View Full Version : My Thruxton nightmare...

Hey everyone. Here's my first post to the photo's section:

NG Roadracing final race of the season at Thruxton this year. It started pi$$ing it down as we were lining up to get to the grid so I was out on dry tyres on a very greasy track. Felt very loose all the way round but thought I was coping with the movement and sliding quite well!
This crash happenned on the exit of the flip flop chicane coming onto the start/finish straight, I got on the gas a fraction too hard and it swapped ends on me. The bike is actually facing the wrong way at this point. I'd gone over the handlebars and was sliding along qiute happily when the bike hit me square in the back (lucky I wear a spine protector!) and then fell on me!
And it happenned right in front of the the main stand, and my sister...! How embarressing... :smt099
Sprained knee and a deep muscle hematoma (?) on my inner thigh (from a rearset I think!!) was about it - oh and a new lid, screen, rearsets, yokes... etc. etc.
Dave

Strewth.... still - you seem to have saved the bike a bit by thoughtfully cushioning the bike/tarmac interaction...:smt119

You were lucky. I'd be looking at gloves that come a little higher up your arms if I were you, or leathers that fit properly round the wrists. Those Furygans you've got moved way too much for my liking.

In one of the pics, i could see your skin where the leathers had risen up on your arm

Glad you walked away though, nasty accident! but makes for good pictures i suppose!

Hope you get the bike sorted, how did the season go for you overall?

You know I looked at that first picture and wondered why you were racing with a helmet attached to the side of your bike, when I looked at the next one I realised it was you. OUCH!

What size bike do you race?

New Back paddock stands available from stands R us...

now the bike is on the handel bars, this is how we clean and adjust the tension of the chain.

How not to drain Diesel from the Petrol tank...Fact

So now the primer on the lowers is dry, we can respray the fairings quite easily with the bike upside down...

Thanks for your messages everyone! I didn't expect it to generate 3 pages of responses over a weekend!
Yup, it'll definately go down as one of the 'could have been worse' crashes. Dangers of over riding in the wet.
The bike is my old K3 SV650 roadbike converted for the track. The engine is totally standard, but it's got various suspension/drive/bodywork/subframe/throttle mods, etc.. She's run very well for the last 3 years or so and has hardly missed a beat. As for the furygans, they've served me brilliantly in the past, but from the looks of it some longer gloves or something would definitely be a good idea, I think I just slid along a bit on my side and it must've pulled my leathers up. It is a bit worrying though...
Season over all was a bit quiet - I only managed to do 3 races this year, but I have just got married so the finances had to be diverted for a while. I somehow managed to scrape together entry fees whilst still saving for the honeymoon. My wife wasn't all that happy I crashed!
Had some decent finishes though and had a lot of fun at Oulton Park this year - baking hot sunny day and had a couple of fun battles. So much fun in fact that I decided to push the boat out and get in the last race of the season... Still, it gives me a winter project doesn't it!?
Oh, and I'll give the photographer his dues too - he came running out of the stands with his card when I'd picked myself up and was stood at the marshall point! Fair play to the guy - he didn't charge me for the photos. His addr is: djg-photography.co.uk
Once again, many thanks for the replies!
Cheers,
Dave

Ahh I see you've not really crashed, turning hte bike upside down is the easiest way to change the tyres. Well it works for pushbikes. The only thing out of the ordinary is that you seem to have been distracted by a pound coin a passer by has dropped and decided to examine it :D

Seriously though Im glad you are ok.

Dammnnn well your ok so alls cool.

Every racer has a crash, if you don't you aint pushin hard enough :)

At least you can keep these shots and when your old and saggy you can at least prove you were once cool and have the shots to prove it.

Glad you escaped relatively unscathed. Nice gesture from the photographer. Bet you're glad it didn't happen at Church! (The corner not the place of worship...)
