I've been to visit my new pup. He's not due to come to us until the weekend after next but we had to see how he's coming on. We've already got one GSD, she's nearly seven now. The one on my avatar passed away a year and a half ago and it's taken until now for me to consider another. He was the only other male in my house and he would at least pretend that he was listening to me, unlike the female majority here, and it ruined me for quite a while when I lost him. I don't know if any of you are dog keepers but I just wanted to show my new boy off a little.

We're calling him Buck, we like short sharp names it makes it easier to get their attention when they're training you. Yes I did mean that. I've had Shepherds for 33yrs now and I know who trains who. They just humour us.

Well he's not due to join us for another ten days but after that get on your SV and come visit. Don't be fooled by the fluffy good looks, I've had dealings with this breed for a lot of years, they're fur covered demons. They know just how to get their own way when they're small. The big eyes and winning smile doesn't cut it with me any more. Terrorise the little devil from day one I say. I wish I believed any of that, he'll wrap us all around his big hairy paw, just like the one I have now does and like her sadly deceased brother did....

That's a real dilemma, I know that I can't imagine life without a dog but whether I could give up my house to have them, I couldn't say. Fortunately I live in the type of house that is so scruffy I get complaints from passing tramps, so my dogs can't make it any worse.
Note to self: Don't let wife read this.....
Just a thought, could you not get a working dog and use him on the estate?

He's a beauty. I admit to massive bias, but there's no breed like them. Have you got one now?

No need for sorries! I love to see the evidence of fellow Shepherd freaks. And a shepherd with it's own bed is possibly indulging it too much.

Lol I'll just state now that he's rarely allowed up on the bed but I get a bit soft when I'm restricted to only seeing him in the holidays  Dogs should never sleep on beds. He knows his place in the hall/conservatory :-D

Oh and less of the freak he's not that bad looking :-P

Oh he's gorgeous! I work in a vets and we have the police dogs contract, so we see a lot of shepherds- they are SO clever! One of them is trained to move it's head with a camera attached, to make sure rooms are empty in places policemen can't go.

Gorgeous dogs, you are right about them training us though! Buck is very cute.

[quote=Magnum;1743930]What hair length is your new pup?

We're told that he's a semi-long coat. So, not the huge wooly type but probably longer coated than Reba my female gsd. The breeder tells us that he couldn't be a show dog with the longer coat, but that's not something we do anyway. We attend a local dog club where the dogs work through the kennel club " Good Citizens " awards. And then to advanced class where they do a little bit of agility and scenting work. But it's all for fun and just to keep the dogs mentally stimulated and socialised. We don't do the standard of work that your dog does, that's professional looking stuff. Ours is strictly amateur with some professional mockery of your fellow handlers thrown in to pass the time!

keep it on a short leash until we establish a relationship where I don't run away from him if he promises not to eat me

I do find myself wondering if they are too clever sometimes. It's quite daunting, the thought of starting with a brand new one again. You get used to them knowing what to do and how to do it. You're a braver soul than me if you can work at a vet's. When I've had to take one of my dogs in and not brought it back out I'm a basket case. When they're like young Buck it seems a million miles away, but we all know what lies ahead of us. The vets and their staff are always supportive but I don't know how you guys do what you do. Respect.

I really enjoy our Police dogs, I used to work with a lad in Beswick and we would go out training his dog on nights, tracking and so on. Then again, I have been bitten once or twice when they get too excited!

Some are great and know the difference between "Us" and "Them", some don't. Ho hum, pain is temporary.

Lovely pup by the way!
