My Shoei pinlock still fogs up :(
XR1000 bought in the summer came with the pinlock. I know the pins are ofset & I have gradually tightened them both up until the are now at they're tightest setting. There is no obvious gap but it still fogs up unless I am at motorway speed with the chin vent open or in town I have to crack open the visor.
I know it has been extra cold - but that is when you least want to open the visor, but even today wasn'y that cold, & on it''s tightest setting it still fogged up. :(

mine was doing this and i noticed when i put my tinted one in (you can see the seal better) that parts were either very thin or not even sealed, i mentioned it to the place i got it from and he said just to take it in, he would look at it and replace/sort it out.

also in order to find out where its not sealed take the visor off and breath on small areas at a time, may help may not!!

may be worth a try?

Not to sure about the shoei but bar of soap or fairy liquid solved the fogging issue with my agv.
Not sure if its much help but a quick fix none the less.

Mine fogs up in the mouth area, the condensation is too much because of the cold I think. Bit annoying too because when it fogs up it's more of an effort to check the speedo on the SV!

Perhaps a very thin layer of silicon grease around the seal?

Never had any problems with fogging on my pinlock/Shoei Raid II. Can only assume that the insert is faulty??

I'm on my third xr1000 now, no problems at all with the pinlock fogging. Just has to be a good fit.

Stu, is it fogging up inside (the side against the visor) or the outside of the Pinlock?

i think both,
I have seen it inside the double glazing, but sometimes it's just on the outside of the pinlock (inside the helmet)

Just double check the protective film has been removed from the outside. It might also just need a clean, you never know who may have had there grubby hands on it at anytime.

If that fails and you are surte the seal is good then I would take it back to a Shoei (Feridax) dealer and request a replacement.

See my earlier thread about why I didn't like pinlock - hadn't realised it had a film on it  epic fail - but long since removed.
I guess soapy water best for clean?
yup I guess I should take it back :(

Aye, warm (not hot) soapy water.

And a brillo pad to make sure it's really clean ?

If you want to make sure it is definately sealed all around then give it a little rinse under a cold tap , if there is a leak it will get between the Visor and the Pinlock . I have only had it mist up once on me and that was a week Yesterday on the Icy bad bad day of chrashyness .

I just gotta ask, is it better than no pinlock at all? Does it steam up that bad? I guess if it does... back it goes.

Of course it's way better than no pinlock at all - the edge steams up like crazy. It's just I expect perfection.

Oh I should add, I have the Shoei whisper kit - which is like the opposite of a respro foggy mask - it keeps the steam in :)

Ah, that will have an effect! I have never seen my Pinlock fog up.

Is there a chin curtain available for the shoei? Could do with something like my cabergs have had just to keep the breeze off my chin. Full whisper kit will probably make it foggy.

Sounds like you have your mind made up. I don't have the whisper kit so I'll shut up.

Yes, it is called a whisper kit (http://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/502/29475) and is available for selected Shoei helmets. There used to be a universal product available that stretched around the base of your helmet to provide the same effect.

I got a Pinlock with my Raid II and after riding in the cold for about 20 minutes the inside of the Pinlock was running with condensation (nothing in between the Pinlock and the visor).

I took it back to Midlands Superbikes and they exchanged the Pinlock for a new one straight away, but 20 minutes into my ride home I felt like Jacques Cousteau again.

The Pinlock is made from "moisture absorbing" plastic, but I guess there's a limit to the amount of moisture it can absorb. Hopefully it'll be better when the weather gets warmer.

In the meantime, a thin film of Fairy liquid on the inside before each trip (whilst it's a pain) keeps the view clear for me.

I think what Chris means is just the chin curtain w/out the whisper kit? well don't know if that's possible but they are 2 pieces you could just fit the chin piece after paying £30 for both of them. I started with the £10 universal neoprene skirt but took it back - looked a bit cack and was slipping off, can't remember why else I took it back - was alright for a tenner I suppose. I was taking something else back as well so the £30 didn't seem so steep at the time.

Yes, my cabergs have had the little chin piece, and it's worked a treat. I'm not fussed for the whole whisper kit. It's to keep my chin warm, the lid is quiet enough anyway.

Stu,

With the whisper kit, use the neck curtain, but leave the chin curtain off.

I have a respro as well, its the only way to get it to work.

My new helmet is too small for a respro :( I had one in my old helmet and it was ace!.
W/out the chin curtain isn't that going to lose most of the effectiveness? of keeping you warm & quiet.
Whisper kit's - not enough cooling ventilation in the summer & too much fogging in the winter - pretty useless huh? :smt102

A buff is going to be times more effective than the chin curtain for that. The WK will be totally a waste of money for that.

I wear a neck thing anyway, the little flap on the chin of my caberg helped a lot though

I wear a Buff right up over my nose , this stops the Majority of vapour hitting the Visor in the first place and greatly reduces the amount that will get to my Pinlock .
