Guess what I got for Xmas :D

I remember Blue doing this a while back but couldn't find it.

Basically I have the suction mount for the windscreen in a car, does anyone use it to mount it to the speedo glass on the bike etc. I guess its not safe or anything, but has it ever fell off?

Or, is there a mount for TomTom One V3 for the proper handlebar mounts, cos all the ones I found are for TomTom Rider. Is that the same mount?

I take it the TomTom One isn't waterproof to the same extent that the Rider is?

Most definitely not. But, under the screen whilst moving keeps it a little protected :)

Wrap in in a 'sandwich/freezer' bag when its on its mount.

Will it stay in place though Grichypoos mounted to the speedo??

I've had the suction mounts fall off in a car. Probably due to condensation or change of temperature or a crap suction mount. This was a small Garmin one.

I think i'd be tempted to leave the suction mount on the bike for a good while and see how well it holds after a few hours.

YEs you can mount it onto the speedo on a curvy as Wideboy does, i have bought a Ram mount as i dont fancy my sat nav dropping off and bouncing down the road!

Use a cable tie or 'elastic' band to seal it... I've seen it done before by someone on here on a naked bike, ram mount would be better though.

But then surely it'd be a good idea to leave the whole lot on for weight.

ive found the tom tom mount to be good in my car but never tried the bike, sometimes it can be very hard to get off, maybe just make sure there is a back up such as cable ties to something in the chance it does fall

You'd have to be nuts to just trust the sucker, I drilled holes in mine and cable tied it to the top yoke (spare mount off eBay). Looks quite smart.

Just chuck it in a tankbag and use headphones. Means you keep your eyes on the road

I don't think the TomTom Rider is actually fully waterproof, think it is shower proof.

bought a Ram mount
+ 1, they are good.

I've tried sticking a sat nav on the rev counter on my curvy with the suction mount. OK it's a rubbish mount, but as soon as I was riding the sat nav wouldn't stop bouncing up and down, to the extent that whenever possible, I was riding with one hand on the sat nav (was a straight road with no junctions). Then I came to a bendy bit so I had to have both hands on the bars and the road surface wasn't completely smooth.
Let's just say I'm glad my reactions were super quick that day! Sat Nav fell off the rev counter, luckily I managed to catch it in my left hand  Not doing that ever again, although I could really do with having a sat nav on my bike (briefly looked into getting a RAM mount, but I don't think they make them for my sat nav :()

+1

That is not a good idea! My Tom Tom sucker falls off the windscreen

And your Satnav is? List of Satnavs that RAM do make mounts for here (http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/RAM/), Tom Tom specific (http://www.ram-mount-uk.com/tomtom-mounts.htm) from a UK supplier but if its made by RAM then it will be available through GPSW

It's a Road Angel Navigator 6000. Not listed by RAM

Nor by any of the others it would appear :( Might be possible to adapt a mount but looking at what looks like the cradle it not obvious.

I stick mine on the pointy's rev counter. It's never fallen off on it's own, but has come off in my hand and thats because when I stuck it on it was overlapping the edge of the rev counter slightly compromising the airtight seal. If its sealed properly it's not going anywhere. I teather it with a short strap around the top yoke anyway so if it falls off it's not going further than the bottom yoke.

I've tried a freezer bag in the rain but it flaps about and mists up you can't see the screen, in the rain I use a tankbag map pocket.

There's a lot of misinformation to this effect*, but it's actually IPX-7 compliant. I know you know what this means, but for other people's information, that's half an hour's complete submergance in water of a depth up to one meter. That is considered a suitable level of protection for most marine equipment, with only devices intended to be used underwater requiring the more stringent IPX-8 (completely waterproof) rating. I ride for prolonged periods in the rain regularly and had encountered several shoddy examples of biking equipment manufacturers' definitions of "waterproof" so looked into this in a great deal of detail when deciding which bike sat nav to buy.

*Due largely to reviews that hypothesise this, for no reason other than the reviewer's guess, "I wouldn't however expect it to survive submersion in water so consider it weather resistant rather than waterproof." from
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtom-rider.php

Oh and on an unrelated note; the sucker on the tomtom rider's car mounting kit denatures over time, so I imagine their other suckers also suffer from this. 30 seconds in some near-boiling water restores the sucker to its original shape and stickyness.
