Don't have an empty beer crate, although could go and buy a full one I suppose. The ebay stand looks more stable as I would probably knock it off a crate. Been out today and had a play round some lanes but just need some new tyres and a bit more power would be nice, although waiting for some lower geared sprockets which should help as I wont be using it on the motorway.
is it the sm version or the one with offroad tyres on it.

Go nick one from outside back of a pub, it's dark.

Its the S with bald knobby tyres but new MT21s on the way.
No point nicking a DRZ because I already have one you see, but not a bad idea looking for a crate- probably find one lying about somewhere when I'm out with the dog later.

The cheapo one I had was tricky to get it up (pnaar) then it used to come down with a jolt. This one is nice and smooth.
The DRZ isn't the lightest so unless you are a big bloke I don't reckon the non-telescopic ones (metal beer crates) are much cop.
Good tyre choice by all accounts, what I am going to try on my X-C most like.
