Hope your insurance wasn't on a" Kept in a Garage" basis.

Might turn up a couple of streets away?

Well... it turned up here:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Doddington+Ln,+Salford,+Salford+M5,+United+Kingd om&sll=53.135032,-2.388153&sspn=0.148504,0.44632&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=Fc8AMAMdTDDd_w&split=0&ll=53.477681,-2.281334&spn=0.009207,0.027895&z=16

Not sure which house, but apparently it's been vacant for a while and just used as a dumping ground - the SV was found with another bike that had been stolen.

It's in a bit of a mess but most likely repairable assuming it starts...

http://www.lazymanc.com/images/recovered_sv/after4.jpg

I'm trying to work out what i'll need but I don't really want to start buying stuff until I know the engine is ok...

I'll start a new thread in the SV tuning and tweaking section to cover what i'll need to get it back on the road.

It cost me a £150 "recovery fee" to get it released from the vehicle rescue centre, plus £57 delivery back home :(

The insurance company has already said they're not going to cover the theft as I neglected (forgot) to inform them of a change of address and therefore my policy is invalid :(

Basically, I've been shafted by the thieves, then by the insurance company, and now by the vehicle recovery centre... but at least i've got my SV back and hopefully she'll run again.

**** mate.

Given the fact that insurance have refused to pay out, you are lucky to get it back.

It looked so good before when I saw it. Could help but have a giggle at the "anti-theft warning" sticker in the first picture. :D

Good luck getting it sorted.

Bad luck. I hope they find it and catch the b**tards.

Haven't seen any silver curvies about (aside from mine), so if I see one parked up I'll see if I can get the frame number and PM you, just in case it's migrated to this side of the Pennines.

Edit: Oops sorry..... hadn't read your post above. Glad they've found it.

I dont know if I should be gutted or pleased for you:confused:

I'm glad you got it back but its a real shame that its been so abused :(
I'd run it about locally for a week or 2 to see if it sounds and feels right before spending too much on it.
I hope it is ok and just cosmetic damage.
Bloody insurance companys need stringing up.

surely that stretch of regent road is heavily cctv'd. surely theres something somewhere. can the police not help with that? or is it not cost effective?

Yep, feeling quite fortunate and upbeat despite the grief and cost so far. I've been looking for a replacement for around the £1500 mark which is all i've got to spare at the minute so to get it back in what looks like a repairable state is a big bonus, even if it costs me a few hundred quid to get on the road again.

The irony of the sticker is not lost on me! Maybe I should send the photos to alphadot for use in their promotional materials :)

Yeah, I just want to get it started first, and then i'll run it for a while with just the non-working bits fixed before I worry about the cosmetics.

New repair thread here: http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=128966

I think i'm actually more pi$$ed off with the insurance company than the scumbags who stole it - at least you can rely on thieves to thieve stuff, I didn't expect in my naivity (spelling?) to get shafted over forgetting to tell my insurers that I'd moved :(

I tried my best!

Problem is, I am bound by our policy and if I feck it up, I'll get shafted good and proper.

I looked all over for that bike, I didn't realised it was a forum member, not that I could have tried any harder though!

Glad you got it back,

Sorry I didn't get hold of scrotes for you to pay retribution to.

No probs Pete, just hope the police managed to get some prints off it, i'd wager the robbing ba*&!rds have probably been caught before for something similar. Not exactly sure if that's enough to convict though if they haven't been caught with it?

I'm not sure you have much chance catching a nutter on an SV when you are in a car sadly :(. Glad you finally got it back but it looks in a sorry state. Do the srapes down the side mean that the thieves came off it at some point? Maybe they hurt themselves...

Argh... glad you got the bike back...Having my bike nicked is my worst nightmare...

Insurance companies are the biggest thieves of them all. But i bet you don't make that mistake again though. I'd have been tempted to say you were "visiting" that address.

I did think about it but I'm not 100% sure I could've gotten the paperwork from my old address, and I didn't fancy being charged with fraud if they ever found out. I just wrongly assumed that as I'd paid them £680 for fully comp cover and been honest about my mistake they'd do the decent thing and honour my policy. Now I realise how daft that was, they can just get away with openly treating customers like s**t because you can't just vote with your feet and not take any insurance out. I certainly won't be using CHAUCER INSURANCE again but I doubt any other firm would have treated me differently.

Pete, the recovery service said I could probably claim the recovery fee back if the Police agreed and it wasn't used in a crime, but the PC I spoke to said that due to them having to call the recovery service out I'm basically stuck with the £150 charge... he's going to get back to me tomorrow but I think I've been shafted on this one? :(

Also, as it's been reported stolen, do I now need to tell the DVLA that I've had it recovered or will the Police do that? I haven't got around to canceling the road tax yet either, so is that still valid?

Bluepete
02-04-09, 08:02 PM
The insurance should sort out the recovery costs, VRS at Walkden I assume? If it has been used in crime, the Cops cover the cost of recovery. The Officer finding it should ensure the PNC is updated with the fact the bike is recovered. Did the VEL stay with the bike? You don't need to contact the DVLA at all, unless the VEL is missing, in which case you should be able to get a replacement, but as usual, it'll probably cost you a few quid.

Unfortunately the insurers are being b$(%$^"! and have said they're not liable due to me not updating my address when I moved. This was before the bike was recovered but I doubt they'll change their minds now that it is, although I guess it doesn't hurt to ask.

What's a VEL? A V5? If so I've still got that here.

I meant more that they can go through small spaces, over pavements and alleys etc. And even the wrong way down roads where if you were to chase there would most likely be a lot higher chance of accidents and fatalities with innocent bystanders. Just think, if you had chased them down the wrong way and they hit a pedestrian, they could have been killed. I suppose its almost good that this way the bike is recovered and noone is dead or injured.

Or just put the bike on the smallest 3rd party cover.

Basically anything they can get away with from the small print.

My advice would be to have as few clauses (garaged, security locks, etc) on the policy as possible if it doesn't massively affect the price, then it can be stolen from pretty much anywhere and they haven't got any loopholes to get out of paying with.
