I had a card cloning. Didn't know anything about it. Jsut got a new bankcard through the post saying mine may have been cloned and heres a new card, and to destroy the old one.

And im very cautious with ripping up old reciepts etc too.

I had mine cloned too once, its a shcok becuase I and probably you thought we were very careful about throwing card details around. :( At least the banks are fairly good at realising it.

Mr Speirs
20-01-09, 04:18 PM
Yeah exactly warthog. I think I have narrowed it down to who it was. There is only one place I went that was out of the ordinary. Unless it was done over the tinterweb.

Its the Shell garage by me mate and in Potterspury and Roade.

I had £1.87 in South Africa, then £52.00 in Canada lol, within the space of 2 hours.

Mr Speirs

Mine I think was the BP Garage which is actually run by a company called SNAX 24 on the A45 just before you hit Wellingborough.

I was in Thailand at 4.30 pm today apparently:D

Luckily good old LloydsTSB declined the withdrawal from the ATM then rang me immediately to confirm it wasn't me using the card. The card has been stopped and a new one on its way. I NEVER use my debit card for online purchases so it's been cloned somewhere local-ish. Probably a petrol station!

I could have lost £160.00 but for Lloyds.

Mr Speirs

Mmm Lissa can't believe that has happened to you too. Something is afoot around our area.

Yeah, I went straight to online banking when I got home and checked my account. Bank account and credit card account both as they should be, no odd transactions, so it could have been worse!

My Credit card has been done along with my switch!

Actually my switch has been done twice. Never sure where tho, and HSBC put the money back in the account straight away.

My credit card they brought a camera from Curry's online, and it was actually Curry's that contacted me due to the size of the purchase and the fact the delivery address was different to my billing address. What was more scary is that they phoned me on my HOME number as it had been entered into the order along with all my details!!!!

Just a point that has always stuck in my head and a reason i opperate my Credit card like a switch card and pay it off each month and don't use switch is that HSBC (not sure about other banks) informed me that they do not have to replace the money into a bank account if a transaction that isn't you is made! However on a credit card they have to replace the funds, under the terms of contract.

That's exactly why I always use my credit card if I buy online. Fraud protection!

A couple of tips I've been given, worth bearing in mind
- if you have any suspicion about cloning, immediately change the PIN and contact the card issuer
- mastercard or visa etc will not ever contact you, only the card provider
- be a little wary if you get sent a replacement card when you're not expecting one and check with the provider if at all suspicious
- debit cards are the same as cash, no protection. Credit card gives you reasonable protection
- often scammers working overseas will try small withdrawals first to see if the card is still operable and vulnerable. If the small withdrawals/spends go through they will soon hit it hard.
- always contact the card issuer to let them know before you travel abroad so the card doesn't get blocked when you really do need it
- try to avoid using cards in petrol stations in the UK, scamming is rife (and no-one seems particularly bothered)

I'm sure others will have tips to offer.

Wise words. I havent had a card cloned (yet) and have used my cards in the way you mention just because I am always suspicious about money since there was a time I didnt have a penny to my name. I am better now that chip 'n' pin is with us because you dont have to hand the card over. I know they are still not safe but everytime I enter my pin, I check who and what is watching me and especially the cashier at the tills, I stare at them to look away!

I recently had a novel and good experience with my bank... obviously moving to Portugal I´ve had some large expenditures.
I brought my plane ticket in the morning at 10 am, and when I then tried to pay shipping costs half an hour later my card had been blocked. Ten minutes later I had a phone call from the fraud squad to make sure the transactions were legit.
It was nice to know they were doing their job!

I had similar when booking hotels in Wurzburg, Germany and Vienna just before christmas. I'd just bought a couple of flights back to Luton from Vienna, but the card was declined on booking the second hotel. A quick call to Barclaycard explained I was driving down to Austria to deliver a car there and flying home with my ex-housemate's son. They had my card back up and running within minutes.

I am apparently now the proud owner of £197.75p worth of music.

I apparently purchased this through the World Wide interWeb thingy, the above figure being what the Matabele Gumbo Bead's, when converted into Sterling are worth.

Sterling's worth bu&&er all, I'd take the Gumbo beads if I were you.

I was trying to buy a training course in the states and my card was declined, before I could get onto my card co they phoned me. Once they knew it was a genuine transaction they were ok with it.

I have no problem with responsible card providers who at least attempt to detect unusual transactions. Although having my card declined in spain when I had bought 20 quids worth of fags was embarrassing. Lesson learned there was to take my bank contact details on holiday with me in future.

I had my card used in Jewellery Quarter in Brum for £1700. Cos it's only just up the road the bank said they may want further proof that I wasn't there.
Luckily I was at college that night, so the register proved where I was, but they didn't need it anyway.

Is that going in the direction of Northampton along the A45, i.e. the one on the left just before you go onto the slip road that goes downwards and under the A45? Just so I know...since my family live there I am around there every now and then.

Good tips there. I use my card in petrol stations though (I only ever go to the same ones) but think I will start withdrawing cash and using that instead. You can never be too careful..

Some tips I have is to:
- use a cash machines INSIDE the bank
- only ever use cash or credit card abroad
- use credit card for purchases online
- only use cash when buying things in a small original shop (i.e. not a well known brand like sainsburys / topshop) - a friend of mine got a her debit card cloned and £800 taken. luckily it got refunded by the bank.
- I also use cash in shops ive never shopped in before.

At least 3 of the Shell garages round here have had scams during the last couple of years. The fact that the staff change almost daily and are all of, how shall we say, a foreign persuasion, probably has no bearing on it.

I actually had one instance when I filled the bike, somewhere round £13, and offered a £20 note. The guy said he had no change and why didn't I use a credit card. FFS!!

I re-offered the £20 and said take it or leave it. He went off and came back with change.

Cool, thanks - noted. I almost always would head down the slip road and to the Tesco, but just in case I am ever desperate I'll remember this :D
