View Full Version : new telly..
well i'v had my telly for 14 years and its done me proud.. but its time for a new one..
so i have been looking at the deal comet have on at the moment for a panasonic th-42pz8b at £599...
http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/507768/PANASONIC-TH-42PZ8BA?cm_mmc=google-_-homeentertainment-_-televisions-_-plasmaandlcdtvs
was wondering if anyone has one of these...
my toshiba has an exelant picture and i'm worried that i wont get a decent picture with a new flat panel.. i have seen a lot at mates houses and they all look pixilated and motion sick...
I'm no expert but this is the number you need to take into account the most
Contrast ratio 20000:1
The bigger the better.
Ps. 20000:1 isn't half bad but for the money you might be able to do better
my living room is north facing so i dont really get sun glare...
i'm a bit worried about flat panel stuff as i have a samsung syncmaster 2232bw computer monitor and watching dvd's makes me feel a bit sick.. its well bright enough at 3000:1 so 20000:1 would be great i reckon...

I bought the Panasonic th-42pz8b about 3 months ago (for £699!!!) but have to say I'm very impressed with it. Had a Panasonic 37 previously which was good but the new model has much deeper blacks and more natural colour esp. on blueray movies which look flawless!
Highly recomended.

how do you find terrestrial tv (i have cable and the picture on my crt is great) as this is what we normally watch...
We got our Panasonic TV about 2 months ago, absolutely marvelous. Definitely recomend their telly's.
this all sounds good... i'm getting more and more tempted....

don't use the terrestrial on it mate, have sky+ wired in but will prob get sky-hd soon to get the most from it.
ok, lets put this into a bit of perspective... i spent £1200 on my toshiba crt (not even wide screen) 14 years ago. it has done a fabulous job, but as more and more programs are being aired in wide screen its starting to p!ss me and the family off....
the picture quality on the toshiba is first class.. and now the kids are much older they have stopped throwing stuff at the tv.. its time for a new one...
i'm just a bit worried that the picture quality is not going to match my old toshiba....

If I had a top quality telly(or anything else)that had given sterling service for 14 years and still going strong Id keep it.

Plasma are the better TV's still. I think that would be an Excellent choice :D
hmmm .. just phoned virgin and asked about what channels are HD.. ermmm just bbc and movies ... wtf.... for £75 installation and £5 a month .. ermm no thanks...
well just been to see it up at comet... nice... out of stock till 14th dec. :-( but for £600 i can wait... big difference in fast moving stuff.. lcd's were pixelated and motion trails were very noticeable... plasma was a lot better.. not perfect but a lot better... another thing i noticed was that lcd's were a lot brighter but the blacks were washed out with a blue tint to them.. where as the plasma was a bit duller but the blacks were black..

Remember in places like comet and such the signal is split many many times to feed all the TV's which ultimately causes some degredation in quality. I chose my TV on the basis that still after all this splitting it still looked great.
It was a toss up between an LG and a Sony. LG being the better quality but at a much larger price. Sony was still very good and also had digital freeview inside the actual telly so only one remote. I chose the Sony 40" Bravia and got it for £599 last January.
Same thing that Hangman has posted actually. :)

to be honest im not into the new tft lcd plasma screens etc because they all seem to be pixelated and that looks naff in my opinion.
i just bought a sony trinitron 28inch flat screen television off my mate, its bulky but i reckon the picture is better than most of the new tft lcd screens etc. theres no pixelation or slow motion ness (if thats even a word) lol

37" Panasonic plazma. I spent months trying to decide between plazma / LCD, overall, I reckon the plazma has it on picture quality. Older shows will sometimes be a little pixelated but the newer one's are great.
Just make sure it's not too big for the room, they always seem bigger when you get 'em home

The pixelation is because the new screens are sharper and higher definition than old CRTs. They show up flaws in the picture that you just wouldn't notice on an older telly. Of course, when you're watching high-definition material on and lcd or plasma, then you really notice their advantages over older TVs.
