Wheel Bearing Inner Race Removal:

I have been having fun removing a set of rear wheel bearings. I have now ended up with an outer race left in the wheel, which is awkward to hammer out. What are my options to remove this?

Get something with a flat edge that will fit through the opposite side and gentle tap it out, bit like this but imagine is the wheel bearing ...

There is hardly anything to hammer against and it is really tight?

Yeah if you get a drift like that (piece of steel bar), and hammer the end of it to give it a "lip" it'll make it slightly easier.

Put the inner race and balls back in, make some wooden wedges and space the balls out equally - tap bearing out as normal.

Inner race is in 2 pieces! Going to get some heat onto wheel and see if it will tap out.

Wont matter, you only need to tap the very edge gently, one tap, move drift, tap, move drift, tap etc etc. Mind you this assumes you haven't busted out the inner bit of the bearing and balls, if you have then you may be looking at getting bearing removal tools and hope

Outer race is now removed:) Heated wheel bearing housing with a blowtorch and prised the outer race out with a tyre lever that had a curved end that just gripped a lip on the bearing. Had to keep reheating the housing and it eventually came out was very tight. It looked like somebody else in the past had had a go at trying to hammer it out! The wheel had 2 bearings on the drive side which did not help as it was well into the housing.

You shouldn't really need anything like that, the bearings only go in/out one way, all you need to remove them is a rod that will fit into the axle hole (obviously smaller diametre) placed at an angle so it touches the inner bit of the bearing and gentle taps all round after that :) But if you really think you need something then look here (http://www.uktools.com/product_info.php?products_id=14812)

These bearings where really tight. I would have been better useing the blowtorch in the first place rather than a heat gun.

As they should be cause the outer bit isn't supposed to move but the tap from other side does work, surprised me when I saw it done the first time and then tried it myself, now loads more happy about having to replace bearings and other such stuff like head races :)
