looking at what products i need to maintain the bike as best i can and thought the chain is a good place to start :) so what can i use to clean it up from all the dirt and old grease??

found this but not sure if its a rip off and something else will work just as well?

http://www.muc-off.com/motorcycle/bike_care/chain_cleaner.html

then obviously ill need some chain lube so which is the best chain lube out there

Parrafin is your friend!!! Its my friend and everyone elses friend.

Parrafin soaked foam and rub the chain with it. The dirt will fall off. Go out for a quick spin to warm the chain up then apply your lube.

There are lots of chain lubes out there and people have their own preferences but I use Profi Dry Lube.

I clean it with old engine oil.

Whenever I change the oil in the car's or bike I keep it and use it, it is a FANTASTIC degreaser.

Use a paint brush and get the bike on the centre stand/paddock/abba whatever just give it a good dip and brush (all sides of the chain and sprocket) rotate a bit, repeat until chain is nice and clean..

Get a numpty to stand behind the bike holding a big bit of cardboard, slip it into gear and give it a couple of blips to throw the oil off. It's good for swingarms, wheels forks, plastics (I do not guarantee the use of this method and will not be held responsible should you do something wrong or should your flakey Suzuki paint fall off). But whatever you do please remember this moves the dirt, grease oil, tar but you still need to 'clean' it off.

Also, it might sound WRONG but Baby Oil is your friend also... Seriously.

OK then I'll prove it. Who has a grimey swing arm... Right. You go home tonight, get a rag, squeeze a bit of baby oil on to the rag and rub on the swing arm. Go on, just do a square inch. I bet you are that amazed that you keep going and you get a big shiney clean patch.

Am I right??

Parafin and an old toothbrush.

We've got two bikes with a scotoiler so I'll give it a light manual lube with some scotoil and then the oiler does the rest.

On the Ducati which has no Scotoiler, the same as above to clean but relube with with Wurth Dry Lube.

Hint, Parafin is much much cheaper than dedicated chain cleaning products, get it from B & Q its called Parascene and you'll find it in the gardening section as its used in greenhouse heaters.

+1 for that info. The one on my bike isn't working, and I have NO IDEA how to trace the problem.

They are carb suction powered aren't they? I only have one tube coming out of it and that's the one going to the chain.

I'm struggling to get a scott oiler to fit on the Honda.

+1 on the Scottoiler...instructions aren't great and like anything, once you've fitted it and understand how it works etc, it becomes easier!

I struggled for ages to decide how to position the dispensing tube on my SV and which bits of the kit to use. If I had to fit it again, reckon I could do it in a few mins.

They are carb suction powered aren't they? I only have one tube coming out of it and that's the one going to the chain.Well there is the problem, there should be a tube from your carbs to the scotty to open the valve via suction.

However, if you bike runs well (and I'm sure it does given previous owner) it has probably been disonnected properly rather than just falling out. A leak in the vacuum side would cause loads of fuelling issues.

I'd think so too mate.

I'm actually going to put my hand in my pocket and send it to the garage for a big service (valve clearances). To make sure it gets done right, then I'm coming back up there and you're taking back to that bloody road

; )

That ok?

Well you know who to ask

Sure is, but my bike will be off the road until winter overhaul completed and Maxton bouncy bits fitted....

We like bouncy bits...

No prob mate, I'm a big gurl now. I'm scared of damp let alone wet.

I need to start commuting in the new year when I've got some new gear and ride it through until I'm over it again.

use wurth dry chain lube and autosol the chain links.

fizzwheel

Basically every 100 miles or so. But do it when you get back home as the lube soaks in to warm chain better than it does a cold one. Obviously cold wet winter rides will mean you need to lube and clean more often than you would do during a warm summer... ( when we get one of those that is )

Mr Speirs

Every few hundred miles or so. Or slightly less if you are riding in heavy rain.

A scottoiler full of used engine oil mixed with chainsaw oil. Chain is only clean bit of the bike.

Bigape, whatever could the problem be with fitting a scottoiler to your honda...? :-P
