dunno if any of you cats and kittens watch American football - and please note this isnt an oppo to bash the game - but if you do you gotta hand it to my boys the Miami dolphins. last year finished 1-15 this year made it to the play offs finishing 11-5. they won't win the superbowl but an awesome effort, great turnaround.

special note to Brett favre tho, poss played his last ever game - a thorn in many teams sides, so many records broken not least most consequetive starts

Brett Favre is going for an MRI today for his injured shoulder, probably wont be playing next year, he will go down as one of the toughest QB,s in modern times though, my bets on the Colts and Giants for the big one, my lot ,the Rams, slumped to a 2 - 14 season, next year for us again

Although undoubtably one of 'the greats' - IMO Favre made a mistake in revoking his retirement & playing the extra year.

I'm trying to find out if any other team in NFL history has done what the Dolphins have done - gone from the worst record in 1 yr (1 - 15) to the play-offs the following year - not neccessarilt the greatest record, but then they do already hold that one - the ONLY unbeaten team through the course of a season (1972)

Eagles fan, but I can't see them doing anything special in the playoff's.

i can save you that trouble Voxy, Dolphins now have the best season following a 1-15 season. previous best was 8-6 i believe....

I think you,re right about the dolphins, the Buccaneers were pretty appalling for a long time though, I can remember seeing the fans wearing pumpkins on there heads to avoid the embarassment of watching them, think I,ll be doing the same for the Rams soon :D

I remember those days too !!

They were also responsible for one of the few instances of crowd violence in American Football - the fans got so frustrated they tore up the seats & threw them at the players !!

49-ers fan here...... ever since the heady days of Joe Montana :D

Used to watch it every week on C4 when I was student. Great telly - one week in sunny Florida, the next having to sweep the snow off the pitch in Chicago.

Must get into it again next season.

+1 - what a desperately disappointing end to the season. I can't even claim that it was a close game - just too many turnovers by the O and no sustained pressure or penetration by the D.

Still, from 1-15 to 11-5 shows that at least we're heading in the right direction.

Also, Bill Parcells has confirmed that he's staying on as EVP Football Operations regardless of the potential sale of the franchise (he has an option to pull away but still keep most of his $12m (?) contract).

Congrats to Tony Sparano for finishing 2nd in the AP Coach of the Year awards - only losing out to Mike Smith (Atlanta Falcons) by a single point. Nice to see 2 'rookies' making such an impact so quickly in the NFL.

Roll on next season

i can see the lions being pretty carp next year too!

the ravens defence were just too good for the dolphins, good to see them back to more winning ways though. not that i can see the ravens going much further really.

Bears fan here, after many bad years and one losing superbowl apperance since the heyday of the 80's under MIke Dikta, Just losing out on a play off place to the Vikings and watching them humilate the division last night It aint fair

errrr, scuse me ? um, was jus wondering if any of you expert types know why can they block sometimes, and not others ? does it depend on the position they play, the play or whose playing ?

keithd
12-01-09, 05:00 PM
iirc when you're defence you can block in the first 5 yards from the line of scrimmage, but not after. offence you can block anytime.

neither can block and hold

pete m
12-01-09, 05:12 PM
ohhhh . i see ..n what about safety - is it attacking, defensive, free roaming or what the hell kinda position ?

Tiger 55

does it depend on the position they play, the play or whose playing ?
Yes, yes and no.

In terms of position, a defensive player can't block a receiver outside of 5 yards from the line of scrimmage during a pass play and he can't block with his arms outside the frame of his body - what you'd call holding on offense - during a run play.

Play wise, on offense you can run block anywhere but an offensive lineman can't pass block more than 3 yards downfield - can't even be more than 3 yards downfield actually.

As for whose playing, outside of kids football the rules are the same at all levels, so there'd be no confusion if the Glasgow Tigers (college) played the Dallas Cowboys (pro). Carnage obviously, but no confusion. ;)

thnks bro- i meant Orfrnse or DEfense , not teams playing...my fault

anyway - Safety , and any other complicated postions - and what is Special teams ?

jeez what a complicated game, the yanks love a rule book dont they ? that and stats - they love stats...

as for baseball - OMG , i jus cant get interested in that at all....:smt051

keithd

special teams are what it says on the tin. they specialise in punt returns, kick offs, and what we might call set pieces. they are generally made up of players from the offensive and defensive units

as for baseball, i never used to enjoy that. but 'pon my recent visit to the good ol' US of A they were approaching the end of season and really got into it. it helped that the yankees were playing their last ever game at their (then) home and i was in NYC...

anyway - Safety , and any other complicated postions
Nothing complicated about Safety, they're just not big enough to be Linebackers or fast enough to be Corners. (Corners are of course Receivers who can't catch).

The Strong Safety will play the run as his first responsibility and often drops out of the nickel and other pass oriented sub packages. In man coverage he'll usually take the Tight End (too slow to be a receiver, not big enough to play the line).

The Free Safety is more of a roaming type, playing the last line of defence against the pass as his first responsibility and dropping out of short yardage run plays.

Specialised positions to be sure but they all are. I mean we're talking about a sport where they employ different guys to kick the ball depending on whether it's on the ground or out of hand!

Anyway, go, umm, I don't know, shall we say Cards?

I do. I mean, anybody but Pittsburgh obviously but the Cards have that 'plucky underdog' thing going for them so that's my allegiance for this week.

i agree, i don't really know why (actually that's a lie. for some unknown reason i don't like ben rothles...(however you spell his bloomin name)), but i just don't like pittsburgh.

Well OK, but it has to be for money...

Sorry about the use of terms like 'pass orientated sub packages' before by the way, but it's not often I get asked about my specialist subject. Also, I'm a terrible smartarse :(

the big one tonight....

my hard earned has just been put on steelers by a margin of 13-18. (6-1 paddy power)

surely gonna have too much game too much experience for the cards...?

question is...will i stay up beyond my usual first quarter...!:)

Traditionally the first team to score will win the game, or it has been pretty much that way in the past, Ill probably watch the first half, trouble is once one team scores they just go really defensive, the play offs are usually the best games, its **** or bust so they all go for it, but superbowls can be a bit of a let down, btw Keith are you going to wembley in October ?

Edit; just checked the prices for tickets, have a look

not planned to go, but its my birthday in september so you thinking of treating me? bless your heart for that....i'm touched.

think the steelers will just batter bully and bruise their way to a big win. kinda hope im wrong, hope its a good game...for 95% of it then steelers run out big winners to see my bet come home!

chris8886
01-02-09, 08:18 PM
i shall be doing my best to watch the whole game. i really do hope the cards win (and not just because keith has got money on the steelers! ;))

Close game here near the end.
Will the Cards score in time?

Edit: Well they did but now they need to do it again..in 35 seconds.

BanannaMan
02-02-09, 03:22 AM
Nope....

Steelers win it 27-23.

EDIT:
Interestingly (or annoyingly) they proclaim the winners as "world champions"
....with all teams being from the US.

what a good game it was!! sooooooo annoyed the bloomin' steelers won :smt072

so much for superbowls always being just 'defence' 'ey?!

Once again I meant to watch it and once again I fell asleep before anything interesting happened (like the kick off ). shame the Cardinals didnt win though, it always about the underdog. The problem with the superbowl is that its just too American for me, I like the sport but I cant take things like the half time show or the sheer ridiculousness of the build up. And they're not world champions :smt072

Shame I missed it again though :(
