View Full Version : Put your headlight on!

Out on my ride today I had three cars pull out on me at junctions! Luckily I was ready for them as I always cover my brakes and horn.

Thinking that this was very odd as I ride with my headlight on all the time I stopped and checked the light. I had a bad connection and it was off.

A quick fiddle and it was back on but it was more than enough proof for me that riding with your headlight on is the ONLY way to go.

This wasn't in murky conditions. It was blue sky and sunshine on straight, clear roads.

Don't let the Dozy Wassicks get you!

Us pointy owners also get hazard lights into the bargain!

We tend to need them!

Funnily enough, the only time I've used my hazard lights, was to warn other road users of, erm, hazards. :D

When I was learning my instructor used to shout and swear when bikes came the other way without their light on, scared the hell out of me the first time I heard an angry scotsman bawling in my ear for no reason I could see.

Is it not possible that as you had a bad connection the light was intermittant and therefore the cars thought you were flashing them out???

What i am hating at the monet is the ammount of dozy car drivers that are driving around on sidelights when its dark, i mean, WHY! Its nto going to use more fuel you spanners, and it makes seeing a black car/van/taxi/4x4 easier to see on dark roads, especially when one of your sidelight bulbs is broken!

+1

Ive also seen loads driving with no lights on which results in me flashing them loads to get them to switch them on.

There also seems to be laods of cars with one headlight out

What about when you don't want it on?

Daytime running lights are not a panacea, beware.

Too right. Dozy drivers pull out all the time, light or no light.

As a sidetrack, I had a near death experience one night on the Motorway last year riding a bike that only had one tail light bulb. It had blown and I nearly got squishered by an artic. I'd checked it before I left the house though. Something not to take for granted if you have a bike with no backup bulb.

I was walking home from the pub the other evening when some silly cow was sitting at the lights without her headlihgts on. I walked over and signaled to her that she needed to turn them on (it was 11pm) she ignored me so I politely mouthed through the window "headlights" and again pointed to her lights. she just looked terrrified and drove off??? She didn't even have her side lights on FFS!!!

Yet more proof that women should be banned from operating a vehicle.

Now now Dan, you know thats not what I was implying - having said that, my girlfriend did admit to doing exactly the same thing - she couldn't work out why all these drunk people were jumping out infront of her car and waving frantically at her, so she just ignored them and turned the stereo up. She is not the most observant of drivers I have to say!

What about when you don't want it on? - very rare, I'll live without the choice - because most people don't deserve the choice.

Yes it is ;) or a step in the right direction, can't wait :)

I tihnk I'll have the choice thanks.

Last thing we need is dozy car drivers with lights on all the time, I'll have to get an even more overpowered headlight then to be seen at all.

I'm in two mind as to whether they should be on all the time or not.

I have a friend who has been pulled out on BECAUSE his light were on. Due to the hardish ride of bike every bump in the road can often make it look like your headlights are flashing. The women said she thought he has flashed her out.

But they shouldn't have their headlights on all the time, just DRLs (glorified sidelights) so you don't need to escalate the light race.

My bike headlight is always on, my car headlights are off in good visibility side lights in blinding sun/dim/fog etc. and on when I need them.

Leave my lights on all the time. You can see a bike a lot further away with the headlamp on. It's normally the numpty driver that isn't taking any notice on the road that causes the incident, or the motorcyclist that's in a drivers blind spot

i cant stand car drivers who have a headlight out, so put there fog lights on instead...when its not foggy!!! im fed up of being dazzled all the time!

they obviously know they have a headlight out as they know to put foglights on.

i spent a good extra hour fixing and checking my headlight after having dodgy wiring/connector just to make sure it was fixed and i would be seen at all times!!! it meant i kept pulling over and checking the light and wiring wasnt being intermittant...but from a safety point of view it was worth it!!!

I used to ride with my lights on during the day, but have stopped doing so. The amount of times I've seen lights from the opposite direction bobbing up and down, if I was dumb enough to think so, I'd think they were flashing me.
I've decided that with or without lights dozy fecks can't see you. With or without a loud can, they can't hear you, bright yellow bike don;t mean nowt, even with a neon sign on your head and an arrow pointing at you doesn't necessarily mean you aren't going to get knocked off, 'because I didn't see you coming'

I had a taxi driver the other week come out of a side road, I was going 28 ish, wasn't wanting to stop at all, and he pulled out waving at me smiling. I had to jam on the brakes on a main road, with someone up my butt.
Even when they eyeball you and see you coming they are out to kill you......and will bloody wave at you while they do it

I think those strip light things on new Audis are great, they show the cars prescence without being hard on the eye but much more conspicuous than normal sidelights.

That is totally unacceptable. He should not be doing that over an intercom when he is supposed to be training somebody. Knob!

My instructor was funny I almost dropped the bike laughing some of the stuff he said.
He's a good instructor and cheap too. A cbt and four long days tuition £350.

I work at halfords and you'd be surprised at the amount of people that come in telling me they need a new head light bulb and yet dont even know what each of the 3 stages of their lights are. Most people seem to have no idea that the main lights you use are called dipped beam and the next step up are full beams. Then when you mention side lights they get very confused!

I always ride with my headlights on, although it may seem chavy I use a blue led for my side light, personally i think it makes the bike more noticeable whe. theres a blue light over normal head lights. I think the blue side light just helps a bit so you dont get lost in a sea of normal white/yellow lights.

I had a right go at my mate when he'd been driving for 2 months without even knowing the controls of his car. He'd never found his headlights  *****
