What do people know about these.
anything i should watch out for as im helping a friend look for a bike, so any major issues about these bikes or a steal at £500.

mmmm but if i remember one of the vfr 400's had big issues but cannot seem to find out which one.
ino i might keep it for myself and not tell my friend.
16 inch front wheel limits your choice of tyres, exhausts rot like mad at the silencer, carbs are a swine to balance and you wll burn your knuckles trying, anti-dive units seize and are impossible to repair, caliper bolts into anti-dive unit on left fork leg also seize which means pulling the wheel out to change the pads or risk snapping a bit of cheap alloy that you won't be able to buy from Honda, the bodywork breaks easily and most have been lashed up, the seats all curl upwards at the sides which leaves an unslightly gap (but I found a way round that), alternators and reg/recs burn out for a past-time....shall I go on?
They are old Hondas and some parts are no longer available, especially bodywork. Dave Silver stocks quite a bit but not everything you may need.

bugger to fix if you have problems, exhausts are a bugger to change if you need to do that.

for £500 it needs a good look when buying it, the vfr400's can be a steal, or like a lot of things for £500 could be riddled with probelms from neglect.
parts are reasonably easy(except bodywork) to source secondhand from ebay and www.400greybike.cc (http://www.400greybike.cc) and www.abrmoto.co.uk (http://www.abrmoto.co.uk)
and new spares david silver parts is brilliant.
im a member and would defo advise you to speak to other peeps on 400greybike.cc, there is a v4 section for the vfr's
usual stuff, as most vfr400's get raced/track day'd or neglected as an ideal teenager first bike at some point, check dinged rims, hacked looms, idleing problems and flat spots at 5ooorpm. reg/retifier are common to fail on these bikes.
the exhausts are a ba5tard for rotting at the collars underneath the middle of the engine which is annoying but can be repaired if u can weld easily ( ive done it myself) the rear shocks were a bit soft new, so may need a service or replacement... rs250 and sv650 etc shocks are a preffered cheap replacement.
finally off the top of my head try and get the tool kit with it/hub adjustment spanner so you can adjust the chain. also a single sided paddock stand is a must for tyre changes etc.... not forgetting if you can check the rear wheel/hub bearing for play.- pull if over and forward on the sidestand whilst a mate checks the rar wheel for play- not a big job but they have a tendancy to wear as you'd expect for a single sided rear wheel bike.
if its a vfr your after, id be inclined to try and get a nc30 model, you may spend a smidge more but they are more common for parts.
ive got a nc30, amongst my other bikes. i got it from a mates/mate as a ex track bike, its mechanically very good and clean, though no original bodywork and missing road electrics/lights and in need of a service for £450 for an idea price.(obviously no tax/mot etc..)
they are out there if you look, and are prepared to walk away untill you find a good one.
if its a 400cc bike the cbr400 nc23 can be had at a good price, or for a first bike a twin like a gs500 or er-5 or cb500 aint a bad buy... more torque.. thump thump thump!:batman:
or tell him to save up and he can get a sv650 from £800+
ll shut up now, if you want any more info give me a PM/shout

i love them and have one!

not that bad. actually the NC30 model that i have is pretty good. full chassis swap and back together in 1 day. ive practied the exhaust removal and refit. bout 15mins each way now- its the exhaust collars that rot when the downpipes join under the eigine- got me a welder and repaired mine quite nicely even if i do say so myself!!:batman:
their little jewels of engines and they go and handle like stink!
oh good good yes!- even so mine that now has a duati 996 front end, and a wider 17 vfr750 rear end for bettr stickier rubber... oh and a straight through barely silenced exhaust system:smt040, but god help you if the engines are ever starved of oil-throw away item then!

kinda off point but jhs do a 440cc big bore kit for it... and im looking at a set of flatside carbs.... g g g g gggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg dribble dribble dribble
I have one, it's been sat in the shed since I bought the sv as I had electrical probs and not bothered with it since. Starter solenoid went on it, you can get some things from main dealers, as said carbs are meant to be tricky to balance. Friend of mine bought one for about 500 quid , spent a grand on it and it still wouldn't run properly. Mine had a habbit of popping out of second gear if you gave it some welly in first then selected second. Lovely engine though when they are running right, will get mine back on the road one day when I can afford to through some money at it, she's only done about 12,000mls. If your fairly tall the riding position is a lot better than the nc30 imo.

TO MUCH TO TAKE IN !
i shull keep it all in mind.... now my next point ( i hate gs1200 riders ) as my dad just nocked over my sv trying to get his bike out and the rad is bent and leaking YEY !
If I was in the market for another 400 it'd have to be an NC35. And that'd mean getting over the fact it's a Honda.

think i shull leave this one, and keep looking for a nice 400, as i want something to do but not a bike to thorw money at.
