my graphics card decided to pack up in my pc last week. it was an ATI x700.
i liked that graphics card because i had my television connected up to it through an s video cable. this was also great because i had it set to theater mode which meant everytime i opened a video file or dvd etc it would automatically set it onto the television full screen and minimise it on the pc monitor so i could carry on doing what i wanted whilst i was wacthing my movie on the tele through the pc.
i bought a new graphics card from pc world and for some reason it is not recognising the television thats connected through svideo. is there anything i should check and do you think i could returm this because im not happy with it
Stop buying stuff from PC world.
But you will need to go into your display properties to set-up the TV setting if putting in a new card, as it resets it all back to default.
What is it your running on the PC?

is this going to turn into a snobby geek "dont buy anything from PC world cos they're rubbish despite the fact they turn over billions of pounds a year and are incredibly successful but im a geek and it wouldnt be the done thing to buy from somebody so uncool" thread?

I think the opinions about PC World originally came from them pushing their after sales insurance with every product. Then they started selling tat.
Recently, it's been announced they're in financial difficulty, so where you get the idea that they turn over "billions of pounds" or that they're "incredibly successful" I don't know. In fact they announced a £30 million loss in November. Hardly successful that, is it?

I don't think it's uncool, I've used them for blank discs, cables etc but they have proven on many occasions that the PC 'specialists' know feck all and I would not buy components from them as they are expensive.

i shouldnt really buy things from there tbh because i had to proceed with court action a while ago over a laptop they sold me that was faulty
If they are cheaper then everywhere else then I buy from them, but only simple things like media, or paper. The after-sales is awful, well it was the last time I had to have a debate with a 12 year old about something that was faulty. I managed to persuade them to put it in a PC and funny enough it failed.
I remember taking a mate there to look at laptops, cus he could look at what he wanted. I asked them about hard disk rpm and they looked blankly at me, then it turned out they had nothing that ran faster then 4200rpm.
If your in Portsmouth I will always tell you to go to Novatech, which I think also has shops in Cardiff, and Bristol I think. I'm sure there are people who have had bad experiences with them too, but in the 10 years they have had my custom they have always replaced parts and been helpfull and informative. Even when I had to take a board back with a blow front side bus, they knew what I was yaping about.

they are actually failing now.
it was announced not so long back that they are having financial trouble, currys and dixons is all part of the same company.
to be honest i actually hope they do go bust because a company with as bad customer service as them shouldnt be allowed to trade.
my old laptop case actually melted onto the table cloth at home and they too tried to tell me it wasnt faulty. the store manager didnt care either.

When they go bust in 3 months you will see how wrong you are.
I have one 2 doors down from me and they are awful.
The amount of outright lies and misdirection I have heard them spout to customer is amazing.
When asked by a customer why they should go for the laptop with an Intel processor rather than the AMD one - the reply was "Its more durable" - not "The Intel is better value at the moment", or "The Intel uses less power so the battery will last longer" - which both were true at the time.
Then there was the guy that was in to collect his laptop but "it wasnt ready, we found a virus on it that we had to deal with - oh and by the way can you give me the password please" - if they couldn't get onto it, how did they deal with the virus?
Or even "We wiped everything - we just use a Windows disk we have, if you need the bundled apps you will need to go to Toshiba and get them to send you a disk", when they could have made a Toshiba recovery disk in about 30 mins and restored from that.
So theres 3 reasons
And why are they going to go out of business?
Well I was looking for a 1TB USB HD, spotted in a Google search that PC World did them for the same price as Amazon - so was going to be about the best deal I could get, so went in - to find that it was £10 more than I had seen. Got told that the price I had seen was Internet Only and they would not give it to me at that.
So I went back to the Office (only 2 doors down the street). If it had been much further I would have just ordered online and had it delivered, so they would have lost a sale.
So I went through the hoops of ordering online, only to be told to wait an hour, which I did. I also spotted that a mouse I had my eye on was £20 cheaper so bought that too....
The procedure from there is to then go into the shop with your printed reciept and the items will have been picked from the shelves,
I then got the items and was sent to the checkout where they processed it as usual.
So basically they got £30 less from me AND had to have a member of staff go get the stuff and put it aside, so more work for less money.
Really sound business practices....
ok, i get it. they're awful. i take everything back i said.
i love ipods

A few years ago, I needed a CPU fan in a hurry, so went to the nearby PC World (as a last resort only). There was an employee near the door who asked me what I was looking for. I told him that I was looking for a CPU fan. He said, "You need to go to a computer shop". I looked around at all of the computers and accessories and said, "Isn't this a computer shop then?". He replied, proudly, "No, this is a computer Superstore."
I notice that they now sell CPU fans. Does this mean that they are no longer a Computer Superstore and are now merely a computer shop?
Now and then, I do find a PC World employee with a clue. They don't seem to last long. Perhaps they get fired for gross professional competence.
