Hello all,

I've had the SV for nearly 2 years now and think I would like a change. I'm very tempted by the 2008 zx6r offer that is on at George Whites this month. Free alarm, paddock stands, double bubble and tail tidy for £5495 on 0% finance.

They will part ex the SV too which would be great.

I just have a few issues. the ZX6r has 50lb ft of torque at 11k, is this a similar amount to the sv just higher up?

For most of the riding i do (weekend warrior antics and some commuting in summer) i think the zx should be liveable with. Does anyone on here own one so I can pick their brains?

Cheers

Going on the fact that most SS600 engine wise feel similar.

The ZX6R will feel completely different to the SV.....below 8krpm 'some' say it will feel slower than an SV but in reality its clearly not, its just the way the power is delivered.....then above 8krpm they are a missle.

Some also say there is no power low down so power takes ages to kick in.....again that depends at where you sit in the revs and how you ride it. Ride an SS600 like an SV twin and its not going to ride the same. There was a fine example of this on %th Gear once......EVO FQ400 Vs Nissan Micra....both start at 20mph to 80mph in top gear.....micra won by a mile......its using the gearing and engine right.

In answer to your question it will be fine, but it is different, and you will need to change your riding style to suit.

i'd suggest find a local Kwak dealer and take one out.

The IL4 engine is different from V-Twin. When you first pick up the bike and are running it in it is very dissapointing due to low revs. When you can open it up and start using revs above 8-9k it is a little rocket.

Good advice already, although bear in mind part exing you will get an awful price on your sv. Best to sell private if you've got a week or two.

I'm going to ring them tommorow and try and thrash out a deal. They are in swindon and i'm in newcastle so it'll be a long distance job. I really like the sv but toward the end of last summer I found i was battering the engine a lot (rev limiter a lot). All of my experience up until the sv has been with 2 strokes and i'm used to very narrow power bands and chasing revs. The SV has always felt very pokey through the gears but when cracking on I always want a massive top end hit. I hope to get 2.5k trade in for the bike.. I would probably let it go for that and sell all my bling separately.

I dont know what year or mileage your bike has but you may well be in for a shock.

At the price they are offering there will be hardly any play in the deal.

For Example in April last year I traded my SV650 Sport in.

It has 5k or so on the clock and was a December 2006 56 plate. I got £2650 for it and it was little over 1 year old. This was also in the good times as well when traders didnt mind taking in a partex.....traders dont want anything at the moment and that will be relfected in the price they offer you.

i got £2.2k for my 02 bike but i was jammy as hell.

Jackie_Black
11-01-09, 04:27 PM
Well the guy said they will happily take trade ins. The bike is 18 months old with 5.5k and new tyres. Gotta be worth 2.5k.

at a dealer against a new bike? If so that's a great price

repeat custom is great for getting good deal's :D

Not at my local dealer it's not!

I'd definately ride the ZX first, the 07/08 isn't highly thought of amongst the bike press (new one has better reviews) and they have been doing <£6K deals at 0% for well over a year which should tell you something. Not saying its not a great bike but they are priced about right for what they are likely to return. If you like it then its a great deal. But you could get a K8 pre-reg GSXR750 for less than £7K (not 0% but less than 5%) as an example or your options

zsv650
11-01-09, 04:34 PM
are they dodgy then.

Balky001
11-01-09, 04:40 PM
are they dodgy then.

no, they are OK, just don't discount much. I bought a new K3 SVS for less than a year from them, at the time £5500. They offered £2600 part ex against a new GSXR600, got £4K private but other traders were offering much more than the Suzuki dealership without buying a bike from them.

zsv650

bit carp that mind you cash is king wave some round and you can get some leverage.

Biker Biggles
11-01-09, 04:47 PM
Kwak 600s have been heavily discounted over Winter for donkeys years which makes them a bit of a bargain IMO.But the offer price on your current bike means nothing unless you look at the price you are paying for the new one. They would probably give you £3000+ against a ZX10 at full list price, but £2000 or less against something offered at £2500 under list price.Swings and horses, and selling privately and going in to buy with no PX will get you the best deal.

Jackie_Black
11-01-09, 05:16 PM
I may look into a private sale. Depends what the guy says tommorow. It's a good deal tho 5495 for a brand new zx6r with about £500 quids worth of extras thrown in on 0% with only £99 down!

I've sat on one a few times and they feel ok. I know they aren't getting really favourable reviews but i've never had a SS600 so don't know any better. Plus the handling is meant to be very good and I love twisties :smt040

I was looking at the same deal in the shop on Saturday. Very very tempting indeed. I have a 2001 ZX6 and once you get used to keeping the revs up its pretty quick. It will take some getting used to though after your SV. I can only imagine the 2008 model is better all round, even if it is 0.1 seconds slower than the SuzuHondamaha GSXRCBRR6.

Jackie_Black
11-01-09, 06:44 PM
Problem with my SV is that it just feels like its starting to get going properly then you have to change gear. Don't get me wrong there is good torque through the rev range but a number of times i've hit the limiter overtaking and stuff. Just makes me wonder if a screamer of an engine will suit me better.

Is that a J1or2?
I had a J1 and was a great bike. Not quite as fast as the newer stuff, but a sensible riding position made it practical to ride anywhere anytime.Regretted getting rid of it so I bought a ZX9:D

fatneck
11-01-09, 07:59 PM
J2, I love it !!! Positively 'sports tourer' by todays standards, but it does the job. How do you find it compares to the 9? Sorry to hijack the thread :-)

Biker Biggles
11-01-09, 08:15 PM
The 9 is very similar just slightly bigger and more grunty.Overkill really as the 6 is more than adequate. It will do 60 MPG on the motorway at legalish speeds though.

zsv650
11-01-09, 08:16 PM
60mpg that's **** hot for ss.

Jackie_Black
11-01-09, 08:18 PM
So the general consensus is that it's a pretty good bike. I think I need to get the SS600 thing out of my system. I have planned to do a few trackdays this year so it should fit the bill nicely, and almost all of my other riding is for pleasure with the occasional sunny commute.

Fingers crossed for a good deal.

i dont know why people get all uppetty when people by fast bike's it should be fine as long as you don't ride it like a nobhead.:-D

Jackie_Black
11-01-09, 08:29 PM
I hadn't planned to ride it like a nobhead on the road. Although I may go a little fast if I get on a trackday.
I just keep reading that these types of bike are the ultimate in handling and fun, which is what i'm after really.

I like the blue ones!!

The green has wierd graphics on it. Or are they optional?

If it's not green then it has to be black I'm afraid :p But green is better

Jackie_Black
11-01-09, 09:03 PM
Does no one except me like the blue?

I'm not allowed black as only i think it would be cool to look like street hawk on an all black bike with black leathers!!

I do like Kawasaki green, and they are faster. Just never see any blue ones. Might get a better deal on it!!

zsv650
11-01-09, 09:05 PM
yeah but if you have blue one you may aswell have a big billboard above it saying i couldnt afford a gixxer.

Biker Biggles
11-01-09, 09:06 PM
My ZX9 is blue.Doesnt seem to be any slower than the green ones and is certainly quicker than the silver ones.

Jackie_Black
11-01-09, 09:20 PM
I can't afford a gixer!! I'm mainly interested in the zx6 cos its oonly a grand more than me sv was with a ton of freebies.

fatneck
11-01-09, 09:38 PM
The green ones are fastest because of the black stripes on them. My ZX6 is blue, but I have black gaffer tape holding the fairing together. Street Hawk would have been proud.

Jackie_Black
11-01-09, 09:44 PM
I reckon i'd probably bottle it and buy green. Cos they re-sell well.

So what's the verdict? You getting one? :p

I'd agree about selling your SV private and going in with cash. I doubt they'd give you any more off the price they're doing them at but worth a shot I suppose.

I wouldn't listen to magazine articles that say they're not as good as the other bikes in class - it's all relative isn't it and I'm sure the ZX-6R's are cracking bikes.

Let us know what colour you're getting - I'd go for green :smt040

Jackie_Black
12-01-09, 02:04 PM
I've been e-mailing the guy but I can't get through on the phone.
I will try again soon.

A slight problem is they are based in swindon and i'm in Newcastle. Although they do free delivery so I suspect if i did a trade in they would come and collect the SV and leave the ZX in its place.

I know I will get a bit more private but the market will be well flat at this time of year. I'll see if i can get an exhaust thrown in if the trade in is poor as I happen to know they have full titanium race systems on e-bay going cheap. :D Are they as loud as a de baffled fuel pipe?

Exactly a mere mortal, casual rider would be hard pressed to seperate mordern 600's

If you were a seasoned racer or road sports bikes 15k+ a year then I imagine you may be able to seperate them slightly more buts its all relative.

Jackie_Black
12-01-09, 05:35 PM
Well i've ordered a blue one and it's coming on the 28th of january. I got £2500 trade in for me bike which i'm happy with considering the deal i got on the bike!!

So i'll be selling some bits soon. Keep your eyes open in the bits for sale section.

I just couldn't resist. The winter blues have been lifted and now i get a new toy to play with come spring. Also because it's brand new I can't go crazy on it in march because i'll need to run it in for a least a hundred miles or so. lol.

12-01-09, 06:36 PM
So we can look forward to a detailed review once you've run it in then...?

Jackie_Black
12-01-09, 06:44 PM
Aye, I know i've done the right thing because i feel really good about it. Don't get me wrong I love my little SV and i'd have kept it if i had space and a bit more cash, but all the riding i did last year was in the dry on weekends and evenings so i feel i owe it to myself to try an IL4.

If I hate it i'll trade it for a street triple R. Then i'll know how many cylinders i like.:smt040

Well done mate, pleased for you :D

If I wasn't getting my kitchen done next month I'd have gone for one of these to replace my crash damaged GSXR-600. As it is, I'm fixing the gixxer (which is better and significantly cheaper for me in the long run!)

I should be back on the road in a month, woot!

Enjoy the kwaka and let us know how you find it

Just booked the SV in to have its bling removed.

Looked at the price of an akrapovic slip on for the KWAK, £500.

Looks amazing though. Anyone know where I could get a cheaper one?

chris8886

can be done by ordering from the states, although the exchange rate isn't what it was and customs might find it and sting you for the vat.

Aye on flea bay its £450 delivered from the states.

Only £50 cheaper and i'd probably get stung.

£500 for a slip on is terrible. But it will need a pipe otherwise it'll sound like mice farting.

Cheapest so far is a stainless yoshi..

13-01-09, 06:54 PM
Why buy a new exhaust? I'd just fit the one you have. The right fitting will cost perhaps £30!

Good luck anyway. The next few days will p a s s s l o w l y .

Jackie_Black
13-01-09, 06:58 PM
The one I have is a side fit the new one is underseat.

Underseat = stupid money

Yoshi is the cheapest, they still make stainless steel ones. Akras are titanium !!

Who has titanium bits on their bike?

Mental.

Anyhoo, i'll have to cool it with ordering bits, i'm skint now. The guy in HG before said he was looking forward to me buying a new pipe, some blingy levers and some bungs. lol.

14-01-09, 11:07 AM
What torque difference will their be between the two?

Is there going to be absolutely nothing below 10K on the zx or will it pull reasonably well?
