View Full Version : Thinking of a new lid.

So I'm thinking of a new lid, probably something around the 200 quid mark as the one I'm using at the moment is on its last legs, being a good 4 years old and probably done easy 40k.

Now my last lids where -

Current which is a KBC VR1, I rather like it, nice feel and fit, sometimes a little loud but OK as long as you keep it below 50.

Caberg V2 - which for a fixed lid helmet was just overly loud, but the flip down internal sun visor was great. Due to the long journeys I do it was fantastic to deal with rain on sunny days. Got written off in my last crash.

AGV Rep. Can't remember the model as it was a while ago, great lid, a touch noisy at high speeds, above 70 though. Very good fit a feel though, last 300 quid helmet I bought.

So I would like something with a sunvisor, though I could just tap the top edge of the visor if I can't get something suitable. The main importance to me is that is nothing like as loud as the Caberg.

what about schuberth s1 ? has built in visor and apparently quietest helmet on the market

Can you get one of those for 200 quid or less?

probably the quietest I've had in the last few years is my Shoei Z1 (not sure you can get them anymore though).

Might what to have a look here (http://www.bikersbargains.co.uk/index.php), often has clearance stuff at good prices

But Dan , whatever you go for remember three things

You might still pick up an Arai Condor (plain coloured) for that amount? No sun visor, but a dark pinlock has been fine for me so far.

Buy the one which has the best rating and within your budget, but most importantly buy the one which fits best!

i like my arai condor its a superb fit but i must say its noisiest lid Ive ever had and the most expensive? like said its the fit that counts and now i just ware ear plugs to combat the wind noise. plain colours are about £180 - £200, painted bit more.
the test on the lids that was done not so long back showed the condor only got 2 stars out of 5 which is pretty pants but HG assure me its still a great lid its just unfair the way they test them.

i've heard here and there that arai lids are quite noisy. is this a general thing with arai or just the condor?

Might have to visit a few shops at the weekend and get a feel for a few lids. Knowing me, I'll go for another KBC... I do like them.

i have a condor and a chaser. the chaser is the quietest lid i have ever had, but it was at least £100 more than the condor. pays yer money and all that.

I had the same sort of criteria as you mate.

I loved my Caberg V2, but hated the noise.

I nearly bought a Scuberth S1 pro, but it was £400 and only 2 stars. (yes infinity were discounting them but they only seemed to have odd sizes left and it was last years model without the pinlock visor)

In the end i thought a 5 start helmet (another caberg V2) for £100 was better than a 2 start helmet for £400, and it leaves me £300 to spend on ear plugs. It might just me me, but i'm sure my new Caberg is alot quiter than the old one.

Edit - just notied that my new one is a V2R - thats what they brought out to replace the V2. As i say i'm sure its quiter than the older V2, and its 5 star rated, and still only £100. Or you can splash £230 on a trendy carbon fibre one if you really want to spend more money.

Cheers, its just a pain I can't test ride the lid to see the noise level.

I've got exactly the same lid, it started out really quiet and well fitting, but now I find it extremely loud! Also, when I do fit my autocom, the padding etc isn't great for positioning the earphones.

The chin air vent has a broken mounting lug (not sure how that happened) and more recently the visor springs from it's mounting point on the left hand side, presumably due to the repeated extra pressure exerted on it as that's the side that's used to lift/open it?

Also, the rubber seal around the top of the lid doesn't fit too well against the visor and I do get the odd drop of water when riding in heavy rain.

How long have you had the lid/how many miles? I've had mine since July 08 and done nearly 7k.

Can't wear it now without needing earplugs/iPod in me ears :(

the HJC AC-11 was a good lid but they stopped making it, it came 2nd in the ride helmet survey, some dealers still have some and are knocking them out for as little as £80

Most of my lids get to about 30k plus before they get replaced... not good that the HJC is breaking up at only 7k... might be just your bad luck though.

True, I've mailed them about a warranty claim, so we'll see what happens.

Have you tried the AGV S-4. Quiet up to about 60, and with ear plugs you dont notice, also the ventilation is good on it.

i think you can get one for around £180.

+1 on the KBC. Happy with mine, it is comfy, looks good and was a bargain with a rainbow visor (a la Lewis Hamilton) thrown in for free :)

Many moons ago I always has AGV, and then they started getting noisier, mainly due to the air pockets round the eyes from what I could work out. So swapped brands.
In fact I still have one...

Might have a look at them again

I was in George Whites in Slough today and they had Shoei Raid II for £100........
OK, so they were all the same blue design but if you want blue then what a bargain.

Not 100% but I think this was the designhttp://www.rflintonandsons.co.uk/acatalog/RAID%202%20R2%20BLU.jpg
