what should i look for or check? any help much appreciated

When was the bike last serviced? Sounds like you need an oil change at the least, might also be worth getting some progressive springs or Hagon springs to suit your weight whilst your at it to improve the front end.

had a service only a month or two ago...i was thinking today, bottom out is the wrong description...the opposite, after a big dip when the forks are completely unsprung there's a loud knock noise, i guess this is normal after going over a pothole etc.?

Aye, the SV front end is prone to knocking and there are a few threads on here about it too. Just one thing to double check, are the head bearings good?

There's no play in them, had a quick check today. Had my mate pull up the front end so i could check by pushing and pulling the wheel, any other way to check? At slow speeds everything feels fine, its just when i get to 50mph+ that it seems a bit bumpy. Maybe its just me worrying. Will have a complete check around the bike tomorrow i think :S

Thats the way to check the head bearing, no weight on the front and rocking the wheel/forks about.

Speak to your dealer, they may not have touched the forks, and they may well require new/more oil

I have also experienced the bump or knock after going over bumps, or dips, on the front forks.

Sounds to me like normal symptoms of the SV. As Dave said. Try an oil change in the forks. Try a heavier weight oil too. It will help lessen the knocking. But the best thing you can do is to change the standard springs.

A set of progressive springs and the right weight oil should do the job.

Not necessarily progressive. I have Hagon linear springs and prefer them.

The front is very soft at the moment. im only 10 and a half stone too. If i were to get some new Hagon springs, where would the best place to get them be? Directly through hagon?

Best place to get Hagons is directly from Hagon.
