View Full Version : Hello 650'ers....
hi to everyone on the forum.. been reading for a few weeks now but wasn't sure whether to sign up or not.
reason being.. i have a confession to make [-o< i don't actually own an SV!
i passed my test a few weeks back but am still on my DT 125 (did anyone have one?). anyway my mate rides a Versys 650 and really wants me to get a bigger bike. to be honest, i want one aswell - motorway is a bit s*** on an unfaired 125.
We've been looking at the SV and i'm pretty much sold on it; but before i put up the 125 for sale, i need to work out exactly what SV to go for, and what things to look out for when buying one. maybe you guys (and grls) can help me :-D In particular i wanted to know pros/cons of injection + carbs and the curvy/pointy debate. i can't make sense of much of it.
i realise i'm going on a bit and this is just my first post, so i'll end here. Hi to you all once again, thanks for reading mi first post :)

Croeso!
There is not really a pointy vs curvy debate, just good natured ribbing of each other. Of course, if you get a pointy I'll never speak to you again!
Curvy bikes have more rounded body work and frame, carburettor fed engines and were produced from 99-02.
Pointy bikes have more angular styling and boxy frame, injected engines and are the current model from 2002 on.
Not a lot of difference between the two models in terms of performance, ease of use or abilty. Those who own curvy's will like them, those who own pointies like them.

oooo thank you for that.... i'm not fussed, going to go for a naked i think. do you know about restriction, which one is cheaper (to get fitted at certificated)
also i wonder if anyone is going to the bike show in birmingham at the NEC next week?
off to work now... back sundayy

Here is a thread with details of who is going when to the NEC :D

Both versions of the bike are easy to restrict to 33bhp. The pointy (injected) model is easiest to do DIY as you get a replacement ECU complete with certificate. Just remove full power ECU and pluf in restricted one. Keep the full power ECU for when your restriction ends, flog the restricted ECU on for what you paid for it. These are often for sale second hand on here or Ebay for little money.
Curvys are restricted mechanically by adding some washers to the carbs to restrict air flow. Kits for this come up for sale second hand on here also. Not sure how you get it certified though. Someone like Plowsie or ASH will be along in a moment with the full scoop in restricting curvies.

Go for whichever you can afford/prefer the looks of in the pointy vs curvy debate.
Personally I'd go for a faired bike as it makes touring/long trips/motorways etc a lot more bearable. You may not want one now but after a year you may find yourself heading off somewhere on an adventure or using your bnew bigger bike in a different way. But then there's plenty of people here on nakeds who put the miles in so it's all personal choice.
PS Hello from Haarlem.

Welcome :D
Pointy/curvy debate as seen is largely aesthetic really. They both have their own list of things that can go wrong but both lists are really very short. I would gently nudge that some of the curvies are getting on in years a bit now though :D
Nekkid versus faired - you'll definitely have a bigger choice of faired bikes so you'll likely find there is little appreciable price difference between the two and the bigger choice of faired bikes might help you find a mint one easier.
Pros/Cons of carbs v fuel injection:
Well set up carbs should be slightly smoother than the pointy's fuel injection. Pointy fuel injection isn't the best in the world but it is by no means the worst, it's just ok.
Fuel injection does have it's own benefits, no carb icing, no messing around with choke, and whilst someone will doubtless spin a tale of woe, mine has never once required a second stab of the starter button in 18 months despite being left out in all weathers, being sent down the road on it's side twice, and being stood for two months.
Pointy has a clock, curvy doesn't :D Ok, so you can fix the clockless curvy pretty easily if you want.
Whasuuuuup!
Curvey - Carbed (Carb icing in cold weather) older, slightly different to ride than a pointy one, a classic.
Pointy - Fuel injected, Slightly more power, a bit snatchy on part throttle compared to Curvey but you would have to ride them back to back to notice it.
Pick a shape you like and buy it.
Things to look for: Flakey paint everywhere (Sadly a suzuki trait), general good maintaince (Dealer or a proven home service). Look for scuffs etc on bar ends, foot pegs and suchlike for evidence of being on the floor. The cam chains rattle after a certain milage. This can be a problem, but mine have never got worse in 60000 miles. Erm, rust on the subframe. To be hoenst, if it looks in good nick and you are happy with any servicing records/recipts, then go for it. There probably isnt a question that hasnt been asked before. Yes the suspension is soft, yes the brakes are not as good as they could be but more than up to the job and a Faired bike would be better if you are motorwaying it anywhere.

How much do you want to spend?
Curvys are older and cheaper.Getting a bike restricted properly with a certificate costs about £120 or more I think because its a rip off.Insurance will cost you a lot more than the 125 and you may find your existing policy cant be upgraded so having to cancel it and take out a new one.You then lose any part year no claims and dont get much money back either.
Nothing wrong with the naked version,as you can put a small screen on it to deflect 90% of the windblast. They are a tad cheaper and a group lower insurance.
colour is more important....... yellow being the fastest followed by black then red then silver then blue

what things to look out for
If you look out for a fenda extenda that'll save you from either fitting one yourself or riding home on one cylinder, whichever comes first.
As for models, if you can get your hands on a rare and much sought after silver K6 you'll be the envy of the Org. :p
Welcome by the way.

real men ride curvies cos ( and i'm 3 crashes in) there indistructable and what does need fixed is cheapish and asmuch as some will spout yello one arent faster they just ride faster cos they dont want to be seen on them and they couldnt get the magnificent blue one( i'm not biasest honest) but seriously just get the best nick bike you can for your budget c or p youll love it to bits anyway

Not sure if you've picked this up, but the 'S' models are faired and non S are naked. Pointy S in supersonic silver is, as we all know but are reluctant to admit, superior. Especially K3 ones (meaning 2003 model year, K1=2001 etc). Get some good tyres and your confidence will improve dramatically. Welcome to the pleasure dome, by the way, enjoy that V-twin noise! :-)

Hello fella. As someone has already said, go for a faired SV

Agree Pointy in silver and the K3 is the best to go for but each to there own i suppose. Welcome as well.:)

Ow do :)
If you go for a curvy there is a lot less to go wrong (not as many electronic gizmos)
Plus they look a lot nicer if you are going Nekkidd :):):):)
OOh & I've just realised I've hit 1500 posts :)

I love Pointy's cause I have one but like the riding position on nekkids. !!! Why not go for a test ride see which one if for you.
Good luck with your purchase x

cheers custard... the money from the SALE of the DT will go toward [dare i say it] the faired pointy! my brother left an old moped in our front garden, on the 3rd night it was gone
thanks to every1 for replying, this is a damn good community. i think i'm going to go for the pointy - a clock is invaluable for the commute - and i'll be repeating a trip to wales in the summer so fairing too :-D as for colour, it's gona come second to condition. black with gold bits n bobs would be pimpy though.
thanks Miss YC, i coloured it in all by myself! can you tell me actually.. whats an SV like to go on the back of? i've been on my own dt, brothers R6, mates R1100 and other mates versys if you can compare to any of those. thank yoooooooooou
i'm half way through my 2nd year of no claims, and i can't upgrade the policy its 125 only... i can cope with losing a 2nd year i think.

Lissa will be the best lady to comment on that!
I find the SV very comfy but I don't have owt to compare it to I'm afraid. It's got a nice sized seat too compared to some of those real sporty bikes, so you're not constantly perching lol.
i see i see.. i guess i'll find out when i have a good look at one this week; i found with the versys that u can't press against the pegs so matey can't give it full throttle without my legs flying up by his head. had some close calls with that. whereas the R6 is more about clinging on for dear life and not flying away. i am off to milton keynes now to find the apple shop.. damn I-phone is broke.

hehe I've got a mate who's fella has an R1, she said she's nearly been chucked off the back of that a few times, has to cling round his waist for dear life too :D
Why are you on about pillioning when surely you'll be riding it?
