Hi Everyone,
I thought I should join and post up a couple of pics as I have just picked up my first road bike, a 2001 SV650 (Curvy one I think you call it). Spent a few hours riding it round this afternoon and loving it so far. Riding in the snow was a bit of an adventure, but it can only get better from here right?!
I used to have trials bikes when I was younger, but only got round to doing my test last august. Have had to wait til now though to actually get a bike!
I'm based in Dorking, and looks like there is a very active group in Guildford, so hopefully get to meet up with some of you at some point.
Cheers for now.
Mike

Thanks for the comments and the welcome folks.
Good spot on the chain, I'll have to get that looked after. With the trials bikes we used to clean the chains then cook 'em in graphite grease, do people do that with road bikes too? Or just normal oil? And with regards to the trials riding, mud and knobbly tyres are easier to handle than road tyres and salt/ice/snow/diesel! So I'll be taking it easy!
No idea what screen it is I'm afraid, I was told it's not a standard one but don't know any more than that! I can get tucked in behind it alright though, but then it feels like the wind is trying to rip you off when you sit up for roundabouts etc!!!

Bit OTT for a road bike, you aren't likely to get the same crap in the chain as you would trialling or crossing.
Clean with paraffin and re-lube, I use old engine oil, is the common method with road bikes.

Genie, aii a bit in common, but no wedding bells and kids for me just yet. Getting married appears to cost muchos £££ and that means less money for cars / bikes! Still, I'm sure I'll be joining the happy club of married folk soon enough!
Thanks for the advice on the chain too, any idea how I can tell if it's an 'O' ring sealed chain? Apparently it makes a difference...?!
Also, can anyone tell me if the bike has a standard rear end? I'm thinking it needs a tail tidy to sort it out a bit.
Thanks again for the welcomes guys and girls, nice place this, I'll be sticking around!
Lovely bike.
The chain will be an o-ring, or perhaps an x-ring, which have rubber parts so you have to be careful to avoid certain solvents. You can buy various chain cleaners, but paraffin is generally accepted an excellent cheaper alternative.
There are cleaning guides around the internet, but it's basically a case of getting a rag soaked in your chosen cleaner (and perhaps a spray bottle) and wiping the chain down and then cleaning off the gunk with a clean rag :)

very nice clean bike for 2001. Good choice of colour too there.

It does need a bit of a clean after being out today. So a total newbie question, what's the best way to wash a roadbike? Bucket and sponge? Any parts of these that need regular attention to keep them nice?
I'll be getting some paraffin and grease to sort the chain out with.
Also, comments on the colour, it was the only option for me! Looked at a blue / red cbr but just didn't do it for me!

wash list.
sponge,
old sponge,
shampoo,
muck off or similar,
toothbrush,
bigger brush,
furniture pollish,
various cloths,
basically the list is endless. as is the cleaning. oh and before kwak gets it in, autosol.
st220_mike

Same as the kit for cleaning the car plus the muck off then.
Should be alright, I'll get out there tomorrow night and get rid of the salt!

they say Timotei (or whatever is in your bathroom) is good for washing your bike.....apparently:smt104

I use some car shampoo in hot water. first, wash it down with cold water from the hose, wash with the hot water and soap, then rinse, then dry. then lub the bits that move

I use Autoglym bike spray, the super resin polish..for that showroom shine....tiz good stuff that.

I tell a lie, I give them a quick rub up with WD40 30minutes before sale :p
I doubt YC would go to such drastic lengths.

Hello and welcome.
It looks like your screen is a double bubble screen nice bronze tint to it stops glare in the summer.
The picture of your bike looks like you may have a standard can on it but you have writing on the can... if that´s the case it´s likely to be after market but I can’t make it out from the picture.
Don’t worry about cleaning it too much in the winter you only need to make sure the salt is washed off so as not to erode stuff... just enjoy riding it ;)

Yes, it's an ART can, and it sounds awesome! I was really thinking about the number plate holder thing being standard? It looks a bit bulky to me and wondered if there is a smaller tail tidy for it?

Yeah that is the standard snow shovel... Unfortunately there is no simple bolt on/bolt off tail tidy for the curvy. You have to cut the snow shovel. Have a search for Undertrays or Wideboy's thread about how he made his own (give me a sec and I'll get you that link)
[EDIT]: Here's (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=103879) Wideboy's thread. Hope that helps

No worries. That's the great thing about this site.. Get told something useful and then pass it on to others in a similar position
There's also this (http://www.geocities.com/fenderbegone/) site which gives a step by step method with pics of each stage

dont listen to them! a yellow bike is a happy bike and one that makes you more visible
besides, it adds to the cheeky nature that an SV possesses
"hello, i'm an SV, i'll take you all on, you GSXR's and CBR's!!! come on then, lets go play IN TOWN!!!"

Yep, personal preference indeed, and no bike would stand out if we all road the same colour / style etc!
I like the look of the Blue Pointys too, but they were a little too expensive for me at the moment.

Good man, blue pointy's reign supreme. This also means that yellow curvy's are the poor mans blue pointy! ;-)
