Late model Golf VR6s are a bit sparse over here in Holland on the 2nd hand car market, and 306 Gti-6s are cheaper than I first thought, so I'm off to look at a couple.
Anyone on here had one, what did you think? How did it compare to other cars? Any things to looks out for or best/worst features?
What kind of mileage are they good for?
What colour should I go for ;)
Thanks, Tim in Decisive.

More importantly, what is their fuel consumption like when towing a bike trailer?

I've given up caring about how much fuel things burn ;) As long as it gets me to the 'Ring dry I'll be happy :)

Yep, I've already had a look at the buyer's guide there, looking for a balanced opinion from people who aren't entusiasts! From what I can gather from over there they're a good car that require the cambelts changing quite often, and have a myriad of annoying electrical issues. I may get one...

had couple of 306's but not the GTI 6.
Good cars, but relativly low tech which is nice.. My dad has had two also and one finally expired at 230k.

Tim, you're becoming a ' weekend worrier ' you've been away too long!
I thought about getting a 306 some time back, ask on Pistonheads Tim for a more balanced opinion. I think theyre regarded as a fairly decent buy, I was looking at the Diesel rather than the petrol variants so I was focusing on the fuel pump rather than anything else. A thorough check on electrics and any wear on the interior as the seats tend to become pretty worn. Ive sat in a few with squeaky seats where I could feel the springs
Tim you not fancy going for another Estate? Can you pick up Gallant Estates over there? Mitsubishi Legnum - much like your old Scooby but much more mean looking.

I had a 2.0 XSi, not as highly tuned but great car. The interior are not great but the GT-i 6 does get half leather and the 6 speed box is great. I remember at the time they pitted the 6 at much more expensive competition as it was such a quick and good handling car. I know someone who had one and they had no problems, nor did I with the xsi except sqeeky seat belt (strangley common in the cold with 306)

Funny you should mention black, I'm off to look at this one on Wednesday:

The price is a little salty, but they handle better than a golf straight out of the box so I shouldn't have to fork out for new suspension.
And as for estates, road tax is based on weight out here, so looking for as light a car as possible, it'll also be required to go round the 'Ring, so added lightness is always handy.

My experiance with french cars - mostly peugeots has been shocking. Poor build quality and reliability.
Good luck if you get one. :)

Well, I've gone and got the black 306 GTi, hopefully pick it up this weekend. It's then a case of saving for some track tyres and pads before hitting the Nordschleife early next year. It felt a lot shaper than the VR6 Golf I drove, and had a very tidy interior, so apart from the price I'm happy :)

The 306 GTi actually has a reputation as being pretty tough mechanically, and it was all pretty tight, even over speed bumps and cobbled roads.
But time will tell.......
I looked at these a couple of years back but good ones where to expensive. I done a lot of research and other than the usual Pug triats (Siezed torsion beam, siezing rear calipers) they are good cars. The 6speed box can be fragile if abused but the engine is near bullit proof. I found plenty of high milage cars that had been looked after well and where great.
Im sure Daimo the car nut will be along soon and tell you all you need to know!
Mate of mine had one and he used to thrash the t!ts off it - he put 60k on it in two and a bit years (to a total of 110k) and nothing major went wrong at all - good cars! Dont forget the Citroen Xsara VTS - same engine but with a 5-speed gearbox... Quite a Q-car

Aye it will, its probably a fair bit lighter and that VR6 lump is quite heavy as well.
Hmm, I fancied a 306 earlier this year but I was put off with all the bad stories about them. Im not sure what my next car will be, but the A3 1.8T does appeal.... I love the S3 but dont think I could justify the price.

Really? who told you that lol?
I have had lots of peugeots including 306's .......now I love them, I love the way they handle, I love the character..............BUT they do not have a reputation for being mechanically tough, especially the GTI-6.
I had a black 3dr (defo the best colour and door option), you need to watch out for the water pump every two years or 40kish......and the same goes for the cambelt tensionser. The gearbox can also be a problem unless your gentle.
If you mess with the suspension then droplinks and wishbone bushes will be going every 3 months.....they are cheap to fix if your handy with a spanner.
I would still recommend the GTI-6, Its fast and its very fun to drive.....but dont expect it to be an easy ride as things will probably go wrong.
Good for 20mpg as well lol.
One of my old black 3dr 306's

Glad you have seen the error of your ways! ;)
Mate of mine did a 306 a few years ago with a full bodykit of some kind but refused to fit Lexus lights - all his "krooze" mates told him that it needed them to "finish it off" but he never fitted them - I had more respect for him after that

A guy I met at the 'Ring who track days his 306 Rallye seemed to find his pretty strong as a track car. I know about the cambelt/water pump issues, but as long as these are done the engines seem to go on for a fair old whack. Thanks for the suspension info, going to keep it standard for the winter and first couple of 'Ring trips until I get used to the car, although I may fit a front strut brace. Brake pads/fluid and possibly hoses and some stickier tyres will be the first mods, got to try and not get carried away and remember that the bike is the main 'Ring tool. Although depending on things it may end up being caged/harnessed etc in a year or two.
Your old one looks nice and clean, although I'm no fan of aftermarket body kits, but we all go through stages ;)

Yeah I switched to a 1.9gti and 106 rallye track slags after the 306 saw the error of my way/wasted money.

Ahem 'fake' 106 rallye :smt019
On the GTi-6, watch out for them cambelt issues, Lowest one I heard of snapping was at 23K (2 years old)
I think its to do with the tensioner siezing. (I should read the previous post more closely!)
Oh, and the steering lock is useless, thanks the the 6th gear. 5 point turns in future!

Yep the bloke selling it to me mentioned about the steering lock, apparently there are more turns one way than the other when starting from straight ahead.
