View Full Version : Help me choose between an 06 and an 08

I may have the opportunity to get a new SV650S my old curvy was demolished by some idiot doing something stupid and caused an accident so I have a little cash...
Anyway... given almost the same price which bike is the better choice of the following
an 08 with abs but around 6500km a slipon pipe and a few cosmetic mods (such as flushmounts and a tail eliminator) I don't care for the full lowers but I guess I could take those off, this one has 8 months or so left on warranty. I don't like the color as much as some others but I can get used to it
a 2006 with only 2500km, the color I want, but a stock pipe, it has nicer cosmetic mods (tail eliminator is much nicer and has a nice windscreen change too but they have all the stock parts and stands too), possibly babied a bit more during break-in and far and it has over 1 year left on warranty (not sure how that worked) no ABS but I've never ridden one with ABS anyway
How reliable is the ABS on these bikes?
I understand there are some tweaks to the later 07/08 bikes over the earlier 2nd gen SV650s.... and I've heard there may be some compatibility issues when looking for spare parts as some things apparently dont fit the 08 that did fit the 04-07 bikes.
Are there any higher maintenence costs on the 08 bikes vs the slightly older SV? I've heard some say the 08 got better mileage but had less horsepower on the dyno (I thought they were the same given the same rider and riding style)
if the 08 sounds good but say the person ran the bike harder than specified in the owners manual for break-in do you think this could be a problem in the future given neither have very many miles on them...
I don't know much about the 08 bikes yet and I thought they were the same as the 04-07 but some people say they are different
Maybe I should save about $1000 and get another 1999 yellow SV650S that has only 5000km on it too... I still have a few spare parts from my old 99 :)
they are different, mostly engine and electrics.
personally I would get 06.
Is there a price difference and any service history? And how long do you intend to keep it for?
The 06 sounds better to me from what you've said above (2.5k is nothing, bearly broken in), however the resale value won't be as high.... I guess its been sat around a bit, but if it has a yrs warranty you won't have any problems. If the 06 is cheaper up front, it'll give you some cash to make any more mod's you want.

The warranty on the 2006 is probably still there because it was pre-registered to the dealer and only 'bought' less than a year ago. In that respect, it has probably been less exposed to the elements than the 2008. Given you prefer the colour of it and aren't fussed about the fairing lowers, I'd say you should go for the 2006.
2008 lump has twin spark plugs, but I can't recall if the 2006 dos. If the 2006 doesn't it will be marginally cheaper to service although there really isn't much in it.

i would go for the 2006 as there less miles on and the
07/08 have had electrical changes and exhaust restrictions

Deep down it is the same bike, go for the better deal.
It's down to how much you want ABS. Personally I would jump at the chance if the bikes were the same price. It's also going to help the resale value enormously being 2 yrs newer & with added OEM features (ABS)
Incidentally, what are the 2 colours?
The only problems I have heard about mods for '08s are dealing with the lambda sensor when you change exhaust so if that has already been done & it runs well then no worries on that score compared with still having to change the can on the 06. The better screen on the 06 can only be worth €50?
The only extra maintenance of the 08 would be 4 spark plugs instead of 2 (plus the fact that a service is now due at 6500kms).
A lot of people argue that it's good to run in an engine quite harshly so it's not certain that any damage has been done to either bike. But why do you suspect it was more harsh on the 08? is there signs of abuse?
Buy the 08 :D
Oh: just remembered - servicing should b done every year as well as on mileage so if the 06 has only one yrs warranty left then it is due a service now too!
Maybe I should save about $1000 and get another 1999 yellow SV650S that has only 5000km on it too... I still have a few spare parts from my old 99 :)

I test drove the 2008 today... it had abs, a yosh slip on and ABS...
Now I have to say it felt like it had no balls... and with the stock rear tire it felt like the bike was going to stand up mid corner...
my 99 handled really well with the conti road attacks.. as well as some nearly bald crappy bridgestones.. it's 0-60 time felt much quicker than the new one... and I could totally feel the torque on the 99...
Is it unusual for a gen2 SV650s to feel big and bloated and underpowered compared to the earlier gen-1 sv650s?
I'm going to have to try those 2006 and 2005s I saw.... but I am starting to think I might now go back to the copy of my old bike... a 1999 yellow sv650s if it feels good...
Do they restrict bikes in your country? :???:

Do they restrict bikes in your country? :???:
Nope... not in Canada... at least not here anyway..and it felt faster than 35hp or whatever the restricted biked have... but I think those are only european Suzukis that have that don't they...
I know california has emissions issues.. but that doesn't gut the bike that much...
NO, the pointies shouldn't feel like that. I wouldn't want a squared rear tyre to put you off, So you got a proper good go of it? & could they explain it's power short fall? I'm at a loss. :???:

The squared tire was on my old SV with the 15f/44r sprockets when I first got it.. and it handled waaay better than this one and it was fast.. which is why I was hooked on it..... and then when I got my conti road attacks front and back with the 15f/46r it was great fun
as far as questions for them...not really, they didn't seem to be too technical as far as bikes go...and I didn't really ask them much about that part... the guy had a small gsx and she had the sv and came from a scooter.. so this would seem fast to her.. they thought it handled well... but here is a question... if you did some high speed rides and/or stoplight races on a bike when it wasn't broken in yet.. would that reduce it's power by a pretty noticeable margin?
the handling may just have been off because they had a stock tire.. not too bad a condition but they had a bridgestone up front... so I could probably tweak it to handle better... but it felt like I had to force it to handle the road.. my 99 dived like mad when I braked... but other than that it just needed a little encouragement to take tight corners...
I have my eye now on a 06 with only 2900km or so... I hope this one is better... plus the 06 black is dead sexy :D and it doesn't have the lower fairing and it has only a slightly modified stock pipe... so I can get the chin spoiler and then a full system for it.. that is if this black one does it for me.. I am thinking another Hindle exhaust.... my last one was great sounding
an 06 red one is for sale too.. it looks not bad but it was probably beat on.. the guy had all the boy racer mods and a 14f sprocket with the 520 conversion... not sure the rear size but I think it was 45 or 45r... and a shorty scorpion pipe....
Well you don't seem to be too hung up on getting ABS so I guess there is no point going for this 08 if you have doubts from the start.
Can't believe they let on that they were racing it before it was run in  not sure how much if any it would harm it (& i thought if anything it should improve performance at the cost of longevity).
Good luck with the continued search

Naah ABS is nice to have but I've never had it before so I won't miss it, it felt pretty much the same, but I never tried braking on gravel or anything...
They didn't say they were racing it, but they admited to going to places people do this on the streets and how they were on the last vehicle... and the fact they said they got it up to 180kph a number of times...
The engine sounded fine but it was just weak.. perhaps it was retarding the ignition or something.. it's hard to say with all the sensors on the new ones.. but I don't think I want to risk it plus the wiring they did for the tail eliminator and some other flasher lighting seemed to me to be not the best.. it'd do but more of a DIY thing not very professionaly done... They had a yosh rs3 I believe... but it was just the slip on.. it was better than stock.. but not a whole lot... it isn't deep or loud enough for me.... I wonder if it is possible to screw something up when putting on a pipe? I mean it shouldn't make a difference with the Fuel injected bikes when it is only a slip on...
I think it was the combo of things and since the bike didn't feel up to par I think it would be good to avoid it... I expect ane new ones to perform at least as well as my 99 did..
I'm actually looking at a 2006 kind of like your friend's below.. but it doesn't have a chin spoiler yet and no pipe... if I get that one all I need is the chin and the full hindle exhaust and a fuel map with air intake and I'll be set

funny i have a k8 but with an mivv exhaust and it goes like a rocket... pulls from standstill all the way to the limiter in every gear..
i'v ridden a k6 with a scorpion exhaust and it wasn't as good...

Yeap, dump all that restrictive crap in the exhaust and let the engine breath like it should!
i kept the lambda sensor in the exhaust.... i also avarage 150-170 ish miles to a tank of fuel

I didn't think there were any restrictions on the Canadian 08 bikes, I test drove one with a yosh slipon.. think it was an rs-3 but that bike had no mid range punch like my old 99SV had... I didn't feel the same kind of acceleration that's for sure.... do you know of any HP and Torque dyno charts on stock bikes? for 08+ I've always seen them up to 06 mayve 07 but I don't recall if I saw any 07 dynos...
It'd be interesting to see if the bike I looked at was crap or if the latest bikes are all that way

Well it is confirmed.... that 2008 I test drove was a pig.... they fuggerd it up somehow... it was anemic for sure
I test drove (and purchased) a 2006 SV650s in the Dark Metalic Charcoal/Black color... it felt like a SV650 should feel and it doesn't even have an exhaust mod and it is still on stock tires... plus the fact that it has only 2960km on the clock is pretty good too... at least it had the the feel of the acceleration forces on my arms
It accelerated cleanly... as it should... it'll be even better when I change the sprockets to the 15f/46r or 47r like I had on my old one...
It also handled good... maybe not as good as my 99SV but then I had newish conti road attacks on them.. so the bike cornered a bit better... but this one was not standing up on me mid corner... it was how it should be for a stock bike...
Plus it comes with a targa tail tidy which the cops won't get p!$$y about and the clear alternatives tail light/signal light (it still has the targa cat eyes on the plates for legalities too as the signals have to be a foot apart or something like that...
and the guy had a tank bra on it too plus he still had all the stock parts as well as some stands so he included them in the sale..
so now once I get it in my garage, I'll be set to play a little over the winter...
First the moto sliders... then the R6 throttle... possibly the windscreen maybe the 15f/46r sprockets when it needs it... full exhaust system and eventually the chin spoiler....
wheeeeeeeee!!!

Yeah... I think I'll have it for quite a while... and when I get the 15f/46r or 47r sprockets on... I think it will add some more excitement... but I'll hold off on that for a while... the exhaust has to come first
this 06 had very little wear on the tires 2900km to be exact.. so I got to see how the stock ones felt newish.... and they are ok... certainly not as nice as the road attacks.. but miles better than the 08 I tried...
I think partially the problem with the 08 standing mid corner is the mismatch tires... but I am also thinking they did something with the suspension... possibly moved the forks or something... I dunno.. it was weird.. I've ridden bikes that like to stand up a little... as the stock tire does to some extent as it is a sport touring tire.... but this was bad... I could see running off the road if I pushed a corner too hard...
maybe the abs did something weird... I can't figure it out... but.. who cares... I got the right one.... but it's going to kill me until I ride some other 08 just to compare :p... maybe I'll do that in the spring
I've put over 30,000 miles on my SV and love conti road attacks like you but when a cheap set of stock D220s came up I was happy to put them on my bike. I probably don't have as much confidence in them, but they are absolutely fine. They do spin up when not warmed up
It would be good to hear once you get a chance to ride another 08. I'd like to think (& I doubt very much) that Suzuki have ruined it. An individual owner on the other hand could quite likely have :)

Was the 07 exhaust restricted as much as the 08?

not sure hob..think it was from 07 on may be wrong but def 08 is :(
Was really looking for:

yes hob 100% buy a after market can.. no seriously jus looked in haynes and says 07 on had a engine management revamp inc oxy sensor .may not be exactly those words but yeah sounds like 07 is same so go get that can

:D
haha... I'd say... if that is actually the case... and it wasn't user damage to the bike... it literally felt like the bike was a little heavier yet down on power by 10-20hp over my old 99
The weird part is the canadian bikes don't have to meet the same emissions standards as the USA ones... so I'm still guessing this was user damage by the last owner in some way... maybe the abs was slightly dragging or something... I dunno...
