I really like Alex's version.
Just listened to the Leonard Cohen version on Youtube and it sounds very dated (funny that, eh )
I also like the Jeff Buckley version, but think Alexandra puts more emotion into it
Which version for you Monkeyboy?

On my iTunes, I have versions by Imogen Heap, Jeff Buckley, John Cale (both live and studio), Leonard Cohen and Rufus Wainwright.
I've voted for Laughing Lenny's original, but Jeff Buckley's and John Cales versions are also superb.
I don't like the way the Rufus Wainright refuses to rhyme do y' with hallelujah and sings do you. The song doesn't work as well that way.
It sounds to me as if Lenny sings 'battle King', whereas everyone else sings 'baffled King' (but then my hearing is crap). Since the song is about King David (who slew Goliath), I would have thought that 'battle King' is more appropriate.

I really like Brigyn's Welsh version, top of Welsh charts for the last 4 weeks. It is the only non-English version to have been authorised for release as a single by Leonard Cohen. The lyrics are somewhat changed and have a relevance to the modern day.

Apart from that, I just love the song so any version is good. :D

Apparently Leonard Cohen was forced into touring at the age of 74 after his manager cleared out Leonards bank account leaving him skint...no wonder i've heard this song everywhere lately
"My Lamb Buna" ... Radio 1 yesterday .. best so far

The Times disagrees with you in a 2 page analysis of the song (http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article409551.ece?token=null&offset=0&page=1):
“Well, it goes like this, the fourth, the fifth The minor fall and the major lift The baffled king composing hallelujah.”
The art is futile, because the woman doesn’t care. Instead, she humiliates and destroys the man, though, even as she does so, “from your lips she drew the hallelujah”. Man needs woman more than he needs art. The ejaculated hallelujah — a cry of praise to the Lord — is drawn forth not by David’s secret chord, but by his subjugation to Bathsheba. The remainder of the song brilliantly weaves this theme through a cinematic description of a failed affair, combined with strange but delicate images of a military parade, a “holy dove” and a western shoot-out. The fourth verse comes close to a genuinely optimistic eroticism.

But, of course, Cohen doesn’t write songs like that. What he most commonly does is pour highly concentrated acid into very sweet and lyrical containers.
As I see it, Cohen was a miserable git, I'm sure I saw a film he made. Hes errr not the most conventional of people

Rufus Wainright, in the shrek guise..
Is it just me or does the x-factor version seems absolutely flat and emotionless? I don't watch x-factor or any shows of this kind as in my humble oppinion although they manage to find people with amazing voices, they are in no shape or form artists.. They sing songs bought by the label, in a way they are instructed to by the label. None of them can write their own songs or have any passion for music..

Actually if you look into it, while its the Wainright version thats on the soundtrack, its actually the John Cale version thats in the film........
As for the flatness - well thats because they do music like Honda builds motorcycles, technically they have everything, but they are soulless, because to give them character would drive someone away - I believe its called Mass Appeal :P

John Cale for me...... pure class.
Great song IMHO. Forgotten for a long time but has become v popular again. Will probably be forgotten again for another decade or so.
