philips xtreme power or osram nightbreakers are a popular replacement iirc & there should be loads of info in here if you try a search + you should find info on best places on the web to get a good deal
to be honest i find these fine.
That's cause you haven't tried the better ones. Unless your's has already been upgraded? Not sure if Philips is OEM but H4 definetely is.
Just to be clear, H4 refers to the physical style of the lamp, the way it fits and the type of beam it gives etc. Other types you'll come across will be H1, H7 etc.
Bottom line is you need the same style of lamp, otherwise it won't fit or work properly.
Once you've confirmed the style, H4, you then have the choice of make and model.
As others have said, in the conventional type lamp range, Osram Nightbreakers and Phillips Xtreme Power seem to be more or less state of the art in light output. You can usually find them at reasonable prices from our old friend/enemy the auction site, or various on-line suppliers like these (http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk/) for example.
honestly theyre not that bad i'm really not into these blue things either i think when you see one coming the other way there almost offensively bright.

The osrams and similar aren't the stupid chavtastic blue ones. They're not HID either.
Basically you get what you pay for, osram spend more time developing their bulbs, and spend more on the production. So the decent quality bulbs throw more light, produce slightly less heat for the same power input. The pattern isn't affected so blinding isn't an issue.

Pop a hid kit on it. My bmw has a 10k kit on it- a joy to ride an nigt- as well as a pair of auxillary lights ;)

What's point of 10k? Pointlessly blue, the 4.2 - 6k ones give a much better light. Mine's 6k but in retrospect I should've gone for colder.

it's not that blue, in retrospect it may be 8k, it's deffo more than 6. It's a frickin gosdsed down ur typical b road at night. Nuff said. My poor bmw is more of a hack at the moment- practical and practical .. With luggage :( needs must eh?
blue chavtastic headlamp your alright i'd rather not :smt003

So fit a 4200K HID then. Just same white as with good halogen bulbs, but loads more of it.
i dont see the problem with the old ones alright even in pitch black.
