View Full Version : Baba in hosptital

Just got back from the hospital..my daughter has had a febrile convulsion whilst at her grandma's.
This is her first one so she is staying in hospital overnight and the wife is with her.
It's been a weird day anyway.
Started with the neighbour playing Celine Dion songs at 8:30. Then the wife decides that I should stop putting off the jobs that need doing on the bike ( that's just freaky ).
The wife goes out to town to get herself some birthday presents ( and yes it is her birthday today!! ) and forgets to tell me that her mum IS having baba, so there's the knock on the door, i get baba ready and send her packing to her grandma's.
At this time I think sod it, may as well try and put the tail-tidy on the bike ( ermax one ). After 4 hours of not knowing what i'm doing and getting myself cut and freezing hands I get the oem undertray off.
Hmm time for a brew me thinks, then the phone call, I dash round to grandma's ( slipping and sliding on the way ) to find baba curled up on the floor, butt naked, out cold and shivering like she has just been in a frozen lake.
The wife is already there on the phone speaking to a doctor. After 10 minutes the ambulance arrives and off baba and I go to the hospital with the wife following.
I need a drink!
Anyway, baba seems to be fine at the moment and the wife has been so calm, it's amazing!
I'm not freaking out at mo, just need to write things down. It might help me worry a bit less.
Off to get a drink now.
Ste.

Jez that doesnt sound to clever. Hope she recovers OK.
My daughter had a couple of these, the first of these was just as I left the doctors cos I knew something was wrong with her but he dismissed me.
He later admitted that he was worried that he'd missed pnemonia. Tosser.
Anyway she stayed in two nights at hospital, so don't worry if they keep her in an extra day, it's the best place for her to be.
She'll be fine, make the most of a quiet night to yourself!
By the way, how old is she?
slark01
11-12-08, 09:52 PM
She'll be 2 on the 29th.
What gets me is how quick it has happened, she was fine this morning.
No indications of any illness. Running around, being annoying as usual ;-) .
Ah, if she's nearly two then they probably would keep her in longer, as it's more unusual to have these fits as they get older, was it because of a high temperature?
slark01
11-12-08, 09:56 PM
Apparently so!
The thermometer reading from the medic was 39.2.
Ouch, that's high. Her Gran did the right thing with getting her clothes off for her to cool down. (Grans always know best! ;))
If you're wife is staying overnight in hospital she won't get much sleep, if I remember right they checked my daughter's temperate every hour.
She'll be fine, but I know how much of a worry it is. Don't have too much to drink in case you're needed!

Blooming heck Ste what a fright for you all. Am glad she seems to be ok and she`s in the best place for now.
Is unbelievable how kids can be fine one minute then really poorly the next! Is usually down to some sort of infection and resulting high temperature (with my son was always an ear infection). I`m sure that with some anti biotics she`ll be right as rain and home in no time :grouphug:

Wishing your little girl a speedy recovery. Same thing happened to my little fella when he was about the same age :-( Happened on leaving the doctors. It was one of the most scary moments of my life. The receptionist called an ambulance and was told there were none available! I had to phone around to get a lift. I was in a right state. I stayed the night with him in hospital. He recovered quickly, and it hasn't happened since *touches wood*
All the best mate,
Mark

Far more common than you'd think, basically little ones can't regulate their temp which is the cause of the convulsion, once they are cooled down they're normally fine,of course you have to make sure nothing serious is causing the high temp, but it's normally obvious, we took most to hospital, but to be honest most of the time it was more for the parents than the kids.
Unless there is anything else wrong, I wouldn't worry to much.
Cheers Mark.
It was one of the most scary moments of my life.
I know that feeling well. The most terrifying 13 seconds of my life were when my youngest stopped breathing in bed. I don't think I slept for a month after that as I was constantly checking!!
I truly feel for you & your family Ste, hopefully the little one will pull through it quickly. Keep us all posted, please.
yup happened to my son just before his 2nd birthday..you read about it but never really think its going to happen. Now most parents I have spoken to have had an episode. Very very scary at first ..it was the middle of the night, ambulance A&E stayed till the morning. He had 40c with our braun in ear thermometer. We now know to give paracetemol + ibuprofen when his temp goes 38c. He had another fit within a month of the first one and just dropped in the street. No sign of temperature. So far touch wood no other fits in 1 year. Its something they will grow out of by 6 so a few more years to go. As the nurse that was treating us also said that its always worth calling the ambulance out to check them out as we live 10miles away from the hospital. Chin up, take care of the family

Thanks guys/gals, feeling better.:)
Oh and thank you for the info, that does help!
Btw - just realised, not even took my coat off yet!
This house is out in the sticks compared to where we used to live, so being able to talk to people here is really cool.
Damn, gonna quit the booze now, getting a little emotional, lol
I think Sophie was in the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital 3 times before the age of 2 with the same thing... I was breathylised on one of the return trips at 2.30am:rolleyes: I told the officer no of course I hadn't been drinking, except for disgusting hospital tea. I had to blow nonetheless:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: Anyway, as soon as they cooled her down with a water vapour machine she was as right as rain, and there is no lasting damage. Well tantrums and throwing things at me apart, that is:D

cheers guys/gals :-)
Been at the hospital nearly all day, most of which baba spent sleeping.
She still has a slightly high temperature, but it is manageable with calpol.
It's a viral infection, how she got it I dunno as she has not been near anyone with problems nor touched anything that she shouldn't.
The wife is knackered but amazingly is still rockin' on, right now she has popped out to asda to do some essential shopping!
She wants to rota shifts over night to keep an eye on baba, sod that, gonna let her sleep.
As for the neighbour, well he's middle aged single chap with a big black merc. A very strange but friendly enough person.
Thank you all for your kind, sometimes amuzing words.
:D:salut::thumbsup:
Is she still in or home now?
When Evie got home I spent three nights sleeping on her floor, until I'd convinced myself I wasn't being paranoid!

oops, yes she's at home now.
I have my pda set up as a wireless webcam so I can monitor whilst downstairs.
Not a perfect picture, but it works.

Glad there is an easily managed cause for it as it means you won't be worrying about it so much in the future. Glad she's ok and give her a hug from the org.
Sorry just seen this. Must have been so worrying for you all. I hope Baba will soon be running around and being annoying as usual ;), at least she is back home now :-D
Glad she's back home, hope you manage to get some sleep!

She has done it again, this time she scared the living daylights out of my parents, and she was out for the count for about 3 1/2 hours.
So baba is in hospital untill the doc knows for sure what caused it.
Phoned the wife while she was at work...
" Fi, baba has had another seizure."
"Again!" sigh "ok i'll be there as soon as I can."
BEEEEEPPPPP.
"WTF!"
So now the wife is at the hospital and i'm at home, gives me an opportunity to do some gaming without interruptions.
Might have a few beers as well.

24-02-09, 08:07 PM
Well at least it's not a big shock for you this time. As has been said, sometimes kids just have seizures and eventually they just stop!
Still, I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is just another one of those seizures to not worry about.
The joys of parenthood:rolleyes:
Its happened to my youngest a few times and everytime it happens I'm usually away at work, end up racing back like a loon to get to the hospital, however both the girls are running a high temp tonight so I'm checking every 30 mins on them. Thing is the youngest is 2 on Thursday so some birthday she is going to have if it all goes off yet again.
Ooh, almost 1/4 past, time to check again:smt089
Hope your little one is ok soon.

Hope you're little girl is back home, fit and well soon. The staff at the BRi managed to bring my friends 5 week old baby boy back after a 2 hour arrest and he's still worrying the life out of us all by the occasional panic trip back to hospital. It amazes me how they can be so ill one minute and right as rain the next.
Have a good relaxing night while you're on your own and have breakfast waiting for your wife in the morning, I doubt she'll have had much sleep with all the obs that the nurses do through the night!
Hope she's back with you soon!

UPDATE:
Just found out why my daughter was out of it for 3 1/2 hours....Diazepam!
Apparently the paramedic gave ( now unsure of quantity ) 5mg of this drug.
The nurses at the hospital were not happy about that and reading up on it i'm not happy either.
She is still very ill and she has a glazed look, but she is coherent and a little chatty.
She'll be home in a bit so hopefully things can get back to normal.
Thanks Stewie for the offer, mucho appreciated.
Thanks guys/girls
Ste.
PS - never did get to do some gaming or drink. :-(

They do use diazepam to sotp fitting sometimes, as the fitting itself can cause long term problems if it was going on for too long, to *break* the fit so to speak.
What does concern me was that the nurses apparently weren't aware of this, leaving you and your wife very worried for 3 hours when you daughter was *out of it*- also, if the nurses or docs didn't know, it's very fortunate she wasn't given more! There should be a handover where vital signs/drugs given are noted.
Seriously- explain that when you see the doc, if she's going to be prone to these fits when she is young, it#s worth them knowing about this mistake in case it happens again. Also, say about your worries about the drug in the first place, if you have read up on it. This si te here shows the protocol http://www.childadvocacyinternational.co.uk/publications/pathways/Visio-Prolonged-fitting-in-a-child.pdf
I'm glad she's getting back to normal, hope you and your wife are ok too

Sorry to hear its happened again, I hope she gets better soon.
Do they know what caused the first and second fit? Or did it happen for no apparent reason? My friends sister had numerous seizures over a very short space of time and although she wasn't strictly epileptic, they ended up giving her epilepsy medication for two years to control it. Seems to have got better now.
I agree with what Shonadoll has said - perhaps your daughter doesn't agree with Diazepam at that dose.
Maria
Hope the little one gets better soon ... kids can be quite hardy you know.
The docs thought my son had a viral infection when had 2 inside a month so I'm sure they're being very thorough. Also they sent my son to have an ?MRI scan? ( not sure what it was called) They attached 20 odd probes to their scalp whilst they are sitting and check brain for readings. Looks scary but it tells them if they are susceptible to having epileptic fits. You have to keep them occupied while it happens. Hope everything gets back on an even keel.

Hope your little'un is feeling better. Personally I would ask to be referred to a paediatric neurologist.
