View Full Version : Guardsman Loses His Cool

I've often wondered how those guys can keep their cool while tourists are doing all sorts of idiotic things. I'm sure he'll be in trouble, but I bet it felt good to react for once!

About time they reacted to the ridicule they get! However I expect the grilling that follows may not be as fun!

Good :p they're human after all!
I must admit, I had a satisfied smirk watching it. Too many people in this country have no respect for service men and women as it is, without flipping tourists joining in!
I was worried because he had a bayonet on his gun and didn’t want that going somewhere painful!
should have thought about that before taking the pi$$ out of him then.
it should be against the law to annoy them

Good on him I say.
You're right zsv650, they are trained guardsmen. Someone impersonating a guard (pathetically badly mind you), should be the same as impersonating a police officer.
Kindly escort the little nyaff back home.

They are a tourist attraction too. If they were just guards they wouldn't still dress up in that costume, they'd look more like swat and secret service (or our equivalents) or just like military.
You can bet they're told about the hassle they'll get too, it's a responsibility that they have to accept if they're going to do the job. If this guy can't handle someone (a muppet obviously but that's beside the point) walking alongside him he's not fit to "guard" the royal family or represent them and England imo.

i don't agree they are part of the armed force's and should be treated as such imho :-D

They are not trained to guard the Royal family, there are other people within the grounds to do that. Besides, the SA80 isn't loaded.

That they are more than anything else in there role.

its a tradition carried on from ye olde day kept up for the tourists and a mark of respect towards the royal family, he's a soldier and should maintain his decorum but he's human and it dont show the 100 other wingnuts winding him up before, its just one of those things. he will get a right bollocking and possibly the glasshouse for that. i once spoke quitely to a muppet taking the mick out of one of the guards with a clip round the ear and got a quick rifle salute for my trouble ( cant exactly say thanks)
I must admit, I had a satisfied smirk watching it. Too many people in this country have no respect for service men and women as it is, without flipping tourists joining in!
But the p!ss take was a fookin Columbian. He should be forced to miss a penalty then sent home. Doubt he would be smilin as much then :( :D
Still funny :D

Nah, they're entirely tourist attractions. It's his job to stand there and look pretty while other people do the guarding. Or more specifically, it's his job to stand there and do the "ignore the tourists" thing and be photographed, which he totally failed to do. It's not soldiering, it's more like being one of those fake statue guys on the south bank, only he gets paid better. Don't know why we pay trained soldiers to do it, instead of actors or australian students.
Fact is, if someone took the mick out of you in the street and you hit them, you'd be done for assault. I can't see what the uniform has to do with it.

Unfortunately that would be an assault, a lot more trouble for a soldier than a civilian.

+ 1, but the are instructed to not react as it is part of the jobs discipline.

Probably the only thing a SA80 is of any use for.

Too right.
Actors would probably be just as disciplined too, if not more so, since they'd know that the mockery was not of them and their career choice, but of the character which they are playing and therefore wouldn't take it as personally as this chap obviously did :)

I dunno about that , the Police would have to question the fact that a Civvy was knocking about with an SA80 in the first place :smt104

Im on the guardsman's side here. Good on him :-D Why should he stand there and let the tourist mock him?

Because it's his job. Why should he be allowed to attack someone for mocking him, when nobody else is?

Lets ask a hypothetical question.
Replace that Guard with me in my uniform. How would the public or the .org react to a Cop doing what he did?
I somehow doubt there would be many supporters for the Boy in Blue!
I can understand his reaction, he's only human after all. No-one likes p1ss takers, but a Soldier in that role must be able to keep his head on.
Having said that, I'm glad my hat isn't as big as his!!

No, you would decide he was a candidate for a random stop and search and generally be a pain in the rse for a while. As appears to be the done thing :-P
This silly knobber was only taking the mick because he thought he could.
Biker Biggles
25-01-09, 06:20 PM
Yes.Essentially what this kn0b was doing was bullying, because he thought he could abuse the guard without any comeback. If its the guards job to be the subject to abuse without comeback to the kn0b,then his employer is complicit in the bullying. What should happen, but never does,is kn0b should have been arrested and charged with some public order offence. As that doesnt happen,I think the guard did exactly the right thing.

Knob hasn't COMMITTED a single offence. Sure, he's a knob but you can't abuse the law for that. If the guardsman here had answered back, then that'd be different, but nobody else gets to hit people because someone's taking the mick.

attitudes like that are whats making the world a shíter place imho

Back in the day, the guard wouldn't have had to do anything, as a member of the public would have clipped him round the ear, then, a police officer would have done the same, then the cop would have taken him home to his parents, who, would have done the same. There is a complete lack of respect in todays society that needs to be addressed!
Bring back ear clippings as a form of on the spot punishment rather than a menial fine!

So next time someone takes the **** out of me, I can lamp them, and that'll make the world a better place?
His response was completely disproportionate. We wouldn't be having this thread if he'd just given the guy a mouthful (though I imagine he'd still be in a bit of bother) but he attacked him, for giving him cheek. And not even a lot of cheek, from the video. I don't care who he is, nobody gets to do that.
lamp them? he attacked him? jesus, he clipped round the back of the head! talk about dramatizing!!!
i stand by my comment, i appreciate you have an opinion, i have mine and said my bit and countered your response.
personally i also think its barely worthy of reporting, but hey ho

”I felt this huge hand on my collar and managed to avoid a boot up the backside" Clip around the ear my ****... I get where you're coming from but I think he was 100% in the wrong, as was the idiot who provoked him- but the idiot is just an idiot, while the guardsman is a trained soldier being paid to do a job, which he's not doing.
phil24_7
25-01-09, 09:53 PM
I know he's in the wrong but I still say fair play to him as he's not 100% in the wrong. I know he's trained but he's also human, and therefore, is susceptible to rash decision, mistakes and hotheadedness! Society has made it acceptable for this idiot to behave like that, and I believe that is even more wrong. (By the way, I never saw him raise his foot, just shove him in the back, this would be a fair response from a member of the public)
I too can see your point though northy, however, I say "viva la revolution!!!"

Yeah, I have to admit the video cuts off at a very opportune moment- the kick and shoving with the gun and "growling like a bear" is all helpfully off camera, makes you wonder.
I suppose what I'm getting at- but you said better- is that it's not "who's right and who's wrong in this situation", they're both in the wrong. I didn't actually manage to say that though because I'm an argumentative idiot :P

Right at the end of the vid I heard a bit of growling. I suspect the Sun is going over the top as usual. Just using the word "attack" gives the wrong impression.
I don't think the guardsman was right to turn on the eejit, but I don't blame him at all really. However, at the end of the day he is getting paid to do a job which he failed to do and has broken the rules. Yes he should've known better but as Davepreston said, he no doubt had loads of other people taking the michael before which they don't show so he lost his rag. Hope he doesn't lose his job over it but I guess his boss(es) won't trust him not to do it again :smt102
