right then, third parties ins said today (on the phone) my bike is a cat c write off, and that they cant send me the engineers report yet as they have not recieved it from the engineer (how long does it take grrrr) but will once they get it.

so i know i need a new mot, i have confirmed with my own insurance that my cover is still valid and will remain so untill the full term.

however, reading up on cat c write offs i have read that you need to inform the dvla and then it goes on the V5 that it was a cat c write off.

tried to ring the dvla, useless, automated for 15 mins to be told you cant do it over the phone.

so if im understanding it right, how do i do it?

thanks for any help guys

When ur insurance pay u out they ask for the log book, the bike is then registered with dvla, nothing is on the logbook a bout it its just register'd. As for your bike then yes it just needs a new mot.

i would head down to your local dvla centre, i may be wrong but im sure with cat-C's it will have to pass an inspection at the centre before being road worthy again? im sure the website will have all the info you need though

yep as kwak says i did check, think its called a vic inspection (something like that, but motorbikes dont require them) so its just an mot.

just curious as what to do with the v5/dvla

You do nothing as far as I know, when they write it off they take the V5C, then you apply for another one and get a fresh MOT.

Nothing will be listed on the V5 about the bike being a Cat C, however it will be logged on the DVLA database as having been one. For example my 800 is a Cat C, two times in fact with this frame, but there is nothing listed on the V5 about it.

Something to remember though, you should always tell any potential buyer the bike has been a Cat C.

An MOT is all that is needed to get the bike back on the road.

Oh sorry, thought you meant you'd bought other ones. I'll look give them a ring when I'm next after a bike, I always thought they just offered it to you or auctioned it somewhere.

Insurance companies won't sell them directly to anyone other than the policy holder, they will sell them on to a salvage company who will sell them directly or via an auction (depending on the state they may just break them).

get a set of ebay for £20 not OE ones tho.
You can get new replica ZX7R ones, they will fit as they have a 30mm spacing between the threads (although you may need to cut the thread down a little).

RS are alright, but they aren't that much cheaper than buying an undamaged one.

Yes but they're greedy with it, half the ones on there after you'd bought spares you might as well have bought a secondhand one and save yourself the work!

I agree eBay is good, the insurance buy-backs are the best deals going usually.

yea the spares can be very costly.

ive trawled through all the listed ones on ebay, and each of them say for 03/k3 onwards, a lot of them are about £20 which would be sound,

think im going to keep looking as £50 for a mirror is money I dont have at the mo.

interesting, will see how much a set of these are, and look into it

thanks for your help all, and if a cheap mirror comes up, feel free to let me know!

(was gutted last week, Husky03 sent me a link to one on ebay, I had to go out about half hour before the auction ended so put in my max bid, I lost it by 50p, it went for £10.50 grrrrrrrrr, had I of realised they were about £50 I would have put in lot higher max...we lives and learns!)
