View Full Version : Help identifying tune on guitar

On messing about with note plucking I often "stumble across" a note that starts me off on a tune I recognize and I find the rest of the notes by ear. However there is this one tune that I've learnt the first bit of but I don't know any more so can't complete the tune! I can't for the life in me remember where I know this tune from so I'm wondering if any of you avid guitarists can help me...

Unfortunately, I only know names of strings and cords, not individual notes on the noteboard. So I've looked up a diagram and found the notes corresponding to my tune. It's not very long, but I have absolutely no clue as to what this tune is, could be a modern one, classical one or oldie, an advert even!

So using the diagram below this is my tune:

FGFGFGFG
EGEGEGEG X2
FGBGFGBG
EGCGEGCG

http://www.brendanburns.com/Lessons/pdf/guitargifnote.gif

I know this is ever so slightly random and probably doesn't make much sense but I would be much obliged if someone recognizes it to let me know! Thankyou for reading!

My guitar's just a little acoustic btw :)

EDIT: Have recorded it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jcHSCJd0K8

Is there some program you could punch the notes in to re-produce the tune and then post it here, or even record yourself and post the .wav file here?

Alternatively, create a YouTube performance for us to listen to?

To me that sounds like the song Chopsticks by Liz Phair on her Whip-Smart album. There is a sample if you search Amazon.

Yes it's definitely the first bit, but the next bit in that song doesn't match the tune in my head  Thankyou though, I've never heard of this song but perhaps it's been on an advert or something? I may have just made up the next bit lol

here's the link to the song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTQ_HfLtXyE

I'm pretty certain its from something older than that...never heard of her so it can't be her song that it sounds familiar to....

I love finger picking, I find it a lot easier than playing chords.

In fact I hate playing chords

I like both, a good old strum and a pluck is what makes the world go round :-D

It's reading music I can't be bothered with, why waste the time when I can mess about without the effort. I love making new little tunes but am a bit sad like that. I don't play with the aim to become an expert just because I love hearing the music and knowing that I'm in control

i know what you mean, its surprising how many little tunes you can come up with just sitting there strumming through cords, just words cant do them

I like it when I hear a song first time and start playing it half way through. I've made a few people laugh over the years when they've said 'here listen to this' and i pick up my acoustic in the corner and start playing it to them.

I can't read music, and I only play by ear.

Listened to it and Noaf hucking eye deer

Sounds a bit "Alpine" to me as if Julie Andrews is supposed to be Yodelling along with it :p

your goonna be wiggin out hehe

I wish that i could sum up the courage to sit with folk and learn,,,,cause if I did, I;d get smudge to teach me to play proper like. I used to sit and jam with my mate Buddha chris, and learned a lot from him, but alas I haven't seen him for many a year, since me an the ex split. Smudge and him have a similar personality that would suit me for learning

For some cool acoustic stuff, try Andy McKee: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Ddn4MGaS3N4

And Heartbeats really isn't that hard to learn to play!

well the melody line is pretty easy, its the fingery bits that are complicated. I pretty much figured out where me fingers were before i found the how to guide. I can hear it and see it in my head before I get the guitar out.....

You my friend have given me summat to do tomorrow...oh apart from cleanign the bike

dunno what Mel would have to say about that Dizz!! :p

Anyone glad I've given you something to do, shame I didn't think of it sooner then maybe I could have distracted you away from that gorgeous carrot cake and got YC to swipe me some :-D
