In need of a rear tyre, still on my original Dunlops. The front has plenty of tread left so would rather keep the rear a Dunlop again. Can I source the original or is there a revised/better one out there?

For the love of god don't replace with the same as original by choice.

Dunlop Roadsmart won the the best winter tyre in Two mag. So there you go

There's loads of better tyres mate but why spring for a pair if you only need one and you're happy with the originals? Mickey Oates will do you one and by the time it's worn out the front will need changing too. That's the time to start wading throught the tyre threads, where opinions are like ars*holes. :)

(PS - Z6s...)

Only looking for the rear mate. Was just thinking it would be better with a Dunlop to keep the front and rear the same brand. I will be riding on a daily basis so a good all rounder is what I need. (If Dunlop do such a thing)

Get a Dunlop Roadsmart, or an Avon Storm. Then just buy a front of whichever you end up with when your current front wears out.

I too need a new rear. I have a dunlop sportmax on the front. The guy i bought it off just had it fitted (before i bought it) and there is a Metzeler on the back, so i was gona go for a dunlop on the rear. Should i go for a sportmax on the rear too......are they any good?

cheers

I suffer from tread pattern paranoia, an irrational need to keep tyres the same front and back, otherwise I imagine the rear skating over water that should have been cleared by the front.

Might even be true...

I had MEZ6's on my bike, then a puncture forced me to take a BT021 rear while retaining the MEZ6 front. Didn't really make much differance (front was usless anyway, squared off) and the handling was fine for commuting.

But, take the oppurtunity to invest in some goot rubber. MEZ6's are good, BT021's seem also quite good and Avon Storms always get a good word said about them.

If you want mental grip then go for Pirelli Diablos, even better than BT014s. As for different brands at each end, no, it won't hurt, or cause the Apocalypse or whatever, despite what tyre sellers will tell you.

Why would anyone want mental grip at the rear with a 220 on the front? :???:

As said above Dunlop Roadsmart. They're sports touring tyres which sounds like what the OP wants. They're the new kid on the block so you won't get too many anecdotal recommendations - except from tyre fitters like Essential Rubber :).

Id bite the bullet and replace with a pair of good tyres. As said you dont want a good new rear with a half worn crap front.

If you have life left in the one then just change the other to match, the D220's aren't bad but the aren't great either... I wouldn't say they are terrible and you would need to change them straight away... I wouldn't recommend them to be fitted as a second set simply because there are so many better tyres out there...

Tyres are a personal preference, what may suit you may not suit me. I love and rate both the Avon Storm's and Avon Azaro's, for me they are the best tyre to have on an SV.

I've recently fitted 220's to my bike by choice. £20 plus fitting was a big part of my decision.
So having experienced 220's from newish, Diablo Strada's & Conti Road Attacks & back to 220's, I stand by my view that 220's are not the best thing to get by choice, but you don't need to bin them if they have life in them.

I'm running a pair of ex-race Supercorsa Pros and they're fine in the ice, snow and rain, so i'd imagine anything else is a step up from them!

buying one tire rather than two obviously saves money, and the original rubber is acceptable, but if you are an 'enthusiastic' rider, i'd suggest popping for front and rear of something better. i did, and it was the single most dramatic change i've made to my SV - quite suddenly, the bike just went where i wanted it to go. the new tires completely changed my confidence level, especially in higher speed sweepers, in which i'd always previously felt like i was in danger of running wide. and the change was, if anything, even more dramatic at lower speeds - the willingness to 'weave' and 'tip in' increased immensely.

i bought Avon Storms - as other will testify, there are lots of other great choices.

Just buy whatever's round, black and matches your price point. People don't half talk a lot of rubbish about tyres.

I stuck to standard Sportmaxes on my SV and had no problems, regardless of the enthusiasm with which I rode it. I'm sure it's a different story on the track but, really, on the road you're not going to be pushing the bleeding edge. Not on an SV, anyway.
