View Full Version : Plastic bits in oil sump?
Hi all service my bike today, it's an sv 650s k3 model, when i drained the oil i found little pieces of white plastic bits in the bottom looked they had come out of the sump with the oil any ideas what this might be???
Tried getting a pic up of them but failed.
Water pump drive gear possibly.
If it is the water pump how would i know because it's still riding the same found them last time i changed the oil in April bought the bike in March, was thinking the filler cap could of snapped or something as it's got an after market one on it.What do you think?
When was the last time you saw a white plastic oil filler cap on an SV?
Good point they wasn't pure white though, thought the oil might of discoloured whatever it is.Too be honest was just trying to reassure myself that it's nothing serious.
It's probably not too serious, but you do need to get it checked out. My first point of inspection would be the water pump drive gear, as they are usually white plastic on most bikes. Having never had an SV engine apart I couldn't tell you if it's an easy job or a complete engine strip down. On most bikes it just means removing one side casing leaving the main engine intact - I've no idea if this is true of the SV.

I think the SV water pump drives are all orange. Trying to think what in the engine is white-ish but coming up with nothing so far...

No I can't think of any either. Camchain guides are black, water pump gear is orange, any insulator bits on the alternator are black...
Unless odd motors have different coloured bits in?

Nothing white in the engine mate, are you sure it came out of the sump?

Just had a similar problem but it was flywheel teeth that came out of mine. There is nothing white in there though. Email me the pics and i'll post them for you, paul.toland@cardinalhealth.com
it is common to find little pieces like plastic.
they come from flywheel magnets.it is epoxy used to glue magnets to flywheel.
Thanks for all the help did come from sump as they were all in the bottom of my bowl.

They look like similar colour to waterpump drive gear. Personally I'd have a look at it, but they could also be bits of generator glue.

The pics are not very clear but they are the same colour as the waterpump gear...
take better pic.
it is either epoxy from magnets or if gear it can be water pump or oil pump gear.
there are no other plastic parts inside motor.

Looks similar to the bits I found in the 650, came from the pump as shown in zadar's picture on the left.
Thanks everyone for the help, is it a bad thing does it need doing asap? What will happen if it totally goes?
if it is gear you don't want to ride until fixed.you can blow up motor.
Ok thanks mate i'll check it out as soon as i can,i did find them at the last service in March April.
Thanks to everyone who offered me advice and input it's been diagnosed as the
oil pump drive gear as it's behind the clutch decided to leave it alone and let the dealer do it.
Thanks again.:p
