View Full Version : Recomend some boots (not race boots)
Hi All
Can anyone recommend a good pair of winter or all season (as long as they are waterproof and warm) boots.
Just discovered a hole in the side of one of one of my boots so feet are getting a tad wet and cold.
Not looking for any sort of race boot more a touring style.
Don't want to spend a fortune but around the £100 to £150 mark.

I wear my A* SMX-4 waterproof boots year round. Warm enough with decent socks, water proof so far (18K miles) and comfy for long days on the bike. They are top end of your price range but I'm sure you could get a deal somewhere.
Downside is they are quite a race boot style and you stated you don't want race boots.

Will have a look anyway, cheers mate.

If only they were a few sizes bigger.

Sidi Canyons (http://www.bikersdirect.co.uk/Sidi-Canyon-Goretex_A8Y7J.aspx) are what I went for - got them just before AR08, used them almost daily - even wore them on the plane to and from NZ.....
Comfortable and so far waterproof.
Even within your price-range

I would seriously recommend the SMX4WP also. As per Luckypants I have worn them nearly everyday. I had a major off in them and they stood up to the test very vey well. I don't think they are that "racey"......I have a pair of the SMX4 Plus race boots also for summer (if we ever get one) riding......now they are "racey".

Make sure you look at the waterproof ones, not the standard SMX-4. This is the ones I have http://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/shop/product_info.php/cPath/3_140/products_id/3863
i like daytonas dont know if you'd get a pair for under £200 though really good quality imho.

altberg? £20 sqids above budget but have won ride power 3 or 4 years running, issued to the services i understand.
£20 down my local army-surplus store, ex-german army 'para' style boots, gortex lined, comfy and tough as feck...
... also leaves you a fair few pennies for something else. ;)

They used to be my boot of choice, though it can be hard sometimes to find a pair that aren't worn out.

I had the other problem with British boots, finding a pair that were small enough for me. Strangely I could always get hold of a German pair, virtually unworn too - they obviously don't have any forces personnel with little feet and so ship all their unwanted size 5's over here for me. ;)

Lucky you. All of the decent ones in size 10 get sold quickly.
I can't imagine that there's that much call for size 5's.

Thanks guys, better go and have a think about it.
Must admit I'm tempted by the para boots.
Trawl around a few army surplus places, markets etc - as long as the uppers are in good nick you can get them re-soled. Though check out your local Timpsons etc first as that can be about £20 itself - still a good cheap option though.

Do you not find it a bit of a pain with all the laces or is there a zip on the German ones? Just comparing it to my British standard issue ones.
My pairs have always had that 'grasping eyelet' just on the ankle/bend of the boot, along with really long laces. So to take them off you just loosen the lacing off down the ankle and you're done - or then put boot on, pull laces tight over foot (which then gets held by the graspy thing) then simply pull remainder of lacing through the top.
Though one pair I owned in the dim and distant past had those hook type eyelets all up the ankle - so just pull tight over the foot then zig-zag the laces up to the top.
Thinking about it, they are probably just as quick to put on/take off as my zip/velcro Sidi's.

I have Oxtar Performance SS.
I don't think Oxtar are around anymore but these boots are really comfortable on and off bike and I've used mine for the last 3 years. Only downside is they are a wee bit cold on th etoes in the cold weather (just wear thick/warm socks).
