As the so-called computer 'expert' in the family, I'm getting loads of grief over this...

Mum & Dad's printer (a Samsung CLP-300) is playing up - anything in black prints out with what are best described as faded streaks down the length of the page, as if the toner hasn't come out properly on those bits of the page. Anything in colour is fine though, it only does it with black stuff.

I was wondering if using one of these (http://www.mrpcclean.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=37&products_id=79&osCsid=f207cf4bd0922fb19563ecb5d7971021) would make any difference? Anyone got any ideas please? :smt100

take the toner cartridge out and give it a gentle shake from side to side. This will even-out the distribution of the toner.

I have a CLP-500

When I got that I took the toner out, shook it and it fixed it for a bit

Ultimately needs a new toner cart...

I looked at getting a CLP-300 as it worked out cheaper than a 2 carts for my CLP-500, but doing the maths, it would cost me more in the long run (£25 per toner for the CLP-300 but only 1000 sheets vs £80 per toner but getting 5000 sheets.

Got the CLP-500 3 years ago - £300, and only now needed to replace the half-filled toners it came with.....

Not always the toner. If you are getting streaks it could be some dust on the charge Corotron, or the image drum. Not knowing the printer i am unsure what can be done. With most of these things its a throw away the cartridge and buy a new one..sadly.

99% of laser printers i have worked on the whole image seciton is built into the cartridge

The Samsung CLP's are non-servicable - ie find the offending bit and chuck away.

Ahh the good old Corotron - Xerox 4045's used to go through them almost as fast as toner.......

Take the drum (that holds the cartridge in) out and there should be a roller visible - are there any inky streaks?

It's a comon problem with the clp-300. I think it's the developing unit? or something like that. A guy came to the office and replaced the part under warranty.

Yep, brand new cartridge installed!

Yep, seperate black, red, yellow & blue cartridges.

The seperate toner cartridges all slot into what appears to be one massive cartridge (which can be removed & slotted back in easily) containing at least one of the rollers (I can see one large roller with a shiny surface on it).

Take the drum (that holds the cartridge in) out and there should be a roller visible - are there any inky streaks?

No streaks visible, although I can see toner residue dotted around the moving parts i.e. cogs & gears etc - there may be black toner there too but the plastic it's made from is black so it's difficult to tell!

I was wondering if it's possible for something to get blocked i.e wherever the black toner comes from, as it prints fine in colour & the streaks only occur when printing black? Is there any way I can take it apart & clean stuff or am I entering a world of pain if I try it? (I'm not a complete technical numpty, I can build & repair PCs etc but I'm scared of laser printers!)

Not under warranty anymore sadly... :(

Yep, seperate black, red, yellow & blue cartridges.

it'll probably print better if you put yellow, cyan and magenta cartidges in it;)

Our Xerox machines go through developer units like they are going out of fashion our old darkers were much more reliable.

Its probably the unit that you stick all the cartridges in then. Probably something called an imaging kit or similar. The will probably contain all the drum, corotrons and transfer stuff. There really isnt much more to a laser printer.

Make sure they haven't enabled something along the lines of an ink saving setting

Well depending on whether you want to buy new consumables or a new printher, you could look at the likes of Insight who are currently doin an almost disposable Xerox 6110N (Yep built in NIC) for about £89 inc vat and a spare black toner, though when the toners do all run out its about £150 for a new set...LOL.
