View Full Version : Trackday? In this weather?

A chap who I work with has come to work today with a cracked pelvis, following an off at a trackday on Saturday. My question to him was 'WTF were you thinking doing a trackday when it's zero degrees?'

He's ok, but obviously a nutter :batman::-D. His GSX-R1000 K7 is apparently not too bad.

Anybody else done / fancy any trackdays in this weather?

i'll refuse the cheap track day offers myself and pay double when the sun's shining and it warm and grippy.

kinsham ran a supermoto trackday yesterday, plenty of folks turned up in the morning while the karts were skating about the track, then the track dryer went out and it was an awesome day by all accounts

it was -7 there the night before

My thoughts exactly. Although even then it's all too easy to come a cropper! :)

In February 2008 I took my CBR600 to Rockingham. Half way through the day it was snowing very lightly, not enough to settle and certainly not enough to dampen the track to any great extent. Getting your knee down while snow flakes are falling on your visor is a surreal experience, almost as surreal as getting your knee down in the rain while on full racing wet tyres.

I was at Oulton Park & Anglesey a few weeks ago we didn't get out till lunchtime at Oulton, there was still ice on track in certain places. It was minus 6 on the way to Anglesey, but was a summery plus 7 for the day :)
I dont mind doing them it just means you cant go as fast, which suits me down to the ground :)

Gives you a chance to work on your positioning (body), gearing, braking etc instead of outright speed speed speed?

Give me a bike worthwhile doing a track session on and i'd be out there. Hell I was actually riding ON snow this morning, so why not?

Or are you big girls blouses who only ride in sunshine ;-)

I did my first trackday last year at the end of January, was great fun!

I rode to work this moring, it was snowing on the way there and back, though wasn't as bad I though it could have been. Wasn't too cold as I was wearing 6 layers, which includes my gortex jackect.

I would say the key is too keep warm when its cold, then keep cool when its hot out seems have to worked well for me having work outside quite a lot.

No enjoyment for me if your cold and wet and in debatably unpredictable conditions.

So I'm with ED

It's only a crack, it's not serious until his legs fall off.

Pah, Ed just admits it

Nowt wrong with riding in the winter. You just haven't got the right gear for it ;)

Work shirt, jumper, good bike jacket, good bike trousers, balaclava, good gloves, sorted :D

I'm doing Brands on the 30th. It's just a laugh and it's all relative. Sure if it"s dry there won"t be as much grip as on a hot summers day but you just have to ride accordingly. Mind you it pays to have a few choices of what to ride. I'll take my sports bike, the SV and my Supermoto....that should cover most eventualities!! and all for £60...bargain!!

Is SM easier to ride when it's slippy? All that boot-down stuff help?

depends on the bike, but in general i find a SM is more confidence inspiring with less weight in general but especially on the front wheel, the KTM can be a handful if it's slippery, i've had the back wheel spin up while the front is in the air and the throttle response isn't conducive to mid corner fettling, sticking your boot out can save you from going over or it might, as was the case of one of the KTM boys who joined the flids in spain, break your ankle even with proper MX boots + sliders, so take your chances:mrgreen:

still wouldn't fancy my chances on a wet cold track this time of year though, no fun to be had...

Cos we're not salaried staff - no work, no pay! :)

Hell I was actually riding ON snow this morning, so why not?

But there's a difference between riding very slowly and carefully on snow and trying to cane it round the track surely? I wouldn't enjoy a trackday where I was constantly worried about ice on the next bend!

Or are you big girls blouses who only ride in sunshine ;-)

Not only sunshine, I'll ride when it's a bit cloudy :smt083

Joke, I commuted from Brum to Swindon through winter a couple of years ago, didn't particuarly enjoy it though but it was preferable to the train!

Yep, this time 2 years ago I was working as a contractor and was in work 4 days after breaking my collarbone after a high-side.

You get paid to go to work?
In my day you was lucky to get ninepence and a slap from tguvnor.
Tell that to youngsters nowadays and they wont believe you.

I was thinking about doing the Oulton track day on the 6th with a few off here as it was cheap. But cannot do that now. So hopefully i'm going to get on one at Donnington GP with No Limits in late February. :)

Anyone fancy it???

Donington is VERY slippery in the wet, it's renown for it, but buzzing in the dry. Want to do one there, but not just yet got to look after the pennies, so I'll stick to the cheapies for the time being :)

That is a point, what with the East Midlands airport near and planes constantly flying over.

I might do Mallory park instead, but would like to do a track day with someone from the org. No Limits are offering: Mallory on January 31st, February 27th and February 28th or Donnington GP on February 27th.

Would anyone be interested in any of these???

We had no real choice between Xmas and NY - went out for a ride on the 29th (last of the year) and had the off....

That was a Friday, the 1st being a Monday meant the 2nd was the 1st available day to work :)

No, but they crash a whole lot better! When I did the winter series a few years back it was nothing unusual to have four or five offs in a day, and if you were really unlucky you might actually break a lever...

On a serious note they are a whole lot lighter and generally if you have a bit of a slide you are in with a chance of doing something about it. Despite what Lone Wolf says the whole point about riding a Supermoto is the sliding around bit and losing the front going into Paddock is just part of the fun!

Despite what Lone Wolf says...

i said it wasn't fun riding on a cold wet track this time of year, i slide plenty when it's hot ,no need to do it when it's freezing
