This happened to a guy a couple of days ago on his 999.
"Travelling home on my 2003 999BP I was stopped by a fellow motorist. He duly informed me that my bike was on fire!
I stopped and got off and discovered that the whole rear end of the bike was actually on fire!
I have no idea what caused the fire. The insurance assessor said it was not electrical so I can only assume fuel vapour!
Basically, the bike needs a new rear subframe, plastics, pillion seat, silencer, heat shield, carbon exhaust cover, indicators, rear brake light, wiring, rear tyre, pillion seat lock etc."

Lucky bloke that he got flagged down by another road user. What if he'd have been riding somewhere quieter. 3rd degree burns to his @rse. Or worse!
