View Full Version : My Wheels ain't round.
If you remember this post (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=122677) then you will remember me hitting a rather large pot hole. Well over the weekend I noticed some extra damage on my wheel. Namely that its no long round on the right hand side, which while it does not seem to affect the handling I expect it would fail a MOT. Though its not something I'm a 100% about, so I'm going to need to get it fixed. So as you can imagine I have questions -
1. Know any good places that fix wheels. I have 2 so I can get one sent off if needed. If its going to be expensive I might just buy another wheel.
2. Should I be speaking to TFL about this as the damage to my bike was caused by there roads, I have photo's of the holes, but will I need more?
3. My tyre is still round and the bike seems to ride just fine, but now worried about this should I be as it not like the rim might just collapse on me is it?

+1!!
Pursue TFL, the least they can do is cover the cost of repair

Yeah like a*hero says. It's not worth paying £70 to fix though! New wheels are only £30.

SV front wheels only 30 quid? You show me where and I'll buy every last one of them

Well pretty much after the dink I only rode it one more time... always in the dark too. So over Christmas I never looked at it just parked up out side my house and didn't occur to look at the wheel, or it was hidden behind the mudguard at the time. Just one of those things you notice in a passing glance.
Funny enough it looks much worse then it is in that photo.

Sorry I meant second hand. I got offered one at that price on the forum and I got one from a bloke locally at that price which is now on my sv, thought it was the going rate.

Nope you got a bargain. I sold my standard one for £80
Well that's it reported to Gallagher Bassett, TFL's legal people.

As stated before, rear wheels are pretty cheap, fronts are not.

Top marks that man, had 2 front wheels straightened last year for about £55 per wheel as I deleivered them. Done same day too.
2. Should I be speaking to TFL about this as the damage to my bike was caused by there roads, I have photo's of the holes, but will I need more?
Definitely try, and bill them for a new wheel. But I'd not get my hopes up.

It'll almost certainly be OK. But you should get it sorted. I would be very surprised if the rim couldn't be straightened, or was unsafe.

Well it seems to ride just fine, so worse case when I come to change tyres I'll get the wheel off the other bike put on it.
There’s nuffink wrong with that. Seeing as you have a spare you can swap, I would wait until MOT time if I were you. If it passes (which I think it would) you don’t have to waste precious cash.

In good nick, probably over a ton maybe even two, but I'll give you £37.50.

I had a bend like that in a wheel... Hammered it more or less back into shape with a rubber mallet. I don't neccesarily recommend this approach ;) But the wheel itself was still round, only the rim was bend, and it wasn't far out of the runout (2mm on these wheels if memory serves).

OOOh now that's a idea... I did which about it my self but shot it down as stupid. But now you say it what's the worse that could happen? I bend it in the other direction... I have another wheel I could use if its gets bad.

Fiery ball of death.
And potentially immortilized on YouTube
You mean if I hit the wheel with a hammer it could explode into flames... Wow.
I didn't know that aluminum was so flammable...

:-P
As said don't get yor hopes up that TFL will foot the bill as I think the policy is that pot holes have to be reported by someone else (i.e someone phones and complains so they know of the problem then the next person that phones and complains stands a chance because it is a known problem) before they'll do anything and they're normally pretty quick to fill potholes etc. in once they've been reported so this does not happen. If your the first person that has phoned to complain about this particular pot hole they will probably say their not liable because they didn't know about it being there.

I think they mean, you hammer it straight. It looks okay, so you refit it and it even passes an MOT, but then crumples during heavy braking down from 3 figures, resulting in a fiery ball of death. :)
