View Full Version : Putting Zuky to bed

I cleaned Zuky today and decided that it is probably the last time in a while she will be out on tarmac. I simply don't enjoy the cold and riding in the cold I would hate so she is going to sleep for the winter.

Ride mag says to hibernate your bike you should:-

Clean the bike (done)
Take battery off or put on optimate (done)
Drain fuel tank (or put Silkolene Pro FST in tank)
Blank off air intakes (so little furry creatures dont make their home in it??)
Coat collector box with WD40
Put paper between brake discs to prevent them from sticking
But blocks of wood under tyres to prevent contact with cold floor
This would mean my bike is better treated than my dog, are these necessary things to do?

Shouldn't drain the tank. You should brim it so that it can't rust. And put in a fuel preservative to keep the petrol fresh.

That's good cause she has a full tank ! Phew. I will go get some stuff to put in, fankoo

My bike doesn't have a collector so can't do that. I could put paper in between the pads but I need to be moving my bike about in the garage. Rather than blocks of wood I'm gonna put it on the paddock stands to keep the weight off the tyres. Don't think anything will be getting in the air intake.

Clean the bike (done)

Take battery off or put on optimate (done)
Fill tank to brim & put a fuel stabiliser in
Blank off air intakes (so little furry creatures dont make their home in it??)

But blocks of wood under tyres to prevent contact with cold floor
Coat bike with acf50
Cover bike up(& tuck it in;))
Change oil & filter on returning to road
This would mean my bike is better treated than my dog, are these necessary things to do?
Put mine away a couple of weeks back & the above is exactly what was done HTH.

Mmm I nearly did today as the sun was out, but I nearly lost it in car, did an awesome skid control (sorry to my passenger) and that made me decide to put bike away.

I have not got your riding experience Daz and my mind is on many other things and I am not totally relaxed, looking for diesel on road / wet leaves blah blah is just another added thing for me to concentrate on.

Maybe when I am a good rider and more relaxed I will venture out in silly weather. If I dropped her now I would simply give up.

SO I am being sensible, think I need to apply that to my driving after my mishap this weekend LOL

150BHP and rear wheel drive hehe, if traction control is on i get a big amber triangle flash on my dash board every time the wheels loose traction which is anoying so i turn that system off which makes the car come alive :smt040

Clean the bike (done)to expose fresh metal to rust

Take battery off or put on optimate (done)
Drain fuel tank (or put Silkolene Pro FST in tank) so that there's nothing keeping oxygen and damp off the inside
Blank off air intakes (so little furry creatures dont make their home in it??) yup
Coat collector box with WD40 not an issue on the SV which has a stainless pipe
Put paper between brake discs to prevent them from sticking Nah
But blocks of wood under tyres to prevent contact with cold floor Won't stop flat spots, just move it about every fortnight

So really not a lot of use. Change the oil and give it all a good burst of ACF50. Be right.

Claire, just imagine how nice it would be if there was a GSXR750 in your garage to keep the SV's spot warm for it

i would just chuck it on the optimate, and if its a nice day go out on it

I think she'll need a lot more buttering up than that  :D

Seems sensible to put it away Shell if you're really not going to use it and don't need it, at least you have somewhere to store it properly as opposed to sat outside with just a cover for protection

They're an advanced battery charger which you leave attatched to the bike, keeps the battery in good health when not in use.

arcdef
01-12-08, 11:44 PM
surely for the price of that, aswell as electricity usage it would be cheaper to run the risk of the old battery and replacing if it dies?

yorkie_chris
01-12-08, 11:46 PM
You will kill a battery a year if you don't use the bike

+1

I've found that riding them through the winter, even if only occassionally is better than putting one into hibernation.
And there's always a few nice days...

fair point about going through batteries every year!! typical me not looking outside the box...... well seeing as i only just got my bike i wont be putting it to any form of sleep!! atleast aiming to ride once a week for a good 20 miles if anything just to get some experience in the wet as i feel its the best thing for you!
