Hello,

It's been a while....

I keep having this issue. 2nd gear keeps popping out into neutral. This mainly happens if i give it some. But sometimes during normal riding.

I think this happened to me a couple of time on my old SV. But this one is a 2006 with 4k miles.

Any ideas?

Thanks

G

lube/grease all revelant moving parts in the gear change mechanism on the left footpeg.

As in the linkage?

This is already well lubed and moves freely.

I hope not mate but worse case scenario is selector forks bent/work or even the dogs on the gear pinions could be worn.

I speak from experience : (

is that possible after 4000 miles?

mine will do it if you accelerate hard in first and then second, it'll also do it if you're a bit soft with the shift, 1st --> 2nd seems to require a solid shove to ket it 100% engaged

The SV engine is know for a slippy second gear, sometimes you need to really ensure that you fully select the gear. I have a habit of hold my toe to the selector to ensure I get the selection, so don't panic just yet.
The other thing it could be is that your worm drive or clutch cable need a clean and a lube so when you select the gear its is in fact not selecting correctly..
If you've been riding in this bad weather then dirt can seriously effect a clean operation, if you have a hunt about the are a few threads with photos and details of what you need to do.

I would hope not mate. Like I said, worst case scenario.

But would listen to others first, I have never had an SV (que questions about why I'm on here then.. I have SV envy....)

K3 pointy here...

I get this aswell - only when im nailing it.

It just pops out of second, even when its been shifted without the clutch, but its been minced into engagement. If its not put into gear a little more forcfully you run the risk of the revs shooting up and freaking you out.

So does it simply pop out of gear or does it jump then go back into gear. The problem I had where it was the dogs and /or the selector forks was that I could gun it and it would skip out of then back into gear almost like you'd dipped the clutch a bit.

I stress that was not on an SV and I personally have no experience with this aparantly known issue with the SV. My bike was the yamaha Thundercat

My old yamaha maxim did that too... it was bent selector fork or something like that... the slight wear to the 2nd geat lead to a few missed gears and/or misadjusted clutch etc with the previous owner.. then when I got it, I rode it hard, missed a few shifts too and it got a little worse and eventually other gears started to go as well

it was suggested that they undercut the 2nd gear when they reassemble the transmission... but that was on an old yamaha.. the old FJ1100 had the same problem and I think some early ninjas did too..

if you get it in gear and know it is in solid and then accelerate hard.. and it doesn't pop out.. it probably is the selector mechanism...

if it pops out all the time you might need the transmission rebuilt..

but with a new bike... well it may be a combo of misadjusted clutch and possibly slightly bent forks

I have a Sv650s K6, and when i first bought mines it did the same as well...i couldn't figure out why, also my rpm would jump when i excel, soon later i needed a new clutch, took it to the shop and they said i was slipping the clutch too much which can cause that....
