I've got a bad cold just now. Could that be why my gums are aching ?
Feels like I've been punched in the jaw

Could be pressure on the nerves from some sinus trouble? Take some sudafed, see if that helps

have you been punched in the jaw ?
Have you been to the doctors? You have had a bad cold for a few days now, might be worth a visit.

I know you would like to, but I don't think it would help much. Unless you hit me hard enough to knock me out

Any chance it could be your wisdom teeth coming through? Have you had a look at yer gums to see if they're sore/inflamed?
My first wisdom tooth started coming through when I was about 15. Walked into english class with a swollen face, bangin migrane and a really bad attitude. Ended up being sent home cos I was in so much pain. Now every once in a while my gums swell slightly and the other wisdom teeth pop through a tiny bit more...

+1 on the wisdom tooth idea
Or...as matt said, you could try sudafed. Or possibly rinsing your mouth out with salt water or soluble (sp?) asprin

I thought about that but there's not signs of them coming through. And it's all my gums that are sore

Wisdom teeth can take years to come through and hurt on and off periodically. If you are unsure then get yourself checked out at the dentist. If you don't think it is that then try the docs if it is getting worse.
I had the same thing before Christmas. Started as a slight headcold, then had rawness in my sinuses and within a day or so my gums and teeth were aching.
It's just a cold. Have a lemsip and get over it.
