View Full Version : Big tins of Quality Street & Roses - What to do with all the rubbish ones left at the end?

When you get a big tin of roses or quality street, all the nice ones go first, then the ok ones, then all the carp ones are left at the end.

What do you lot do with them? You know the ones I'm talking about. The rock hard toffee's which pull fillings out (be they pennys or battons), the coconut ones or any of the others which are left that don't go well with a cuppa.

One thing I've started doing is using empty wrappers (WHY DO PEOPLE PUT THEIR EMPTY WRAPPERS BACK IN THE TIN WITH THE REMAINING CHOCOLATES?) to re-wrap ones which are left, hence the coconut one is re-wrapped in a big purple one wrapper, then when someone thinks "ah ha! Big purple one! Jackpot!", they'll unwrap to find it's actually a coconut eclair thingy....

Or should I just shut up and stick them in the bin? advice plz

Roses are far nicer than Quality Street, far less of those are left over I find. I like the disguising of chocs in nicer wrappers, however you might find people end up spitting them out in your general direction :-P Also if someone was allergic to coconut and ended up getting one you might feel a little guilty...

Take the wrappers off and put them in little bags then give them to any kids you know, they're not generally fussy lol. Or melt them in a big pan and make some sort of flapjack or cake with them?

I'm sure that there are plenty of big issue sellers out today freezing their goolies off. Why not give your chocs to them and make their day?

Every time I have complained about the nastayy sweeties left in the tin I hear lots of Fathers say the same thing "Oh I like those" and came to a realisation . It is fathers who are last at the tin and have to put up with what is left , so eventually they come to like the "Orphul" sweets (Orphan crossed with Awful) . So what you have to look forward to when you are older or a Father is this , a penchant for sweets flavoured with Coffee , Orange , bits of tin foil or unidentifiable from the picture on the back of the lid .

YEAH in the middle!!! I didn't believe it so with the next one I checked that there was no foil on the outside as you know it sometimes get stuck at the middle. None. So I wolfed it down then found little bits of foil!!!

I would've sent them back but I couldn't be bothered really. I mean what are they guna send me back?? More 'Quality' Street? Maybe I should send them back and ask them to send me some Celebrations instead.

Well maybe not send them back but complain as they need to know what's contained in their sweets (although they probably already know and are just doing it to spite people :-P)

Or even better just complain to DizzyB!!!! Haha that would make more sense, d'oh.

Did they ever have coffee ones? I'm sure they did :) i love them!

Anyway that's a good idea wrapping them back up, they'll still end up in the bin though!

It's what to do with the tins that screws me over, i've got about 6 hanging around.

Would it be cruel to tape them back up and fill them with bricks or something and give them to the homeless?

Post them to YC, he's always using them for bits and bats, screws, bolts, engine parts etc. They're useful if you can find a use for them :p

You could use one of the spare tins to put all the crap chocs in left over from the other tins. Then you wrap it up and give it to someone as an Easter present.Problem solved.

So what do you know about these toffee pennies with foil in the middle Dizz?

dizzyblonde
10-01-09, 01:22 PM
hmmm Toffee pennies go in their millions, down a belt whilst warm then get flung through at warp speed through the wrapping machines. Are you sure that there is foil inside, or is he foil tucked into the penny. As what usually happens whilst they are soft the wrapper gets tucked in, usually in a line down the centre of the flat edge

Anything else????? I'm sure Im Indoors could tell you a thing or two about chocolate tempering or indeed why some orange ones are round and some oval.
Want to know how many tins we produce on a weekend in a 24 hr period?
On average 55000, we smashed that before xmas with some 64000..

xXBADGERXx
10-01-09, 01:25 PM
The machine that wraps the penny is probably gripping or stamping the foil in a bit hard for the softness of the still warm sweet .

dizzyblonde
10-01-09, 01:27 PM
Yup. Thing is the factory itself is as old as the hills and they are stingy buggers and won't buy new maachinery. So they get alsorts of probs with them. I've run the wrapping machines myself and they are a pain in the butt, Im Indoors has been running ones that do the fudge, orange and strawberry, they are built for pigmies...or is that oompa loompahs

Aye that sounds like it, it was Mr Speirs who started off the query. Either way Quality Streets are naaaasty.

LOL . I used to be a fitter in the food and dairy industry , I know all about these infernal machines , some engineers come around and say things like "I remember this thing when it was installed at so and so`s , it were an evil bugger then and that was in 1964"

i tell you what, i'd have been thrilled if we'd gotten a small £3 box of celebrations or a small tray of ferrero roche's, but nope, we got 2 massive tins - one mediocre street and the other roses.

Might go bin raiding like the christian woman off wife swap from the other week, see if it's not too late to get some nice chocs

Save em and give them out at halloween.

missyburd
10-01-09, 01:45 PM
You could probably freeze them actually, treats for the kiddywinks at halloween sounds like a plan (defrost 'em first like :-P)

xXBADGERXx
10-01-09, 01:47 PM
Sweets will keep long enough without freezing , then again , freeze them , will be funny to watch them gurning away at a frozen Penny Toffee :D

dizzyblonde
10-01-09, 01:49 PM
chocolate lasts for ages anyway. Put it this way they've been making eggs since August.
I wouldn;t feeze it though, it goes fuuny, something to do with tempering, but thats not my department

10-01-09, 01:50 PM
Yeah . you lose your temper when the wrapper freezes to the outside and you can`t get it off :D

I know chocolate keeps usually, and these are individually wrapped anyway. A frozen penny toffee, hehe shut em up for a while :-D
