Can any of you knowledgeable people suggest a free download that will let me directly download/edit from Windows Media Player to an i pod nano without all the hassle of converting 3.6MGB of tunes. hopefully something that will change them as you are sync across.

You can put MP3s on Ipods now, even though it asks you to convert them!

Change your settings in Media Player to not rip as WMA is a good start.
You could look at Amarok2 - I use it on Linux and I understand that there is a Windows version, but how good it is under Windows etc I cannot comment on.
I've seen a lot of recommendations for mediamonkey, but not used it personally.
