View Full Version : Hello from a newbie!!!!!!
Hi, I'm Lou M's daughter and I'm getting my first bike in March. So excited!!
Met a few of you at the bike show on Saturday.
Thought I'd join to get a few tips.

Hello! You found us then!
I'm thinking of getting a vespa 50cc, then a Varadero 125cc then looking for an SV after that because I liked my mum's.
Welcome!! I sincerely hope your mum has warned you about us all!! :D

Personally, I'd avoid anything less than 125cc's. Firstly, what's the point in being limited to 30mph everywhere, when the CBT will allow you to get up to 70mph? Granted the extra power means you run the risk of getting points for speeding etc, but it also gives you a chance of getting out of a tricky situation using a little power.
More importantly IMO, being stuck at 30mph isn't very safe. Even cities have large areas that are 40mph limits. Countless times I've seen scooter riders in the gutters just to allow traffic to overtake, and I truly feel sorry for them.
As for the Varadero 125, I considered it originally. But then I questioned why I wanted to spend a few grand on a 125cc engine with the weight of a bigger bike. From many conversations I've had, I made the right choice in avoiding it. Apparently it's a very sluggish beast. Badger is the person to talk to about the Vara's, as I know he had one.
Whatever path you choose, we won't point & laugh (much ;) ). At least you'll be cutting your teeth gradually & not just doing DAS & jumping on to a super sports spec bike.

greetings eviem. for a first time bike i'd be tempted to opt for a scooter, a little road experience never hurt anybody. but its got to be a lambretta.

in and around town though baph theres not much any better. they get into nooks and crannies that i'd never attempt.

Just because one person wouldn't attempt them on a bigger bike, doesn't mean someone else wouldn't.
Also, I didn't say anything against scooters themselves, I just wouldn't be happy with my kids riding around on a 50cc engine. A 125cc scooter is IMO much more safe, when ridden by a rider with a sensible head.
NB, No judgement on the M family there, just that I don't consider them powerful enough to be safe on the roads of modern Britain.

I've warned her!!!!;)
You guys could be missing something..
Depending on her age, it restricts what she can get?
You're profile says still at school, how old are you then?
If you're 17 or older, go for a 125 at least, 50's dont have much puff about them..
Still i came from a RS50 to a SV650..
But the decision is all yours, you'll enjoy whatever you get :)
I'll be 16 in March. Want to get on the road asap.

I understand, and remember the feeling of wanting to be on the road ASAP (I was naughty & driving on the roads WAY early - with parental permission I might add).
You will be limited by engine capacity, but I still stand by my above posts.
Assuming everything works out to plan, just ensure you're extra careful. Should you come off the scooter (heaven forbid...), not only will your parents be affected by it, but there's now a whole community of us that will worry about you!!

true baph, out of town they're incapable of keeping up which encourages cages to do un-highway code manouvers.
you will fall off at some point and with a heavy bike you may become stuck underneath it. with a light weight scooter it'll never be an issue plus your pins are always free.
I do plan to follow her for a while, help, not sure if my 1050cc will like going that slow, it'll kill my wrists! But at least it'll help build her confidence up.
I can't wait either!

i'm sure there'll be loads of advice that you'll receive so i wont go on, except for this..........LIFESAVERS, POTHOLES!!!!!!!!!!
I do plan to follow her for a while
See, Evie, you want the freedom of the open road. Your mum just hasn't told you that whenever you want to go out with your mates etc, she's going to be stalking you on her bike!
Face it, you might as well just go pillion. :D
Genie, you forgot... INDICATORS! :D

Excellent!!!!
I meant that we would go for ride outs together, honestly I wouldn't stalk her!
honestly I wouldn't stalk her!
I bet she does. She'll be to scared to let me go out on my own the first couple of months. Lol

That's a small price to pay. My kids would have to go to great lengths to demonstrate to me why they need/deserve their own set of wheels at 16. :)
Once you've got a bit of experience though, you'll probably appreciate what I said about the Vara's being sluggish.

I did a month or so with my bike restricted, then started changing a few things once i got more confident..
My dad followed me on his 1050i tiger, as ignorant as it seemed, i thought i could outrun him on corners... haha
You're daughter will get on fine, am glad i started on my 50, gave me alot of road confidence and the basics of riding..
:)
Hi Evie:D
It's great to see you so keen, and your Mum being so supportive.

Hello and welcome.
You can't be 15... you don't use text speak, plus you can spell and use punctuation correctly. You're a clone of your mother, aren't you?

That comes across very much like you're trying to sell yours Matt!
Evie, don't buy anything like Alpinestarhero's bike. It's fugly! Firstly, it's a curvy, but then he went & made it even worse by adding a top-box!!

I don't like text speak it gets on my nerves. Yeah, and also my mum does have a go if I spell things wrong.
