Is it just me, or is there quite a lot of it these days? I mean, unavoidably lots of it?

Now, I've never done the 'megathread thing', so maybe I just don't get it, but isn't random drivel what Facebook (which I also don't 'do') is for?

That is all.

No, I haven't. I'm not intending to have an inane conversation with anyone about nothing important. I'm attempting to elicit serious responses to prompt a discussion.

Dan, I think you're right. There is more chat on the site these days. But that chat is mainly contained to Idle Bander, so IMO, it's fair game.

But why here? Why not on one of the myriad sites specifically designed to be populated with a load of old cobblers?

fizzwheel
30-01-09, 11:00 PM
There probably is, but then the sites got much bigger and well its grown from what it originally the site started out as.

As long as it stays in idle banter then I dont see what the problem is.

Random chat it supposed to stay in the megathread, but it doesnt always and if we moved it all into the megathread we'd spend all out time moderating and not actually enjoying the bits of the site that we like using.

It would really help if we could self moderate and make sure our posts were appropriate for the section that they've posted in.

Yep facebook is ideal for that but not everybodies on it and I cant get on facebook at work, where I can get on the forum at work so it helps keep me sane.... but I've made alot of friends on here and I think its because we know each other quite well now from meets at AR's that its become quite chatty.

We did have a bit of a purge a while ago - and most people got the message and kept it to a minimum or went to the Megathread...

... but yes, it has crept up a bit in recent weeks.

Perhaps folks could take this as a bit of a gentle reminder so we [the mods] don't have to resort to purging threads again. ;)

Well, yeah.... I suppose it is, but new PMs are easy to miss (well, they are for me) when all you get is a small, unobtrusive link in the top right-hand corner..... IIRC, we used to get a dialogue box pop up when we logged in on the old Forums. Is there an option that allows us to have this?

Also, the "Oi" type threads allow other folks to bring it to the attention of the intended recipient when they might not otherwise be looking at the forums.

I don't use facebook or anyother social networking sites. I have enough sites to keep up with as it is. Why should we need to go elsewhere to talk to people that for the most part we met on here in the first place? That's just plain daft.

It's called Idle Banter for a reason. Don't like it? Don't come here :-D

Just my view.

I couldn't couldn't resist 'poking your embers' because I couldn't understand why you(or anyone) would be bugged by threads titled 'FAO of X/Y&Z' if you had enough stress flowing through your veins. Ergo that bug wouldn't exist in your 'room of bugs' if you did ;)

Following on, I remember posting a thread titled 'FAO of TLW' . If memory serves me right, it was a video of a Supermoto in action. A nice vid which could have been posted without the 'FAO of...' but TLW came to mind when I saw it, as he loves his supermotos(and had posted a few vids himself)....so because I could, I decided to tile the thread as such.

I can think of a number of other reasons(some already been stated by) why other other folks might give a thread a certain title...one being, it would/should possibly bring about some pointless drivel/drizzle from certain quarters. Should it bug me? Nope, I just smile and think "Ah!!! More shoite....c'est le T'internet" :-D ;)

...like the thread I started yesterday, or was it the day before, 'Oi!!! Thingus!!!' designed to wish well for impending bike test. True, I could have sent a PM - but then nobody else would have known about it, and the whole point was to publish it.

What's the problem with that? Exactly what IB was designed for, no?

I can think of a number of other reasons(some already been stated by) why other other folks might give a thread a certain title...

I recently posted a "FAO" thread too. In my case it was "FAO Anna."

The main bulk of the OP in that thread was to give Filipe a review of some software he'd mentioned to me, and given that Anna is his better half, I knew the thread title would attract his attention.

He also solved a problem of mine, without knowing he had done so, so I figured a public message of thanks was a good thing.

Sorry if I caused offence or added to anyone's stress. :smt083

+1, you choose to look in the section, what do you expect? It's mainly the IB section which makes the org what it is, where people can share opinions on topics other than bikes and generally have a laugh and poke fun at each other. It is healthy and if random chat didn't happen the world/org wouldn't be the same.

Or are those complaining secretly having a dig at those who don't ride and mainly come on for the people? I, for example, am one of those (not that I'm taking it personally :p) but that doesn't mean I don't scroll through most of the constructive threads and find them interesting, I just wouldn't have much to contribute that someone more knowledgeable wouldn't have said anyway :smt102

In case anyone hadn't noticed. I'm a fan of MOST of the pointless inane drivel in IB, I generally though it was all banter and therefore IB was the perfect place for it (it only sems to happen in here!). I have noticed that on occasion, threads go WAY off topic, but it's to be expected with the amount of characters we have on the org, and as long as it doesn't happen in every thread then it's fine by me.

I too don't get the mega-thread, it's WAY to random and your have to live in there to understand what's going on!

I like the chatty threads, they do usually have a specific point or topic unlike megathread which I'm sure is usually used by the same people. The derails may be another topic, where people run a thread for 20 pages but I'd prefer that than just a Q&A thread

I've got no issue with chat, as long as it's posted in the correct place. However, I don't think any of the forums should be used for one to one chat, that can be done via personal messaging.

To be honest, I find the posts in 'Idle Banter' just as interesting as post in any other section, and they are a lot more amusing.

I used to be on a car forum, and people took issue with this sort of thread. Due to lots of slagging off by sad people who only wanted to read about cars, these types of post got less and so did the interest in the forum. Lots of people left the forum and now it's sh*te!

You don't have to read these threads if you don't want to.

There is another aspect of this that I've just thought of.

I remember a while back (almost two years now probably), a number of folk drew the conclusion that post count equated to knowledge. I suppose their conclusion was that if you post a lot, then you must be answering a lot of questions & helping people out.

IMO, that's the wrong conclusion to make. The post count is just that, a count of how many posts you've made. It's no indication as to how helpful someone has been (or not been). Other forums have a ratings system so users can rate each other (in terms of helpfulness etc, not attractiveness!! Although.... :D ).

I'd have to ban myself then...

Thing is when I first joined, I didnt know anything about mechanics the SV etc etc, i spent alot of time in idle banter and made the odd post in the other sections, chatting in there made me more confident about making posts elsewhere and I did alot of reading and then that made me more confident about tinkering with my SV, which meant I asked more questions.

I then was confident enough to organise a rideout or to and then onto help with running the site and organising the AR.

What I'm badly trying to say is that If I'd been banned from posting in certain sections, TBH I'd probably have just f*cked off somewhere else and then I wouldnt have had the opportunity to contribute and give something useful back. I also wouldnt have met my current other half ( she'd probably tell you this is a good thing sometimes ) also I wouldnt have made any of the friends that I have either.

All opinions noted, and most I agree with, like 'if you don't like IB, stay out'. I posted this thread in Idle Banter in order to make sure that the chat-like nature it would doubtless attain would be contained in the right place.

However, one point I would make -

Refer back to my original post and you will notice I never actually mentioned Idle Banter, merely 'chat' - I too don't have a problem with IB as an entity, but I don't spend a huge amount of time posting in IB, preferring generally to stick to the more serious areas of the forum.

What I was referring to was the seemingly exponential increase in the number of non-IB threads descending into one-to-one chat.

Discuss :-D

That shouldnt be happening, but as Mods we cant be everywhere all the time, hence why some "self moderation" is required on the part of everybody ( including me )

i use to enjoy coming on to the SV site; for ... lite entertainment and fun... somewhere, somehow along the line, just as everything else in the world, it just became a bit to PC! - mind what u say... it may offend and cause an onslaught (be rediculed for your opinion)

has everyone lost the plot and become so uptight they dont understand the meaning of fun/laughter and idle banter? for (whoever's sake) lighten up... as per everything.... u have a choice... read it... or dont read it...

i, like many others have said, couldnt possibly contribute to those in the know with regards many things.... yet i enjoy reading them and the posts have taught me alot... but its the IB that USED to keep me coming back... its the inane posting of dribble that made some nights for me a laugh but then i read posts like the one i responding too that make me realise why I havent been frequenting this space as much as I use too...

Maybe it's not for you.....but maybe what you like is not for others.
If we were all the same...how boring would that be.
If it bothers you that much, perhaps it's time to look elsewhere.

...like the thread I started yesterday, or was it the day before, 'Oi!!! Thingus!!!' designed to wish well for impending bike test. True, I could have sent a PM - but then nobody else would have known about it, and the whole point was to publish it.

What's the problem with that? Exactly what IB was designed for, no?

If we only spoke when we could improve the silence, the world would be a very quiet place:rolleyes:

Was glad to hear the lad passed his test and even better, is riding well.
Thanks Ed!!!

Ahem <cough> .... perhaps we ought to read the last post by Dan again :-D ;)

Ben

Discuss :-D

Ahem ...(cough,cough).....Perhaps we should remember our own words..... ;)

To be frank, I reckon anyone who spends majority of their time in idle banter should be banned(atleast limitations imposed) from seeing certain parts of the Forum....until they can show that, they can contribute more that just inane drizzle.

Banning those who don't think or look or maybe act like we do????
How cool is that????

Fair and well made point. I certainly haven't forgotten....

...but it's not about 'cool' though. It's about making sure the 'drizzlers' contribute wholesomely  to the 'orgness empire :p ;)

Didn't Hitler say the same thing about his Airian empire??? :p ;)

If you start banning people there won't be an orgness empire.

Since when has chat disrupting other parts of the site become a problem???
I'm not seeing it.

this thread makes me laugh

its been said, if IB annoys you then don't come in, i cant see how it could though

im always on IB and yes i post crap most of the time, but crap posted by others is amusing, i come home in the evenings ect switch PC on and theres normally always a thread that makes you smile..... and thats a bad thing ??

if there no was IB section would there be any rideouts as that would be a huge part of the social side of the org gone

I think you missed the point Dan was getting at. He's not moaning about IB itself, its just that alot of threads get derailed or just get filled up with chat, thus rendering the point of the thread in the first place pointless.

It might be funny to some people when threads end up like that, but to some people me included it is actually quite annoying, especially if the thread was serious or semi serious one.
