View Full Version : Help Identifying a GSXR

I've got the chance of a GSXR750 project. Possibly to make into a 7-11. However, I have no real idea what year this is, year of registration and tax data don't agree with the model history here:
http://www.suzukicycles.org/GSX-R-series/GSX-R750_a.shtml
So I'm not sure what year it is etc. It's probably still worth the money, but I'm not sure whether it's worth poking with the 1100 stick...
I have reg details and frame number if that helps.
E640 ERB
(see here: http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/ and you'll know as little as me!)
Frame number is GR716-105235

Ask on www.gixerjunkies.com they should be able to help you.

without the benefit of looking it up I'd say that was a 86 frame, it's not the same as the 88 I had, can't be much more help than that though.
Cheers Mark.
Its one of the slab side ones 85 86 i think
It's an F, G or H model. F models had a shorter swingarm, but a fair few were replaced with the longer G model one by Suzuki, if the owner requested it. J and K models had a slightly different frame and a short stroke engine, they reverted back to the long stroke engine and went with USD forks on the L and M models, before going to watercooling on the WN.

Anyone know if they're strong enough to take the 1100 motor? (I have an account on OSS but have forgotten the details... oops)
Frame number is GR716-105235
You sure that's not GR71G - 105235?
GR71G is the frame designation for F and G models, which would date it as a 1985 or '86 frame. I'd say an '86, because there wasn't a single GSXR750 left in a dealer's showroom right the way through 1985, everyone who could possibly get their hands on them bought every last one of them. There's a remote chance that an '86 model was registered late, but not a hope that an '85 survived the year unregistered.

Plenty of people put Gixer 1100 engines in them with little or no trouble. I'd put a Bandit 1200 lump in myself, cheaper, newer and easier to source a good one, and built on Gixer 1100 cases so it'll go in just as easily. If you need more power, slot some 1100 cams in.

But isn't a GSXR a UJM? ;)
Have fun with it if you get it, looks like it could be interesting.

YC here:
Yeah it was a UJM of the day, weird enough to interest me now though :-P
It is possible I got the frame number written down wrong aye.

Yup I'll be looking into any of the oc engines I can get my hands on.
I have read that the screw adjusted valve ones are easier to get cams and such for rather than the tappet liftered ones. Any truth in this?
I know 1100 will fit but frame might be a little flexible. Ah well only one way to find out.

p.s it has a hydraulic clutch, which I didn't expect.
If I may ask what's a 7-11?

From what I understand from his blathering on, its a big engine in a small frame.

According to December's Performance Bike you can get up to 470bhp out of the 1100 - that should keep even YC quiet until the snows melt!
If I may ask what's a 7-11?
GSXR750 rolling chassis with GSXR1100 motor fitted. It used to be done because there's little difference in the weights of the engines, so it made good sense to slot an 1100 motor in a 750 chassis as the 750 was lighter and handled far better than the bloaty 1100.

Getting it home will be a mission in itself....

If I may ask what's a 7-11?
It's a small local shop for the essientials such as bread and milk, which generally have long opening hours. (coop?)
I'll get my coat :)

Have you ever tuned one? Any idea how much power they can take without replacing rods and stuff?
I haven't tuned any myself, so not sure of what the limits are. The 1200 engine is as strong as the 1100 and I do know of 1200s with stock bottom ends that are pushing the 150bhp mark with tuning, how much further is the sort of thing you should be asking Holeshot Racing or BigCC

Well it's got to liverpool... but the sidestand went through the floor of the trailer on the way there.
Then the bolts holding the sidestand on snapped when trying to remove the bike from the floor of the trailer.
A sign of things to come?
Insure it and leave it in Liverpool. Sooner or later (probably sooner) you'll be able to claim for it.

No we were about 100 miles from liverpool. And I might be pretty good at carrying stuff on the bike, but I don't think a 190kg GSXR will fit on my luggage rack!
Progress is being made... my mate has a trailer...

Sure, I dont know how soon Ill be able to find some nice RSV wheels... probably have to wait till the crashing season. :( Not a nice thought. Have to ask the insurance if they mind too.
But if all goes right then id be happy to sell on my Brembo wheels :D

In an ideal world events would happen as follows:
Firstly you would sell the nicely spruced up Cagiva.
Secondly you would put those funds towards a nice Speed Triple.
Thirdly you might remove the SRAD forks from your SV and stick em on the gixxer
Fourthly I would have your SV - with standard forks cos I'm not fussy :-D
However, in order for number 1 to take place, you must a) ensure I can ride the Cagiva to b) pass my CBT, then you can do what you wish. I don't know where you putting that CB500 engine will fit in...if that was what you wanted to put in it...probably got me numbers mixed up
:-D

Not a bad plan that one...
Nah just one letter off, but a big difference.
CB500 = horrible rat
Cr500 = mentalist 2t off roader.
But I'm not too attached to that plan because it would be totally unusable.

Acquired a GSXR600 K2 swingarm, shock and linkage. Frame will need modifying but with a big enough hammer it will fit.
SRAD750 forks on the way at some point...

Srad forks short, early GSXR frame veeeeerrrrryyy talllll.
I had a 1985 GSXR, scary handling and a very sphincter tightening high speed weave. They slapped tanks waaay before the TLS was thought to be a widow maker.

I just measured the stock forks, like a muppet I didn't write down the measurement (forgot my pen...). But I think they were something like 740mm.
SRADs are 725 or 730, so near enough I reckon. The big height loss will come from putting a 17" wheel in there.
But, it's got a steering damper on it, and I'll be getting the frame braced, using more rigid wheels, forks, arm, proper tyres. And I can within reason do what I want with the rear ride height.
Does a fiery ball of death sound iminent? :-P

The subframes gotta go, or it needs a higher seat, parks the lump at the back of the tank right in your b0llocks.
Stripped some bits off today. Turns out it's got dyna coils, taylor leads. And the carbs full of rusty varnish, and some light surface rust on the cams.
The best subbie and seat to me anyways is off a 2003 R1, it's angular enough to go with the slabby tank and updates the rear end with one of the neatest bike bums in recent memory IMHO o' course...
