View Full Version : Police biker?

So there I was filtering home the other evening when I came upto a Police Biker. At least I think it was a Police biker. It was a 'Y' reg BMW of some kind (they all look the same to me) and had Police livery, a met Police high viz jacket and a helmet with a Nurburgring sticker on. The bike had all the lights and aerials so looked genuine but why ride an older Police bike? Also when we began moving it became quickly apparent that the standard of his riding was quite poor, he struggled to get through gaps wider than the Suez canal. He also did the paddling thing where both legs are down paddling while he filtered. He also filtered on zig-zags and went down a cycle path. He was also wearing some very old style boots. Just looked very....odd.

Sounds like another 62 yr old with too much time on his hands to me as well. I've never seen a police rider that cannot handle his bike.

Could have been new to the bike squad I guess... Everyones gotta learn, hence the older bike, but all the gear.... or just having a bad day.

He might be a regular copper who has just bought an old police bike - I guess they might get first dibbs on them when they sell them off??? It would be illegal for him to be in full police gear otherwise. i have seen white PAn Euros in full police liovery but without lights, as its not illegal to copy the colour scheeme so long as it doesnt say police on. I saw one guy with "POLITE" on the back, cheaky sod!

It is illegal to use the 'battenburg' scheme on a non approved vehicle, VOSA, those motorway helper dudes and the tax checking bar stewards use it too. You can get round it by making the squares slightly different colours I heard but you'd have to be a weirdo to bother wouldn't you. He might have been a blood runner volunteer, they tend to hi viz bling their bikes a lot.

I have a good idea who he is. belongs to my IAM group,
he is harmless, he just likes the look of being one.

he is a good chap, as he does the blood runner thing etc.

Doesn't say much for your IAM group! ;)

Tbh, its a tall bike and he is quite short!

IAM- is not as difficult to get as you may think, its more about road position and speed limits than absolute confidence.

Well if it's him I'm very surprised Dan mistook him for police. His bike (Pan Euro) & clothing does not say Police anywhere on it.

& I thought with him, it was just a visibility thing rather than an impersonation thing?

The bike had all the lights .
Do you mean 2 rear red fog lights (slightly high?)

Didn't he say it was a BMW?

not always true i've found. when we did our bike safe day the coppers therer were saying they had a couple of bikes older than that in their fleet (one of them being there on the day). it all depends how much money the force has i think.

this bloke however doesn't sound like a police standard rider, i don't any of them are bad enough to have off days like that.

To be honest, despite looking like a flourescent day-glo lollypop lady on a bright red (ok, muddy salt encrusted rust coloured) bike with headlights on, apparently I'm still completely feckin invisible.

If I could get hold a white Pan, a white lid and some flashy lights and siren - well, it's the only thing I haven't tried yet.

I've got a matt black bike, black jacket, black lid, cammo pants. I'm fairly sure car drivers would still be retarded if I was dressed like a tw4t too lol :-P

This bike had Met Police written on it and had the blue light at the back and blue strobes at the front. He was also wearing a met police high viz jacket and his helmet said Met police on it as well as having a nurburgrign sticker. I spent a few minutes sat behind him in traffic before so had a good look. I guess it might not have been a BMW but it was a flat twin so chances are it is. It just looked totally out of place as it was an older bike ridden by someone who seemed very nervous/inexperienced.

In contrast coming back from Supervoxes BBQ a couple of years back I saw a gold ZX10R being ridden by a Met Police officer. I was doing 90 and he went past me doing.....well... alot more than that.

You should have pulled him over and suggested he got some extra training from IAM or other

Obviously not who Ian was thinking about.

See this thread. http://www.visordown.com/forum/forummessages.asp?UTN=385590&URN=4&dt=4&srchdte=0&cp=1&v=2&sp= Personally i think he should be spoken to about impersonating the old bill :-)

Very unlikely that the Police would be using a 'Y' reg.

I've never seen a police rider that cannot handle his bike.
Really? I've seen a few that have believed their own hype - but can't live up to it on the bike.

While there are numerous screw ups to laugh at, this must be the most famous of recent years:

PC49 Claimed inadequate signing was to blame, hmmmm, yeah, right.

The oldest bikes we have are 2 BMW 850s even there on 53 plates.

Dan - Was this anywhere near Hendon?

I work very close to Isleworth. I've never seen him, but I'll keep a look out.

The chap I know has a BMW R850, ex police bike, doesn't have 'jam sandwich' or any lights, but has got high vis all over the bike.
He lives near guildford and have seen him a few times about. I assumed you has seen him in guildford too!

To be fair, I've been working in Brentford for 2 years and that was the 1st time I've ever seen him. Not seen the guy in Guildford as I don't live in Guildford and very rarely go there to be honest.

Maybe not quite that old but L&B (and believe Fife, they hide theirs 99% of the time) still have old Pans on the road

:smt120 I haven't seen him since a ROGS run in august. so it is quite likely J. has changed bikes!
and lets be honest, we only have 1 police wannabe!

Must get myself down to one of the sunday runs.
