well.

I also get £6300 a year, although it's my final year this year so it's slightly less. Seriously, you need to be on the phone to them every day to get the rest of what you're owed. What does it say on the website? It sounds like you only got the loan bit and not the grant bit through. You should also be getting a uni bursary. I work 20 hours a week, that pays my rent, bills and petrol for the month, everything else on top (student loan) tends to get spent. You should be laughing right now with an extra grand in your pocket; seriously, try and sort it.

If it's a grant as well that they're not giving you, they should bloody well get a move on with it as you don't have to pay it back! Also, if they're not giving you the income assessed one you should be on about £4.5k for the max loan anyways - if you requested the maximum which I imagine you did on the form. Therefore, you'd either be getting £1900-£2000 or £1400- you have neither of those amounts. Therefore: they are wrong, and you should phone them and sort it ASAP.

Sorry to hear your money woes MissYC, I understand how frusturating and worrying it must be for you. Its great to hear that you came to an alternative arrangement with your landlady - huge weight off your shoulders..! :D

However it is a bit "hmm" tha you didnt get the grant, id deffo give them a call and have a word. No harm in finding out why is there? There was an article in the newspaper which said that the governmenthad grossly miscalculated their figures which meant that there is a £200 million shortfall in funding. This equals to less money per student. Not sure if this affects you, but see here (http://www.financialadvice.co.uk/news/3/householdbills/8373/UK-government-miscalculate-student-funding-for-next-year.html)

And dont do any lampost dancing for the pervy .orgers :p ;)

Spending student loan on accommodation, what's that all about?

I had to pay for my daughters accommodation, £3,600/£3,900/£4,200 in a single cheque each year in advance. Ouch.

Yeah she took out a student loan, then a professional studies loan for her masters, and lived at home/commuted for that.

Worse was for her BVC, she agreed £300/month for her digs. When she gave notice her landlady said she had to pay up for a full year. Not written into her contract. Just a notice period. She walked and we got nasty letters demanding payment to complete the year. Sod that, If you give a contract to a law student of course they are going to read it and use a badly written one against you. Phew saved me over a grand there.

eeek.

I've paid for my accommadation out of my student loan throughout my course at uni, but I had a job first and second year which got me through. If you think about paying bills on top of that, tis a wonder I can actually feed myself at all really. Hence why I'm applying for this contingency fund.

I don't get owt from my folks, we're not a rich family as I've mentioned so I'm getting through by the skin of my teeth lol! A number of students have their folks pay their rent for them which obviously frees up tons of cash for 'em and good for them, for the rest of us life ain't so easy. Also the Welsh folk here have their fees paid for them by the Welsh government - correct me if I'm wrong on that - which also makes life easier. This is fair enough mind, perks of studying in your home country, I'd like to know why English students don't get the same treatment by their country though.
