On the side I run a hosting company & do web design, your best bet is either something like WordPress which is a blog system, pretty simple and easy to do, or finding a "pre-made" template any having a play about.

With the domain you will also need web hosting as many people are not always aware of this.

you run a hosting company, how much would it cost me then to have a co.uk name and have you host my website?

hiya mate, can't really comment on jamesterror's prices for .co.uk domain but I've used www.easily.co.uk for years - you can get a .co.uk domain for £9.99 and it's yours for 2 years = not a bad deal considering some of the rip off merchants out there in interwebland.

Easily also sell hosting packages (the webspace and bandwidth side of the website) - the one I usually go for is about £35 a year which gives 100mb of space to store pages, pictures, music, video etc... and you also get 5gb of bandwidth and lots of other features.

In terms of actually creating pages, you could find some templates where everything is laid out for you, and all you do is drop your own text and pictures into place.... or the other option is to use a wysiwig editor such as frontpage or dreamweaver (or freeware equivalent). Basically allows you to layout the page like a word document, formatting the font and colours by using menu's rather than spending weeks studying html/trying to code it yourself.

Hope some of this helps :)

123-Reg are good for registering your domain names (.co.uk / .com etc). .co.uk's are normally about £2.99 per year.

Real men use VI

i need to show pictures and information about my discos.

Very simple, just one <img src=picture.jph></img> and you're laughing.

i also need a co.uk name.

Tons of places do that - I use www,mythic-beasts.com for my dads .co.uk and the chaoscrypt domains? well I have never paid for them yet (its nice to work for an ISP where you know the person that sorts that out :p)

any ideas how to do this ?

Yep been doing it for years :P

cheers

Your welcome

Ok so some not so useful bits in there, but the message I was trying to get across is that its not that difficult, and if you can put together a flyer in Word, you can do a website.

The site is http://www.5wire.co.uk - Web Hosting starts at as little as 50p per month + VAT, .co.uk domains are £9.98 + VAT for 2 years.

All easily uploaded to our servers by a FTP client or using our Control Panel facilities :)

However, currently have an offer on with every domain you buy you get free web hosting, so effectively to pay £9.98+VAT (200MB Disk Space & 5,000GB Bandwidth) for a domain & web hosting for 2 years as .co.uk, .me.uk, .org.uk (etc) must be bought for at least 2 years.

Any questions feel free to ask

Domains:
I've used www.easily.co.uk (http://www.easily.co.uk) for my domain registration for years now. Great service and web/email-forwarding (20 addresses), £8.99 + VAT for two years.

Hosting:
My website is hosted by www.supanames.co.uk (http://www.supanames.co.uk) on a "Linux Mid" account. Just under £100 for two years but loads of bandwidth/webspace, 500 email addys, uk domain included, etc and very fast servers. UK-based and highly recommended by me :-)

For a free service try www.x10hosting.com (http://www.x10hosting.com) - US based and a bit slow at peak times, but you get what you pay for :-)

Website:
Try an open-source CMS system. I use XOOPS for my site (www.xoops.org (http://www.xoops.org)) as it's flexible, secure and easy to use, but there are loads of others. These will all have plug-in calendars, image galleries, etc.

If you have broadband, you may find that you already have some free webspace bundled as part of the deal from your ISP. You can register a domain name (.co.uk, .com etc.) through many companies and depending on their setup, you should be able to get this pointed at your free space easily enough. It's usually adequate for a simple website.

I would have thought that paid for hosting would only become necessary when you want to do more complex things like online bookings etc.

People pay that money for a limited hosting package?

Personally, I run a server that streams music videos to a large proportion of the US. That's done using hosting at godaddy, and the plan I'm on is unlimited in terms of both storage space & bandwidth usage (no fair usage). Typically the server pulls 1.4TB/month without batting an eyelid. For this, I pay £10.71/month, and I get paid a fair amount more for doing practically nothing.

For smaller setups, you could have a host from godaddy for £4.76/month (cheaper if you pay yearly etc), which will do 150GB storage space, and 1500GB bandwidth transfer at very decent speeds. For that price, you also get 25 SQL databases thrown in, forum/blogging software that automatically installs for you, 500 Email accounts, and domain names are £1.85/year.

I think others have pretty much covered the making pages thing, but I can further explain if required.

EDIT: Paul, you could save yourself approx £3/year, and get 10GB storage with 300GB/month bandwidth on godaddy.

Mine works out at £2.91 a month! although you do get much less for your money, it's adequate for what I need (it's got alsorts of bits and pieces inc php/sql/the other one)

My edit above is actually £2.81/month on the godaddy site. For that, you'll get 30GB storage, 300GB/month bandwidth, auto-install apps as I said, 10 SQL databases, Python/.Net/PHP/CF/Ruby On Rails/perl/CGI based Java - all setup by default & working out of the box.

They also throw in things like £13 Google AdSense credit every year.

US hosting compared to UK is incredibly cheap, I don't compete with America when it comes to hosting as its just not dooable.

Colocation of servers isn't cheap the UK either, I pay a very good rate as I've been with my provider for 3 years, however colocation in London alone is £45 - £60 a month. Correct me if you find it cheaper :)

Plus, have to remember you get slower times to US servers, depending where abouts it is in the US.

It all depends who your target audience is though, godaddy are one of the only companies you can trust for "unlimited" plans as they are well established ;)

Sorry, but that's just wrong. Well, if you are correct, the difference is marginal at best.

I can ping work, which physically, is 6 miles from where I'm sat. Granted the route may be a little strange (ie, from me via my ISP through the London gateway then up to Manchester & across), but I get an average trip of 68ms.

I can also ping my main server (in LA) or either of my backups (SF or NY), and get an average trip of 69ms.

All three pings have just been attempted now. For 1ms difference, you might as well say they're the same speed. Even when transferring large files.

We're both right and both wrong, I'll try to justify.

As fibre optic is becoming widely available, MS speeds are decreasing, I have am American friend who I game with who gets a ping of 65-95 average on UK servers and lives in NY.

Opposite is for me, I get crap pings to US, NY I get about 100 - 120, anywhere else I get 130 - 180 average.

The London Gateway to Manchester only has a 3MS average difference between my provider as their located in London & Manchester, and 69 is quite high for within the UK.

And yeh I agree, 1ms difference its worth the difference, I don't know how transferring files as my ISP has crap upload speeds anyway its hard to tell what I actually have when I download at 2.6mb/s and upload about 75KB (average).

You can find some great free html (ideally XHTML) / CSS templates on the open source marketplace (Hmmm, opensource marketplace... oxymoron?!) these days... Like:

Here (http://www.free-css.com/)

Or Here (http://www.oswd.org/)

Or Google Is Your Friend (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&rlz=1B3GGGL_enMA297GB297&ei=95frSYCFCNCZjAft0OSeCg&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=open+source+html+css+templates&spell=1)

As regards to what to go for, have you considered wordpress? - I mean wordpress on YOUR domain, not on a free wordpress subdomain.

The whole .co.uk vs. .com issue is a funny one. From an SEO standpoint, I wouldn't worry too much. You can set your geo-targeting via google's webmaster tools once you have your site up and running.

for hosting, if you can afford it, try to go for a site with fantastico deluxe - it allows you to EASILY install things like wordpress yourself, or even cubecart - so you can setup a pretty simple but effective online shop easily pretty hassle free, and accept payments via paypal.

Having fantastico well possible help you a bit in the future if you want to expand your site cheaply.

My reason for suggesting wordpress is that there are LOTS of free themes out there for it, and also LOTS of mods.

You can also make wordpress Google friendly really easily by tweaking a few settings (such as permalink structures).

If you need a hand, give me a nudge/PM and I will help you a bit for free (within reason :-D)

- Oh, for registering the .co.uk, try godaddy.com - don't host with them tho!!! - they can be cheap for domains, especially if you look here first (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=godaddy+coupons+april+2009&sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1B3GGGL_enMA297GB297).
