Just wondering if anyone knows what type of material / grade that spindles for bike are typically made of?

I've been giving much thought to the gixxer front end conversion and like the sound of the bling USD forks and radial callipers, but i'd want to retain standard sv spindle diameter so I can use the dyamgs I already have plus the standard speedo mount. Using a few educated guesses I've designed up a spindle arrangement to fit the gixxer forks and reckon after a bit of research that BS970 817M40 (EN24) would be a suitable material for the spindle, hardened and tempered. I'll be designing the top / btm clamps in due course. Then when I've saved the pennies will be starting to acquire donor gixxer parts and confirm the details for the bits i've designed before they're made. Plus sorting discs with the correct offset to match the callipers.

I know this is a long, complicated and more costly approach to doing a front end but it's fun designing the parts myself and i find it really interesting sorting all the details out.

plan is:
spindle design
top clamp, bottom clamp & stem design
acquire gixxer forks, radial callipers & front mudguard
confirm designs
confirm brake disc offset
buy bits and assemble

It'd be easier to fit some different bearings and use SRAD spindle if it'd fit.

Not a bad idea YC, but the bearings in fron wheel of the sv are 6203 2RS single row deep groove ball bearings, and If I remember right are 17 ID x 40 OD x 12 THK. There's no crossover in OD x thickness when you compare larger bores to the sv std 17mm bore in the standard range offered by SKF. So wheels would have to be bored to suit new larger bearing OD. Then i'd have to have all the spacers for my std wheels and dymags re-made to suit the new spindle diameter, and check to see if the speedo drive could be bored out as well.

Ah ok. Measure disc seperation and bolt circle diameter for us and I'll check on my SRAD bits if you wish.

It is possible to fit a SV front wheel into a GSXR front end, to be honest it is a waste of time and effort. You will have to mill up your own spindle and brake disc spacers.

A GSXR wheel is lighter than an SV one.

Have you also tried sourcing a GSXR dymag.

It will also work out cheaper in the event of a big off to use the full GSXR front end.

Yep, you're maybe right there dave. But i'm expecting to have to get a spindle custom made and find a disc with correct offset or spacer to suit. It's not so much a question of what's the easiest route tho, but the one I want to have a go at. Already got SV std wheels and dymags. And if the worst does happen and I stack it big time, i'm going to have to replace a load of bits anyway. Or start again with something else.
