View Full Version : Don't buy a Dell Inspiron!
We bought three 6400's as company laptops less than 18 months ago.
So far we've had 5!! Power leads fail and now two of the laptops are saying the batteries have reached the end of their useable life! And they only cost £138 for a new one!
The Silver finish has worn off two of them where you fingers rest using the mousepad and all of them has lost their rubber feet.
Utter Junk. I got 7 years out of my previous Acer without a mark on it.

I've had inspiron 1300 3 years and it's still alright except for a dead battery, spacebar and touchpad are now shiny but it has had a lot of use.

Can't vouch for inspiron's but the 800+ dell latitudes we have at work don't have many issues at all compared to other laptops we've had.
The batteries dying after a year or so is normal if people don't look after them, ie full charging and discharging, if you constantly use the laptop on mains with the battery in then yes they'll die quickly. Thats why they only warranty them for a year just like every other manufacturer
Now if you want bad laptops, buy a fujitsu, we have about 100odd completely knackered ones at work
Ibm's are always good but I wouldn't knock Dell at all from my own experiences

I have a Dell latitde D630 I'm typing this on at the moment for work. Keys are a little clanky and the touch pad is awful, finish on the outside is giving up to.

Not any more :D IBM sold the entire operation top the Chinese last year. Called Lenovo now
Mine is ok and it has a hard life. I dropped it god knows how many times and its still working ok.
If you generally look after these things they will last.
Dell's build quality may not be the best, but I can assure you its not the worst and does represent good value for money.

My company buy about 12,000 laptops a year from dell and a further 20,000 desktops.
We have over the years bought from many suppliers. Dell have consistently been good value, ie. cost of ownership, reliability etc. The first company we threw out for rubbish laptops was Compaq, then IBM. TBH I would still be using Toshiba for laptops but we ended up in a single source agreement and toshiba and desktop just doesn't go.
Writting this on a dell precision M70. It needs a new battery but that is a consumable

I am typing on a Dell Inspiron 6400 right now! I agree the silver wears off, the rubber feet have come off and the screen has a one pixel blue line down the side. Apart from that......well, it's a laptop innit!
My battery has also worn out, E-bay has them for about £40. Will they be cr@p and is it worth buying a real Dell one?

Not these days surely? My IBM T61's battery still gives me 3 hours after two year's pretty tough use.

+1. Also used Dells in the past - no problems with Latitudes.
Bought about 15 cheap-as-we-could-get Inspirons 2 years ago tho, and only about 10 are still alive.
Nope, would not buy a Dell either, we used to use em at work, very unreliable (batteries, screens and keyboards the major problems). Moved over to Lenovo a year or so ago, much much better. The best ones were Toshibas.

My Dell (whatever model it is) has been fine over the 4 years I've had it. My battery is pretty much toast, but I use it at home most of the time, so I can just leave it on the mains.
