View Full Version : AR09 - Question - fuel stop(s)

As I'm currently attempting to sort out a suitable route for this year's rideout - early I know, but I want to know it inside out, backwards, forwards & upside down by August - I have a question :-

Given that there is a petrol station only 2 miles from the campsite where I would expect everyone to fill up before we leave, how far would people be happy to ride before needing to stop (I'm NOT talking about coffee/smoke/food breaks ONLY petrol) ?

At the moment I'm looking at a single fuel stop at about 65 miles - does anyone have a problem with this ?

I'm always fine with about 100, but some on the SV 1000 might want something around the 80 mile mark.

I can do 120 miles between fill ups.

although 65 miles is a good time for a leg-stretch and to ward off the numb bum. and to do a wee. and to have a drink. and poke fun at someone.

Just base it on your own range on your new bike, we'll all be fine. But thanks for thinking of us

My fuel light comes on around 80 if I am dicking around, however would expect to get 100 on a rideout with no problem - my @rse will be ready for a stop by then anyway

65 sounds a bit too short to me. My fuel light comes on at around 85 miles when filtering in London traffic, with over 20 miles left. On more open roads, I'll get a lot more than that. A stop between 80 and 90 should be fine.

If we refuel at 65 miles, I suspect that most people will only be putting half a tank in, and they won't want to skip refuelling as they won't want to risk running out.

At AR08 I filled my tank to the brim the night before the ride. I was intending to fill up at the second stop, but decided to top up at the first stop. I think that was around 60ish miles as I can't remember where I put my map.

I put £10 of petrol in, I consider that roughly a tank. I don't think that I would have made it to the second stop while continuing to mark.

65 would be just about right for me re @rse de-numbing, leg stretch etc.

Depends which bike i'm on. Black one, runs on fumes, and you get good mileage, putting in 2/3rds of what everyone else does
Yellow one..well I can't remember how that one does for fuel on standard gearing.

Numb bum, nah, Corbin seat can sit forever on ;-) will most likely fill up night before anyhoo, but 65 sounds ok to me

Think you should be OK if you're going for something in this range... I've never had any problems getting a hundred miles out of both tank and bum, but I'd aim low because you're almost certain to get someone who won't fuel up at the one nearest the campsite (like me at NW4, arriving at the first scheduled stop with less than a litre in the tank).

65 miles sounds like a good ride. Looking forward to seeing the route

It'll be more than that. The 65 is probably only halfway;-)

i will hopefuly be filling the tank up when i get there on the friday, to save messing about before the rideout

so im good for 100+ miles

so the 65mile stop is fine with me

(if everyone fills up before the rideout, i cant see the problem with the the 1st petrol stop in 65miles)

Sorry, I meant good first leg of a ride.

Some nice roads in Essex, Herts, Suffolk. EAMG (local IMA type group) do some 5 county rideouts. Might be able to help with a route. I'd chip in with suggestions but I never know where I am on the bike let around remember what route I rode :(

well there's a possibility I could well be on a bike with one of the smallest tanks around for this, but even then I think 90 miles is it's range, so should be able to manage it.

Still not that bothered as I know the area fairly well and if needs be can find my own juice.

Cheers Mark.

I don't normally think of filling up till I've hit at least 100 miles. By 120 miles I'm thinking about where the next fuel stop is.

i have done 2 AR rides and my VTR is a thirsty girl and i have never come close to running out. The VTR has a range of a stunning 80 - 90 miles. If i can make it round anyone can

You do ride like a hooligan though mark ;)

65 miles should be ok, even for a Firestorm. The worst I ever got out of mine was 63 miles from full to empty, but that involved 63 miles of absolutely hooligan behaviour on North Bedfordshire country lanes.

65 miles is good with us. Liz's Duke is a bit thirsty, but it'll do 65 miles no trouble

At annual rideout pace, i get around 140-150 to a tank, so could do a lap of essex before filling up :)

You better drop it to about 50 miles, Vipers coming and his shed may need pushing if he does more than 55 miles between fillups ha haa haa haaaaaaa
