I`d be lying if in this particular case I denied that there is an element of revenge as it has affected someone close to me but in honesty I believe that society would be a better place if "life" meant what it says. If it doesn`t then isn`t that a way of implying that murder is in a way acceptable and is indistinguishable from other crimes of a less serious nature? Is it really a sign of our society that a cold-blooded murderer can get a lesser sentence than somebody who robs a mail train?
I read somewhere that since 1983 it has been possible for judges to pass a "whole life" sentence, under which there is no possibility of parole, except through an order by the Government. Would it be wrong to expect cold blooded killers to be served with a "whole life" sentence?
I find it unbelievable that a "life sentence" for someone who has deliberately taken the life of another and ruined the lives of countless family members and friends equates to a period in custody of 9 years.
