View Full Version : How many of us out of work
Just wondering how many of us decent people have been put out of work...!!!
Under review, we do off-highway trucks for construction and mining. mining sector is not so badly affected, construction side planned production in 2009 is more than halved at the moment.
Out of an office of 30 engineers, we are considering 11 redundancies, of which I may be one.

Things dont seem to look good anywhere, tractor market is starting to dip now too.
My contract is up at Christmas, the engineers here want me to stay on but it is in the hands of the bean counters. Who apparently dont have alot to count.
CAM 73 i guess you are on the round robin biking emails I get off Ben who came up your way contracting for a while? Thats a massive cut, from what he was saying you guys had a huge amount of work to do to bring the trucks upto date.
MY contract was up at the end of October.
I apply for 2-3 jobs a day. Occasionally, a recruitment agent will phone saying that I'm perfect for the role. They say they'll put the cv forward, then NOTHING.
I've even started looking for Permanent positions.

Was "medically" made redundant last year after my man flu. Thought I'd struggle to fill my day but now can't work out how I had time to work.
I avoided the chop in October, but can't see the company not having to do it again!
Its our year end tomorrow and we haven't paid any bills for the past 2 weeks as we are going to pay them on monday, so the account look better!?!?!

Not me but possibly my Mum who works for Woolies.
I am more worried for her than she is I think .... I will pay her bills for her til she finds something if Woolies closes ... she'd do the same for me.
Not just yet, it is on the cards for other company groups as we are split into 3 regions, but our region have not had the round robin letter yet.
We were expecting it to come with our payslips this morning, as our london group of offices had their letters a couple of weeks ago.
I can only assume our group is 'surviving' at the moment.
I'm relavtively cheap anyway, yet earn a very respectable fee in comparison to my more senior associates.
Ive being made redundant twice in the early 00's as the telecoms sector went through a bad time. It feels like bull droppings and makes you feel very small. I have just had my contract extended till the end of March next year, but after that who knows.
Good luck to all you decent people who just want to be able to work and bring home a wage.

have been made redundant twice before when i was in the engineering trade , been windowcleaning for 17 years then got a second job to help me through the winter but i've just been laid off from that so just relying on the windows
Just for you, every time I come across a pile of dog s**t in the street,I'll throw it at a window.
As an apprentice I'm relatively safe (low cost tokeep and generally quite useful to have around).
To rub it in further I used up all my holiday so i only have to work 9 days next month. :)

i never thought woolies would go into administration in a million years, just goes to show. the high street will never be the same again. my earliest childhood memory is shopping in woollies. shocking news, hope your mums okay shelly.:(:(

Completely different to the apprentices at my work, they're f**king useless ;)
Well they're finally sending me to college (after ten months!) so they must have plans to keep me around.
oh and I make a good cup of tea, which helps.

I'm safe in my apprenticeship for this week at least, but whenever I get my results (which should be very soon) if I have passed, I will most likely get paid off. That's what happened to the other apprentices; they pay them off then take them back on straight away to save having to pay them loads when they do finally want rid of them.
But I don't know if I will be taken back on like the others. The boss really hates me and we don't have much work just now

At present safe for the next 9 months, but as My Rail company isgoing through the refrancise bit, unless my present company wins dont know what will happen
This thread is rather depressing.
I work in the Gambling sector, and it's rather saddening to think that our company profits were up recently.
I feel for you all. :(

If uoi've been there over a year you are entitled to something. My Aunt works in HR and deals with stuff like this all the time (although a fair bit more recently).

I'm alright in my job, but I just got an email from a mate saying he was being laid off and two lads I was out with earlier in the week are "at risk". Sorry to hear about folks here having difficulties, particularly those with families to support.
I'm alright in my job
Can all the people with jobs STOP INVADING THIS THREAD!
You don't see me going up to blind people saying, "Guess what? 20-20 vision!"

I really feel for the younger generation with all this uncertainty about. Having worked for myself for over 30+ years and gone through one depression I count my blessings that when I retired last year[Medical] I have since managed to sort out my financial situation and although not well off I have enough to get by fairly comfortably.
Part of my assets are still tied up in the business, now run by my son and he is saying that profit margins are getting less month by month so as an employer the other side of the coin is just as difficult but when it comes to the crunch we can't continue in a loss making situation and unpopular as it makes us,we have to look after our own interest first otherwise 30+ years of hard graft goes down the pan.
